The Ryu Matchup Thread - Good Ol' Fundamentals

You still have to be wary of throwing fireballs from certain distances against Chun, Too far and she’ll get a free slide to push you back with impunity. Too close and she will hit you with that slide. It is absolutely react-able to slide through a ball. Not 100% of the time but the threat is there. I find it helps to wait a half second to one second after you have that tendency before you throw out that fireball.

The Chun matchup is not easy, she pretty much beats all of Ryu’s options in neutral until she gets knocked down, where even then you have to be on point with your meaties and baits or it’s just hurt city.

Also, throwing fireballs outside of her cr.mk range works decently enough for me… Sometimes… Still a frustrating matchup

In the video Daigo saw the Nash do V trigger and DP’ed it.

The translater confirmed that Daigo reacted to V trigger and the DP auto corrects no matter what side Nash is on. Pretty interesting if I do say so myself. Thought you guys should know.

Oh and btw japs confirmed that Ryu is S++ tier and is the best in the game… pls stop saying hes shit when hes very strong.

Until a low tier character wins a heavy tournament…and takes Ryu’s place.

I’m looking for tips against Rashid

To me, a reactable move means they can see a fireball and know it’s actually a fireball, and punish. Not a twitch movement that may or may not be a fake.

The number of moves that are reactable to fireballs in that way in this game are actually pretty low.

I classify moves like chun slide in the same category as most jumps. See movement. Guess that it’s a fireball. Punish if it was, get punished if it wasn’t.

A move that’s more reaction based is something like cammy super or vega v trigger. See fireball. Punish fireball. In Sf4 it was moves like Dudley or Abel ultras

If people are reliably jumping over fireballs or doing stuff like slide under, your fireball is predictable. I would suggest more fakes, better fakes, or less predictable patterns.

Usually if i eat a slide it’s because i threw 2 back to back at close range and they guessed on the second.

I play this match a lot. It seems tough. Ryu has options, but it feels like I’m trying to cover too many angles. I feel like if i were good enough to be ready for every option, Ryu should win. So I’m not really sure if it’s actually bad, or my level of play in the match needs to improve.

That said, i know most counters to what Rashid does. What specifically do you need help with?

Tripple post hotness.

Been thinking about that Nash matchup. Starting to think Daigo no fireball approach might not be optimal since Nash is going to v reversal twice per round for a minimal punish anyway.

Stocking super is cool, but ex fireball can get you in on hit and give you advantage in a fb fight eliminating some of his ability to dictate tempo.

Thoughts?

I think a fireball or 2 just to get the safe approach isn’t a bad idea. After all, doing LP fireball and dashing up makes Nash have to make a choice. Either absorb the fireball but be a frame disadvantage or dodge it. I think the problem is people throwing fireballs naked without an approach in mind. That being said, don’t throw too many and if he has V-Trigger stocked, just be mindful.

I usually play it kind of like a chun trying to bait your fireball in 4 to punish with super/ultra. His startup is slow, so I just throw a fireball when I see him throwing his. Doesn’t do a lot other than keep him from using them to move forward and apply pressure, but it helps in that regard. I try really hard not to use EX fireball at all. Only time i ever want to use it is when I start to get desperate to get in or get some pressure going, so it feels like a bad habit.

I think vs Nash close - mid range fireball is fine because he cant really absorb that on reaction. So you can use it to cancel out his booms or at least get him to make a decision.

It’s just about knowing when.

When daigo doesn’t throw fireballs against Nash, Its because daigo believes Nash is sitting to v skill (Nash probably full screenish) and daigo is just moving forward and pushing Nash back and into a corner. You only really use fireballs in this match just outside of footsies and not mid or full screen

Sweep is key in the Nash match, you really have to get him on his ass and start working him to the corner. It’s worth taking the risks of it getting blocked. Also if you get v trigger before him there’s no way he’s absorbing fireballs at that speed.

Any tips on how to auto correct dp most especially on cross ups?

Depends on the lag input and buffer window unfortunately. If you hit punch within 3 frames of the cross-ups (meaning your opponent) switching sides, you’ll get auto correct.

Past that, you need to time your inputs so that f, D, df coincide with the correct directions. Usually I do f, D and then change the df depending on when they land.

You can also mash df,d,db then hit the button as he crosses up.
Also you can input the uppercut normally, then delay the button press until the crossup occurs.

I find the method described by BeastEG more reliable though.
All are pretty specific timings though.

Hey guys its me again… asking for help again.

My Ryu is getting stronger everyday and I am loving the progress I am experiencing… however I have yet again another crutch… CAMMY!

GODDDDD Cammy is unbelievable… her normal are so strong and so long and everything leads to big damage… and you can’t jump at her at all because her CA will catch you the second you jump and her uppercut is so horizontal that she can clip you from anywhere… fucking slut man.

What do you guys do to deal with this MU? Also her V-Skill… as strong as it is, is actually very easy to parry… and leads to a cr.hp xx hp. dp

What ranges do you guys keep to deal with her in neutral? When is a good time to shoot fireballs? I learnt that when she has V-Trigger stocked that shooting fireballs from mid to far range is stupid because she can just activate V-Trigger and then spiral arrow… super easy confirm into huge damage and huge stun. Please guys I need videos or advice… I don’t want to lose to my mates Cammy again lol.

The Cammy matchup is actually pretty straight forward.

You basically covered it:
Play footsies, throw fireballs from just outside her normal ranges, keep and eye out for v-skill and hooligan shenanigans, don’t throw fireballs from reactable ranges or jump in when she has CA stocked, don’t press buttons on her cr.MP.

Keep in mind that her regular divekicks are minus on block and her ex and v-trigger divekicks are positive, destroy her when you catch her uppercutting.
Be tight in your frame traps and meaties because of her 3 frame jab. @Highlandfireball made a good video with a bunch of meaties that body button pressers.

Usually if you lose this matchup, you lack fundamentals or get plainly outplayed because there’s no advantage either character has over another when both understand what each others strengths and weaknesses are.

Honestly if you want to know how to body Cammy in SFV read this http://sonichurricane.com/?page_id=1702 and try to apply it bit by bit to your game.
It’s really as 5-5 as a mirror match in the matchup chart in my opinion.

Wouldn’t say outplayed… I just get overwhelmed with her amazing offence… I dno her ranges or anything… so just a little bit of hw will help me. I was just hoping for specific things to help me.
