THE SF4 BEGINNERS Thread! NEW? POST HERE FIRST!

Airthrow: Thanks for the reply. Didn’t know you could do either of those against command throws. For some reason I thought light attacks would beat them, hah. Still so much to learn. Thanks again.

this is huge. i literally sunk like 3 months into el fuerte @ the arcade losing tons of matches when i should have been picking like ryu or sagat to win a little while learning how to play. learn some good characters to get a feel for the game AND get a feel for the top dudes because you’ll need to know how they tick when you are fighting against them (especially with lower tiers).

You sound a lot like me. It’s nice to see someone else who is excited to learn and to get into something so deep. My mind has been so understimulated the last few years. I play guitar, but I already play it at a high level and I haven’t been in a band so I haven’t had the drive there, and I am so sick of school… and now to have something that is deep and challenging that I enjoy and that I can really sink my mind into is a really cool thing.

I would say we should play against each other, but I have PS3. I am realizing that I am missing out on a lot, and possibly better online play, without the Xbox, so I might break down and get a used XBox along with SF4, and I will let you know if I do

I have a question which (I think) belongs here.

I am having serious trouble approaching, specifically with charge characters. If I jump in, I get countered (shoryu, flash kick, EX spinning bird, etc.). If I walk up, hado, sonic boom, kiko, etc. I’ve tried FA absorb with dash, I’ve tried jumping the fireball and then walking, and I almost always end up eating some move.

So my question is - what are some good tactics for approaching? And along similar lines, what are good ways to approach people who are abusing the same move (i.e. a Guile who just constantly crouches, flash kicks on jump, and c.RH on walk)?

EDIT: The reason I ask this here is I’m asking about general approaching strategy, rather than solutions to specific match ups.

I could be wrong but I think Rose is on her way to being a very solid character. She has solid combos and a nice easy combo into her super. Her normals seems really solid as well. Slide is very safe and goes under a lot of stuff and c.MP is still good. Maybe her Ultra is a bit more difficult to combo into but it has nuts range and keeps people from jumping.

I can’t seem to figure out whether or not Claw can walldive to the opposite wall. I see people do it, but it’s certainly not just ending the charge with up-forward. I’ve tried it in training mode, with input turned on. Not working.

Do you have to be 70 % to the desired side of the screen before it may work?

Hey everyone im new to the game and only get to play online, as none of my friends play locally, my questions are firstly, what character to i take to beat shoto characters as thats all that seems to get played online and i get destroyed playing my sakura by ken’s. secondly how do i learn a new character? normally i learn some moves in training go play some me vs bot then go online but then as always i get destroyed my kens so i just wondered how i overcome this to make the game more fun ive played around 30 games online and only won 3-4 of them so having a bad time at the moment. thanks for any help

This game takes more than 1 day to learn, when you play against gamers who’ve played SF for 10 years already. I suggest you look at the strategy guides posted in each character’s section on this forum, there’s some awesome info there.

Is a good guide to refer to

This one is also great, very in-depth and videos for most of the characters:

I didn’t know this, I thought it was 1 frame like in ST… maaan that sucks for Honda, hahaha.

How do you learn how to incorporate air throws into your strategy? What are the best/easiest situations to use it, and when shouldn’t you try to use it? How does the timing work? Seems like 95% of the time, when my opponent and I are both in the air, I get hit before I can hit/throw them.

thanks ill take a look its just ken and ryu spammers dont seem to be 10+ ear experianced players

I’m sure the experienced players are out there, it’s just you don’t meet them in the low tiers. Or they don’t bother playing random online matches and stick to playing eachother in friendly games. There’s lots of gamertags in the threads here, I’m sure they won’t bite your head off if you challenge them

I’m a new guy, and would love to play with some people from the boards. I have 420BP currently, so I’m obviously a casual player. If you send a FR please just mention that you’re from SRK.

edit - I’m in California, USA

Is it true there’s no such thing as priority?

Someone said there’s only hitboxes and invulnerability during startup.

A tip, add your location to your profile so people can see where you are. No point sending FR to someone that resides in the US when you’re in Poland (thinking of lag issues).

This is probably something you shouldn’t worry about unless you become a dedicated tourney player but I can tell what that person was thinking when they typed that, but you really shouldn’t read into that statement too much:

Technically, there is not really such a thing as “priority” as in, the computer program does not have a numerical “priority value” for each move where it will always stuff moves with a lower numerical priority value.

Who wins on attacks is truly determined only by hitboxes and invulnerability, this is true.

But in the fighting game hobby when people say “(move) has HELLA PRIORITY”, what they are really saying is that, this move due to hitbox and vulnerability box properties, often beats out other moves cleanly…

So priority is just an expression in human terms of what the computer actually uses to determine who wins on trades, which is only hitboxes and invulnerability frames…(Mainly, basically, with exceptions, etc)

This is part of my problem. I’m so used to my lovely oicho tick and reversals in sf2 but now it just doesn’t work :frowning:

All I’m getting stuck with is non stop crossup block string throw mixups. So does anyone have any more info on the properties of option select techs?

Hi all,

Not every good with opening posts sooo… . I’m relatively new to fighters overall. I’ve played Soul Caliber II before, and the only other SF I played was Turbo II for the SNES. I’ve been playing SFIV for a week or so now and have been enjoying it a lot. I know I’m pretty newb at the game myself, but playing ranked matches online is just aggravatingly boring with the same repeated crap over and over again - J.HK followed by C.HK repeated ad nauseum.

So, I figure I don’t get any better by playing against people who play like that and came here to learn more about the game and how to improve. I main Sakura. If anyone is open for a game, feel free to add me over XBL.

depends on the crossup. when i play a shorter quicker character i like to walk under them, but ducking can equal some pain. if you know its going to whiff you can either throw, backdash, or mash out an uppercut. try and land more on top of them. also, it seems like many characters lack a good crossup and if thats the case then use it very rarely =\

read char specific forums as well as the matchmaking forums in your area (for you its atlantic south) to try and get better. online play is good but nothing compared fighting IRL

Hi everyone. First time poster, and thankful for all the info this community provides.

I’ve recently started playing SF4, and I seem to be having a hard time finding a character that fits my playstyle. Granted i’m new to the game, but my standard for all prior fighting games is to scout out a single character who I enjoy and master him/her, as opposed to jumping around a lot. I’ve gone through the individual character forums pretty thoroughly, but am kinda fuzzy.

I’m looking for a toon who is rather agressive (lots of rushdowns, crossups, wake up game type stuff) and hopefully somewhat technical & combo friendly. I’m not necessarily looking for a top tier toon, but “higher” tier would be good :stuck_out_tongue:

Only one restriction. No Sagat xD
