The Ryu Matchup Thread - Good Ol' Fundamentals

Nash’s only true reversal on wake up is Super, everything else will get stuffed. Even his V Trigger activation will not allow him to escape a proper meaty.

Any tips on Ryu mirror match most especially defensive ones?

Nash has no reversal options outside of Super as Rice pointed out but its not that simple, there is a reason Nash’es V-Reversal is the 2nd best get out of jail free card in the game that will only loose out to Light/Medium tick throw reads and when you know you that and the Nash knows that you know that. That opens up for the rest of Nash’es wakeup game.
Just take a look again at how many times Julio got Li Joe on his back during this set and watch what happend, Julio plays a character that has better options for dealing with Nash on the ground than Ryu does but he still looked utterly foolish at times and i promiss you no other character in the game has that potential to turn the worst sitiuation in the game into a potential game winning one. I’ll take Nash’es wakeup game over Ryu’s any day of the week.

If FADC was still in the game then Ryu’s wakeup game is hands down better… but without it, the risk of doing a DP vs the risk of eating a tickthrow (120 dmg) isnt comparable… not even close and even if a DP hits it will net you 120ish dmg, prob slightly more because of a possible counter hit, while Nash V-Triggering a Overhead, a Tickthrow, a Throw… leads into a potential 350+ dmg and possibly the corner, he has a stupidly good wakeup game that everyone seems to sleep on and i cannot fathom why after the masterfull preformance that Joe put on at Winter Brawl. To me its headshaking, mind boggeling…

I love this mirror. So much to think about. Some things I keep in mind:

[list]
[] From almost full-screen (but not quite), your jump tatsu will hit them standing. This is very useful if your opponent wants to trade fireballs at long range. There is no followup after jump tatsu though, unlike in previous games.
[
] st.MK is a good poke against a lot of Ryu’s options, like cr.MK and cr.MP. Remember that V-Trigger into CA is a good option here.
[] Make sure your Crush Counter punish for DPs is on point
[
] Make sure you make good on the threat of V-Trigger into Super during fireball exchanges.
[*] Personally, I don’t like the idea of Tatsu through fireballs. You can’t do this on reaction, so it needs to be a read, and Ryu can do a huge punish if you mess up.

  • Things I learned tonight
  1. AA Birdies Bull Revenger with s.rh you can get a grounded or aerial crush counter for at least 200.
  2. Against characters with 3 frame jabs, end combos with mp DP. It’s a true meaty that lets you pressure with s.mp
  3. Most characters can be hit with fierce DP after s.mp, s.mpxx, while crouching everyone except for Chun.
  4. Max punish Karins DP with a neutral jump punch, cr.fiercexx DP due to the fact that she recovers crouching and can’t be hit with Ryus best crush counter (CC s.rh, walk forward, s.mp, cr.fpxx DP)
  5. Target combo, V-trigger, DPxx Super in the corner is insanely height specific for super to connect but it’s very satisfying.

Hi Forum!

This video shows the moves all players should be punishing and how other character will punish Ryu.

Hi Forum!

Here is my new Ryu Vs. Cammy setups video. You can even use these ideas for your own character when fighting against Cammy. Please Like the video on YouTube and leave your feedback. I’d love to know what you think about what I found for you.

NEW!!! KaizenMaster’s Zatoichi Setups

P.S. Thank you to Darren Wright aka “SpadesDaGreat” for his help when training versus Cammy.

I played couple sets with a good laura. I kept getting caught with an elbow and and immediately into a command grab type move that i really had no answer to. I tried to mash dp at one point to see if that would interupt it and i think i still got caught. Any ideas what i could have done here. Normally i have no issues with lauras but this guy knew her well. If youd like to see the sets my cfn is ordeproject in the battle logs.

Off of a MP Elbow she can confirm into a grab that you can’t avoid if the elbow hit. Off of a LP Elbow the command grab is a mixup. You can neutral jump it and punish but then she can also just block and react to the jump with the AA Elbow.

I don’t think you even need to OS it, and you can get better damage. Just do meaty b+HK, if he teleports you can dash forward once and get cr.HP into dp or cr.mk into whatever tatsu if its easier. His recovery is really bad on ground teleports.

I guess if you wanted to OS, you just mash forward dash during b+HK. The good thing is you can practice by setting the dummy to guard all and recording a wake up teleport and wake up block.

Is the elbow safe on block? I dint recall but i think i was blocking the elbow then getting thorwn.

LP Elbow is -2, MP Elbow is -7, and EX is -11. If you block a LP Elbow, press your advantage with MP which will beat anything she presses. Any other blocked elbow, you can get a good punish.

I’ll have to look into it again. Could’ve swore he ports out too far for a dash in.

Anyone been using meaty s.fp? Setup right it can be +4/+5 on hit, 0/+1 on block. Can do the something similar with s.mk. For example if they back roll after ex fireball, dashx2, s.mk is an auto setup meaty that hits on the last active frame so it’ll be neutral on block and +4 on hit. One of the main ways I deal with Rolls.

I’m confused about Cammy.
The framedata guide has nothing to offer in terms of Cammy’s Cannon Strike from simple jumps or Hooligan Combination.
Only thing I’m certain of so far is that Cammy is negative on block when she does that sweep move from hooligan and positive if she uses that as an EX.

I suspect it’s a height thing, where she’s negative on regular cannon strike when she hits you above the waist, but I’m not positive on that since I got counterhit for trying to challenge that quite a few times.

Ive tested cammys divekick a good bit in terms of frame advantage, above the waist is always negative but she still has a 3 frame jab so unless you are using your stand jab after you can still get a trade/counter hit. To be positive at all she needs to hit extremely low, slightly below the waist in the leg area is usually 0 on block.

Speaking of Ryus stand jab I’m questioning whether it truly is 3 frames. I noticed in training mode I could not get s.jab to interrupt the s.mp, s.mp frame trap. This was with the dummy set to reversal jab post-block. Now when I tested with Laura her s.jab would interrupt.

Probably a range problem.
If you go for b.HK>st.LK vs. Chun Li for example, her reversal cr.LP cannot beat Ryu’s st.LK even though it should.
It always trades.

Maybe the same problem in this case.

What can I do against R. Mika??

It seems like everything she does is safe or stuffs my buttons.

She can’t really do much about Ryu fireball zoning IMO. Also the majority of Mika’s I have encountered like to use her chargable drop kick to get in and almost never feint the move. This means you can parry them for being stupid and chunk her life bar.

Basically do not let her get in or give her a chance to keep momentum. If she has momentum you will have a hard time and most likely lose. If she does not she is absolutely no threat in neutral to Ryu IMO.

How are you guys tackling the Dhalsim matchup? I’m not gonna lie I haven’t even won a single round against a decent Dhalsim. I dunno how to approach his gimmicks at all. I don’t even have reactions to the teleports he does tbh. Feel hopeless in this matchup.
