American Ninja

Hello

GG’s to CRAYFISH The other day im new to Supercade and am a new HF player as i main in ST, Hope to play some of you guys soon!

Hasn’t contacted me yet.

Ok he’s out. Dude and Paskis are playing today also. Thanks for your patience Poda, I’ve tried to cut the name players as much slack as possible… Remember when you play Old Mastah to go best of 5, and record your match pls. thanks
*brackets updated in first post.

Sir Paskis won 3-2.

ggs man, next time I’ll get you.

Now make us proud!

Where’s that replay?

Don’t give us any crap about it didn’t get recorded…

Don’t worry, it’s up on Supercade.

I know some people who play this game so would anyone mind if I asked a few questions:

  1. How balanced is this game?

  2. How does it rate compared to the rest of the SF2 iterations?

  3. How does it rate compared to other SF tittles?

  4. Whats the faults of this game?

  5. Where can I find some high level footage?

  1. Best balanced SF game ever made

  2. Best version of SF2

  3. Best version of SF

  4. The one single fault of this game is Stun/Dizzy, and how easy it is to achieve.

  5. Crayfish’s youtube I think

Thanks alot guys, I’ll take a look and will update brackets. Hopefully Paskis and I can team up to get the match captured also.

  1. Good balance overall. There are some lopsided matchups, as with every game, but I can be atleast competitive with characters like Dictator who are susposedly bottom tier. The bad matchups are the ones that generaly re-occur in other games due to stylistic factors, like Honda vs Shotos.

  2. Its considered the ‘purest’ and most balanced oldschool SF2 game (WW,CE,HF,SSF2). Its hard to compare with ST since there are so many differences. Alot of people just like ST and HF as seperate games, which I think is the best way to approach it. By all the old school high level players like Mike Watson, who played both versions, they generaly site HF as thier favourite*

  3. Oldschool Street Fighter is essentialy a game of tactics, combos are in thier infancy here. SF2 is all about zoning, footsies, spacial control, character matchups. There are no easy offensive options, or ways to reset your position if you make a mistake (this starts to change in ST with Supers and throw techs etc), everything has to be worked for and if u make a mistake you are heavily punished.

  4. There are a few moves that can be a bit spammy, like Ryu’s Hurricane kick (that has invulnerable recovery), and Blanka’s vertical ball lockdowns in certain matchups, but nothing that compares to say Boxer’s super in ST. The main issue for me is the millions of xeroxed shoto scrubs, especialy Ryu’s online. I really get sick of fucking shotos. This is a problem with the players tho, not the game…
I don’t totaly agree with LeRaldo on the dizzy system. The dizzy’s system only seems strange if you are coming from the CPS2 versions of SF2, but this game doesn’t have supers and is based around maximising the few offensive openings that you have to really work for. Its a points based system that once you learn, you will know exactly when u need to go on the defensive.
Apoc gives a great breakdown of how the system works in the HF txt guide linked to in the first post:
MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service
There is a low percentage randomness modifier inbuilt tho that occasionaly renders sequences of moves to have more or less stun factor

  5. Yeah, check my uploads, favourites and playlists, especialy the Chinese tournament matches and the couple of Mike Watson Matches:
    YouTube - Crayfis’s Channel
Here are a couple of matches that I think show the game at its best:

Funnily enough, when I just visited my channel, I found 3 new HF vids in this playlist:

My problem with stun/dizzy is not the “randomness”, it’s what I said in my earlier post, which is how easy it is to achieve. Stun happens extremely fast in HF, and when you couple that with the high damage, it usually prematurely ends a match just off of one mistake.

I like that you get severely punished for mistakes in HF, but I don’t like dizzy at all. I’d rather see it completely removed from the game, and I feel it’s the game’s only flaw.

Old Bastah won our match 3-1. Here is the replay: http://supercade.net/Supercade/client/SupercadeClient.application?r=31527

I know you hate shotos, CrayFish, but I’m forced to use one until I can learn another monster character better (poor Vega :().

Anyways, Old Mastah is the Mastah of shotos, no doubt. That second match was key. On the final round, I got the lifebars confused and jumped away at the end, only to look stupid that I was the one losing hahaha.

Why is it that Supercade is the best way to play this? Is the speed wrong on MAME?

The speed is way off last I checked. But, recently, there seems to be differences in speed even among arcade versions. But, I can tell you that Supercade is much closer to the real speed than MAME is, unless they fixed it by now. Plus the autosaved replays are cool.

Thanks a lot guys, and thanks Crayfish for all that awesome info. I played this game once during a tournament without any prior experience and got 5th, ever since then I always really loved it but didnt know anyone who played it or had any real good info on it. I’m thinking of picking up gief for this game though, never used grapplers (I main Fei) but I would like to try him out. Any strats or tips on him?

Edit:

Oh what would a tier list look like in this game?

10 second tier list… GO:

Ryu
Sagat
Guile
Blanka
Everyone else
Dictator

Ouch poor bison, I wonder what he did to piss Capcom off in this game lol.

He raped too many people in the buttocks in the previous game

All joking aside, dictator isn’t terrible. Just bottom. His torpedo is still good. His scissor kicks were just toned down a tad too much. And of course no invulnerable reversal.

Well Mame speed is insaine, like 2x as fast. GGPO has severe desync problems, and audio bugs, tho it runs at the right speed. Supercade also has the benefic of recording and archiving all matches.

Thanks alot guys, its played out as the seeding had it, so we get a grand final with the two favourites. Thanks for the replay link, hopefully paskis and I can team up to get this captured and put on youtube.
*Your Vega is excellent in HF, the best I’ve seen, its just a shame the best player in your bracket is Shoto and not Guile (as it might well have been during HF’s prime), Vega does real nice vs Guile imo. Thanks again.
