The Rufus Match-up Thread

Far Standing HK on a grounded opponent and airborne opponent have different juggle points.

I also tried Far Standing HK on Daigo c.mk. It seems to work on Daigo because he does c.mk on reaction to you getting in close.

Thisguilekillya, against Ken and Akuma, I use ultra 1. Ryu gets ultra 2.

Ken’s recovery for fireballs is pretty useless, very rarely will you come into a situation where you will get outzoned thanks to his fireballs. I also find that you get a lot of chances to land dive kicks here. Ken players really have to be on point with their mix ups, but a lot of them tend to aim for kara grabs vs. low forward vs. stand strong after they do a cr. lk on wake up. The idea is that after a sweep or whatever knockdown, they do cr. lk first so messiah goes over their head and the last hit whiffs (if they throw on wakeup, they will certainly lose to ex messiah, just be sure to pay attention if they are crouching or not to know what they are aiming for).If they man up and go for kara grab after a cr. lk or cr. jab, you get a free dive kick or ex messiah. Crouch forward can beat/stuff your jumping only if they do it immediately, but for the most part, it will lose to dive kick, and lastly, st. strong will beat your dive kick attempt. Not all Ken’s will aim for this option, but for the ones that do, you can just calm down and try blocking a bit more, simply because they aren’t the ones that aim to throw, they aim to zone you out with normals. When you come across a player like that, you get to play footsies, lots of sweeps when in range, lots of cr. fierce if they try to whiff pokes, and use more mid screen dives to beat their cr. forwards. Back to the reason to pick ultra 1, you can still land cross up dives into target combo, you can react to his jumps with j. rh, and stand rh is pretty good here too, just like in the ryu match. As for a good reason why you shouldn’t use ultra 2 is because Ken doesn’t have to rely on fireballs, his focus is kinda crappy, so he doesn’t use it, and since his ground game is his main strength, you aren’t going to catch him jumping in unless it is safe. I feel like you have out poke and outzone against him, well place dive kicks are a must and ultra 1 certainly rewards you for doing them.

Akuma, ultra 1 is great here too. A large reason I say this is because I hate waiting for Akuma to recklessly throw something out when the time comes. I’ve played Perfect Legend a lot and the time doesn’t come, when I get the ultra, everything is still well placed and spaced properly, so ultra 2 ends up being blocked. I just find myself wanting to hit it so much that tell myself it’ll hit, knowing that if it does, it will most certainly kill him. As for ultra 1, you get guaranteed damage. You land a j. rh to stop demon flips, you can do a forward throw, dash forward twice, jump in, most of them will teleport away from the corner, so you just land then immediately do jump fierce towards the direction they are teleporting, then target into ultra. And dive kick into target to ultra really hurts him. Ultra 1 also forces me to rush him down, it makes you take chances rather then sit back and wait for a mistake that may not come.

As for Ryu, I prefer ultra 2. His fireball game is stupid if you don’t have it. In vanilla, I’ve lost a lot of matches to a very good Ryu player because when the end of the round came, I’d have no meter and no ultra left. There are only so many fireballs you can dodge before you either get chipped out or get killed for jumping into dp. This game is a lot better about all of that. Ultra 2 can be used to stop ryu from jumping in, from focusing, from throwing fireballs, from backdashing, for whiffing a dp, and you can even combo into it from a st. rh. The stop ryu from throwing fireballs part is easily the best, it forces him to try and poke you, I won’t lie that his cr. forward is the best move in the game, but we all know that it loses to dive kicks. For the most part, when it comes down to the end of the round and you are sitting on ultra 2, ryu has to stop playing his game and play yours, think about all of the options you have already taken away from him, ryu has to come to you for damage, when this time comes, you get to punish whiffed cr. forwards with sweep, you get to dive kick, you get to move forward, and also punish whiffed pokes with cr. fierce (which might make them attempt to focus to punish your next one). Be sure to always be on guard though, if you are playing a ryu that doesn’t know about his lack of options, you will surely hit them with ultra 2, if you are playing a great ryu, they may try to jump straight up to bait you into using it, they might try to throw out qcf lk, which is the fake fireball. Just be on guard for that kinda stuff and you will be fine.

As for my own personal gain, what do you guys do against Gief? My friend Nate has decided that he no longer wants to jump in, so he just walks forward with st. strong and whiffs st. lk into green hand. If I try to counter poke, the lk will counter me and then get him a free mix up from an ex green hand. If I wait for him to get close and try to st. jab/st. mp./st. mk/sweep to attempt a poke war, I find it losing for the most part. Cr. fierce is great from far away, but once he gets close, I seem to come out on the losing end. The worse thing about all of this is that once he gets the lead, he walks backwards and turtles up. I might be narrow sighted here, but I can’t dive in, cr. fierce isn’t going to do anything, and jumping in seems like a horrible plan. So I walk forward, trying to poke at him until I get close and I try to walk him to the corner. Once he gets there, I still don’t know what to do. I started by trying to do dash up throw, which is not safe, I was trying to whiff dive, but that just gets you hit and… well yeah. This match fucking sucks. Any pointers or ideas? I’m running ultra 2, mainly to prevent jumping (useless thanks to him not jumping) and to stop him from using lariats. I’ll land this every now and then simply from whiffing dive into ultra.

the matchup just sucks. You are doing exactly what I’m doing. I was using u2 as well since super came out but now I’m trying U1. Problem is now I don’t play against any giefs anymore. Only thing I think you can do is prevent yourself from walking to the corner. C.hp all day until he starts jumping. Gief will either jump or lariat. I try to bait those lariats by doing c.lp.

another thing to note is if you block a green hand that’s deep, either random green hand or dropped combo, you can reversal ultra regardless if he fadc it or not.

I have 20+ matches from vegita-x aka IFC Zangief vs me. It’s old as in beginning of super. Also he doesn’t block so you see some weird stuff happen lol. He’s very offensive minded gief which is good or bad.

when you on xbox live toi yet? I want to play you and shinlad and the rest of your crew lol.

Shinlad’s name is shinlad88 I’m toiyet84 and our boxer player’s online name is aaron brooks, we are all on 360. Our native Ryu player, TJ is on ps3, his name is monco43.

Shinlad is really the only one of us who plays online. The rest of us just meet up once or twice a week for games. And right now, my live account just expired, add to that a shitty internet connection and I’m not sure yet if I want to renew it. I’ll let you know if I do though.

Also, I saw your matche versus starnab. You played very solidly in that first match, but it all seemed to crumble when he started using flame kicks to knock you out of the air. Did you get to play shinlad in the tournament? I remember him telling me that he beat a rufus player.

I never adjusted after the first game against starnab. I actually feel better losing the first match because I’m the one needing to adjust. But when I win the first game, I start to go autopilot and not readjust to their playstyle. If I had another shot at starnab I think I would have played much more solid than the first time.

I lost to Shinlad in losers semi’s. I usually play solid against bison, but I just wasn’t reading right plus shinlad played solid probably due to you guys playing each other a lot plus he got skillz lol.

I’ll add all of you guys for now in case you do resubscribe. I need to get some matches in with you guys and also my louisiana peeps probably would want to play with yall. I also run a stream whenever I’m online playing so check it out if you guys want. ranmasama’s channel on Justin.tv It’s not a 24 hours stream thing, its only on from time to time. But it saves recorded matches for 1 week.

hey, i’m a bison player and i’m planning to go to a tournament here in cali soon. i’m trying to identify the options every character can use to shut down the EX Psychocrusher as a getaway option on bison’s wakeup. For example, after the knockdown, ryu has jump in OS DP, chun li can downforward roundhouse and kick from behind, and she also has an OS c.hk or s.hk upon jump in.

What are rufus’s options to beat this escape option? i know off of a untechable knockdown, rufus can time his dive kick to hit behind bison, which will hit the ex psycho crusher’s tail and beat him out of it. are you guys aware of anything else I should watch out for?

If you are extra generous, please let me know how you option select/straight up beat EX Devil’s reverse and teleport as well

Off a safejump Rufus can punish with cr. fierce on block.

props latino for the help. if anyone else has any input, i’d be glad as ever for anything

rufus can also ex gt on block. Also U2 if they chose that. In some cases U1 works depending on distance. Even though ex psycho can get punished, it’s a hella good move to fuck up rufus rushdown. Just change up on when you do it.

I think we need 35 separate threads for each matchup. I think it would be more organized than this lol

What are tips for the ryu, ken, chun matchup?

Guys, give me some tips on how to face Sakura! I’m getting obliterated, I don’t know what to do. It’s hard to rush down because of her crouch fierce, and once she’s in it’s seemingly hopeless since ex messiah goes over her almost every time.

Jump in with a delayed dive kick. Always catches normal anti airs off guard.

hey guys i’m having a hard time against Akuma after he gets a untechable knockdown. If I don’t have ex meter for messiah kick, what are my options on wakeup? Are my only options: backdash, and block? He uses DF palm on my wakeup by the way.

just block. Rufus is pretty free on wake up, moreover vs Akuma. also, dont EX messiah on wakeup vs safe jumps, just block and find a way out.

Akuma has arguably the best okizeme in the game so if you get knocked down it’s gonna be a bit hard to get out. But if you manage to block enough, tech a throw or jump/backdash out you’re good. Ex messiah is probably not gonna do you much good if he safe jumps, especially since U2 beats all followups.

You can use ex messiah if you know he’s gonna go for a throw or something unsafe but it’s generally not in your favour. Can be worth putting out once in a while just to let the Akuma player know that it’s a card you can play but like I said, often a bad idea. With some luck and 3 bars you also get an ultra

hey i need some better advice for the Sagat matchup…getting slaughtered every time I fight one :frowning:

Fireballs, fucking roundhouse kicks, and rushdown on my wakeups = I die horribly :frowning:

Focus the fireballs to build your ultra 2, which will either let you hit them the next time they throw one or stop them from throwing them. Also try jumping straight up against the low ones and cr. fiercing under the high ones.

Walk and block your way into Sagat, your sweep and cr. fierce can be used to go under his st. rh.

As for his rushdown on your wake up, his options are fairly limited if you just block and wait for him to get of range. His overhead is blockable if you pay attention to it, his jump ins aren’t very tricky, and if he does a poor tiger knee, you can punish with st. jab into st. strong or use st. jab into ex tornado.

Lastly, you win this match by making him deal with your rushdown shit, not vice versa. After a sweep, you can do jump in mk, which can hit on either side, you can do mix up dive kicks, you can wait to see if they dp then throw if they don’t, or block the dp and punish. You also get some dirty mix ups after a forward throw, then dash forward twice and do jump mk. Oh yeah, target combo into cross up dive is pretty dirty as well. Ultra 2 shuts his fireball game down, it also beats his jump ins and you can react to his tiger knees if you are super quick. Honestly, ultra 2 is a game changer for this match.

Other things of note, don’t blindly jump or dive in hoping to score a lucky hit, work your way in the ground and dodge the fireballs by either focusing or jumping straight up then diving back to the ground. If you jump too high, you will eat Rh. Also, he likes to eat messiah a lot, his rushdown strings aren’t very useful against it. Except for his cr. lk, st jab st jab, you can ex messiah reversal everything he pressures with.

also use sweep a lot vs sagat, he doesnt stay crouching that much vs Rufus…he shouldnt, so take advantage of that, be careful of jumpings though.

can we take out the other match up thread stickied? We need to discuss more match up stuff because the pros dont share SHIT>
