THE SF4 BEGINNERS Thread! NEW? POST HERE FIRST!

Best thing to do… try to throw at the same time and it will tech. If you are Abel, command throw, and you will throw them instead. Using the back dash works also.

  1. just gotta practice. it’s impossible to not be able to block those attacks. you either need to keep practicing your timing, or get a stick, cuz i hear the the pads are wack. also, a sweep is very slow. you might very well be able to mash out an SRK after you block the jumping kick.

and just note, it’s a pet peeve of mine when people call HK/LK “high kick” and “low kick” hahaha. in street fighter, those are “hard” and “light” kicks.

  1. you’re gonna need a stick. but in the mean time, the best thing you can do is to wait to push the punch buttons AFTER you are completely sure you’ve pressed the last forward. there’s some leeway when you can press the punch/kick commands after the motion for the specials. exaggerate that last forward motion. think of it as up+forward if you have to.

search function is down. happens sometimes

what kind of throws? there are two kinds: 1) regular throw, which everyone has, and 2) command throw, which only some characters have.

you can jump up, or do a reversal move like SRK for either. you can also tech a regular throw by also throwing, but you can’t tech a command throw. you’re going to have to do a reversal or jump.

against head stomp, either jump up or back early in anticipation and attack, or FADC backward, or just dash backward.

Hi, new player. My XBL gamertag is the same as my nick, mentalatr0phy. I’m relatively new to fighters in general, as I didn’t spend any time in arcades as a kid. I’ve played a little Mortal Kombat 2 on Genesis and bought Street Fighter Anniversary for PS2 (though barely played it), but didn’t really get into the genre since it started moving to online play. So my fighter experience is more or less Soul Calibur 4 and now Street Fighter 4.

Started out with Crimson Viper but her low health made my amateur mistakes too fatal against Ken’s shoryukens, so I’ve recently switched to Zangief and am enjoying more success as I learn to play. Currently my battle points have gotten up to 1700+ but it seems like quick match puts me up against new or low-skilled players even when I set the priorities to “same skill” or better.

I have one burning question: 90% of the time I can’t see latency meters–any idea what the cause could be? Playing on Xbox 360.

You’re choosing quick match. Don’t do that.

Either do a search for a custom match, create a match, or head into arcade mode with it set to accept challengers.

The problem I have with custom match searches is how long it takes. I end up greeted by an already full game the first couple of tries. I haven’t tried the arcade mode thing, so that might be interesting.

Wishface:

You’re probably not completing the QCF motion when you do the super motion. I also tend to not include the final forward in the motion so that it doesn’t come out. And there is a shortcut for the shoryuken motion that is df df +p. Since you’re doing the QCF motion wrong, you hit the df df twice and get the dragon punch instead.

With the 360 analog stick it’s more difficult to do the QCF motion since you have no feedback from the stick.

I dont know what else I can say. I’ve spent time practising these moves and examining the inputs and I know that the stick finishes in the forward position when I’m pressing the relevant button. DF is a totally separate area of input, but there seems to be some crossover between them so that if you’re a milimetre south of Forward it registers it differently.

I’d love to get a more suitable controller but in the UK you can either pay ridiculous prices for stuff on ebay or you can make do with the default controller. I don’t use the dpad, i use the thumbstick. Sadly you just can’t buy arcade sticks and stuff over here, at all.

The game is slow to block low i have noticed. This combo seems cheap to me. It doesn’t help that this is all that people ever do online as Ken is the only character being played (what fun).

I’ve also used the thumbstick on the 360 controller, I found it much more accurate if I grip the stick between 2 or 3 fingers from above, rather than wiggling it around with my thumb.

And don’t throw the “cheap” word around here too much. It ticks people off

Learn to counter the “cheap” moves and punish the noobs for using the all the time.

Well that’s the trick isn’t it!

As for using the controller that way; whatever works I suppose, but that sounds painfully awkward given the pad’s size.

You can shop sticks online, only it will take a while to get them from sites like AIAB (arcade-in-a-box) since they are overloaded with orders due to the release of SF4. 6-9 weeks is minimum according to their website.

x-arcade.com also has arcade sticks (single and double) where you get to choose parts you want and the button layout.

Depends how much money you are prepared to pay I suppose.

I believe that Capcom should have properly tested the game ont he deafult 360 controller as that is what 99.9%of players will use. If they expect people to use something else, in the way you do with games like rock band, then at least sell something suitable for a reasonable price. I personally don’t have lots of spare cash to outlay on overpriced internet merchants exploiting a huge demand for a rare product.

Well, first of all, fighting games were usually made for d-pads or arcade cabinets, not wobbly analog thumbsticks. It’s not Capcom’s fault that the default 360 d-pad sucks alot. The PS3 d-pad is 10 times better regarding accuracy and feedback. And there’s always a hardcore bunch of people who bought Hori EX2 arcade sticks years ago, or other anniversary edition gear.
They just made the game work on a 360. They couldn’t tailor-make the game for each console it will be released on.

Many diehards from the old days still play Tekken and SF games purely with the d-pad, and not even an arcade stick. Madcatz has issued some awesome fightpads with just a big d-pad and 6 buttons on the front to cater for those people.

SF4 IS actually alot more beginner-friendly on the inputs than the old SF games. Try playing SF2HD Remix (xbox live), it is much less forgiving with timings and margins for error. You’ll find it alot easier to throw fireballs and throw dragon punches in SF4 with the analog thumbstick than doing the same in SF2 HDR. Plus they’ve added the df df+p shortcut for the old dragon punch f, d, df+p which is hard to pull off on a thumbstick.

I’m afriad the game doesn’t block quick enough and this is a cheap combo. If this is all the game has been reduced to then that’s poor. 28 characters and all you get is the same cheap crap time and time again. What fun.

The reach of these characters is also huge as well; these normal moves are longer than a lot of other characters. It’s also too quick to hit them with an anti air normal either because it will just get counter hit.

Sorry, but for me something in this game isn’t right if it won’t block these moves.

this game isn’t the least bit beginner friendly. not in a million years is this game beginner friendly. My god!

the lack of available reasonably priced peripherals is frankly a joke. Capcom know full well that people were going to struggle and while they aren’t responsible for the crappy 360 controller they could have made some effort to get a decent controller out along with the game. that there is nothing available in the uk is a joke.

Well, that’s what Capcom keeps saying. That this is the most beginner friendly SF game ever made. Just keep practicing

I’m new to SFIV and Street Fighter in general. Have the ps3 version of the game.

Anyway, I wanted to ask a question.

If I wanted to do a Jump forward medium punch > Light punch > Light punch > Kadoken > Super kadoken(forgot it’s name -_- ). Can I mash the punch button the whole time while just worrying about the D-pad inputs? Or will that develop bad habits. I used to Play Melee competitively and didn’t learn how SHFFL the “right way”, so I had to relearn everything, it was such a pain. Don’t want to have the same thing happen.

“Dying Fetus”? What the hell is wrong with you?

I think it’s a band name.

Dammit I’m already old and out of touch? I haven’t even hit 30 yet.
