Ah, I see, I must have just skimmed over the definition, have a bad habit of doing that. Thanks for clearing that up for me, man
nice. i make music too.
you’ll find that a lot of people on here are really good at things other than fighting games
This probably be really stupid, but I have to ask. How do you play against grapplers? New to the game, but I don’t know what to do against throws. I was knocked down one time and upon wake-up I tried jabbing but got thrown anyways. Would appreciate some advice even though I think this might be a stupid question.
Depending on character, I would say try jumping out instead of attack ahead. Guile’s Flash kick works perfectly though it gives a big risk. Well, so does ever other move after a wake up.
It’s not stupid at all. Here are some basics, and they apply to most SF games.
Command throws are throws that require a special motion to do, like half circle forward+P, or 360+P (like Zangief). If command throws are done at the same time as regular throws (forward+jab+short in SFIV), the command throw will ALWAYS win.
Similarly, super throws beat out command throws if they are done at the same time (there might be some exceptions to this in SFIV, but I am speaking generally).
If the grappler is in your face while you are waking up, and just does a command throw with proper timing, it is impossible to jab them out of it. Because their command throw is a 0 or 1 frame move, but the startup framecount for jabs would be something like 3-5 frames, so before your jab comes out you are getting thrown.
So you need to either try jumping out of it, or doing a reversal special like a dragon punch with perfect timing.
Hope that helps.
I’m very new to SFIV (and fighting games in general), I’m wondering if Rose is a decent starting character (or character in general). Through the trial mode I could consistently pull off her combos - more so than any other character. Online i’ve gotten 700BP or so simply through completing the trial modes and playing a conservative defensive game, I mostly use my ultra as punishment for aerials and can beat the shotos pretty handily.
Anyway it would really suck to find out my main has horrible matchups or sucks in general, I don’t really want to be putting myself at a disadvantage this early into my career. I’d rather switch now than like 3 months from now and start from square one again.
I think you should switch, Rose is pretty weak IMO, and when you are a beginner you should focus on stronger characters who do at least decent against a wide variety of characters, not kooky low-tiers like Rose.
For example, if you are just getting into competitive fighting games and you keep losing, you will have a hard time telling if you lost because you were the weaker player, or because you lost mainly at the character select screen.
People respect players who use low tier, but they remember the ones who win regardless, keep that in mind.
Yeah, this is exactly what I was afraid of. I think the reason i’ve been winning so much is because 90% of the people I fight use Ken, and Rose seems to be really strong against him (at my level anyway, i’ve only had the game for three days!).
I really, really don’t want to be another Ken - Ryu player because if I pick something different at least theres some element of diversity going on in all my games. Who should I start out with then?
Pick whoever you like from the stronger characters in the game, Gief, Balrog, Bison, shotos, Sagat, etc.
So the accepted way to beat out meaty lv3 focus attacks is to backdash on wakeup, yeah? Which is why meaty fa’s are retarded. Is there merit in charging a fa on knockdown, anticipating the backdash, canceling the fa with a dash forward and throwing?
You can still use a reversal move with armor breaking to beat a lvl 3 meaty focus attack, right? At worst you will trade and get blown away from each other, which is a MUCH nicer way for the game to give you breathing room for getting knocked down than in most SF games, please believe.
If I remember correctly, special moves done as reversal will gain armor break. I at least remember seeing a Ryu reversal fierce dragon punch and it armor breaking a focus. shrug, someone go test it real quick, I don’t own the game.
So I read on gootecks blog about doing option select tech throws (down back + lp + lk). I am in dire need of this as my honda just keeps getting thrown non stop.
I can’t seem to get it to work consistently like doing a standard throw command whilst standing. Is the timing different for the select tech throw compared to a normal tech? When you input a option select tech which doesn’t tech should a lk or a lp come out?
Honda has a command throw, so YOU should be the one throwing other people around like crazy off of cheap ass shit like a blocked butt stomp, cr. jab, j. short etc.
Ya you’d think so, but I suck Doing an oicho (which has longer startup timer than a normal throw) after their mixup block string shenanigens is not easy! Oicho just isn’t what it used to be.
Oicho has a longer INPUT (i.e, joystick motion) than regualr throws but if you do it as a reversal in a block string, or do it on the same frame you will beat normal throws 100% of the time, so just work on your execution and you’ll be thrown less and less.
If you can’t time it, keep doing the motion while blocking and during gaps in the block string you piano all your punch buttons.
Another NoOb!
Hi people,
Im new to the forum, and fairly new to fighting games, so as instructed i thought i’d post here first. Im 24 and my 1st encounter with fighting games was over 10 years ago when i had a copy of SF2 on the Mega Drive. Back then i thought i was the daddy coz i could slaughter all my mates with dragon punches, fire balls, and huricane kicks. that was the last time i ownd i fighting game until i recently brought a copy of SFIV on 360, OH MY GOD how things have changed! I can still pull off all my old moves, but nowadays theres so much more to master! Link combo’s, chain combo’s, canceling, FADC, even super and ultra combo’s are new to me! I LOVE IT! so much more than i thought i would, its so deep! ive got so much to learn! This website has already been a great help to me, and i only found it yesterday! so im sure there will be many more posts from me asking questions and offering my opinions in the near future.
thanks
Oicho has 5 frames of startup so I don’t really think it’s a great idea to try using it as a reversal.
Hi Argyles. I’m new as well, but Rose also really grew on me. What I decided to do was main as Sagat for the time being. He’s a good character to learn the basics with. He’s top tier with a lot of easy combos and can work well both on defense and offense. He has good turtle skills, but he can still rush down with the best of them. When I get more comfortable and able to hold my own against some mid to high level players, I’ll be switching to a lower tier character, more than likely Rose.
Hi Guys,
1st Off What a site I think i’ve “arrived” LOL I love fighting games but of late i’d been put off by most as (in my opinion) the newer fighting games seemed to all be about the visuals and less about fluid smooth fighting gameplay… That was until i got my copy of SFIV (xbox360) and havn’t put it down since.
I’ve come on this site looking for some like minded peeps who might offer me some of there time in terms of one on one “spar”/ training… I’m looking to learn and get better. My main character is Fei Long My win ratio is currently 55% I’m looking for some one (maybe another Fei Long player) to learn new skills from.
Thanks very very much.
Obi.
