The Rufus Match-up Thread

Hmm Sorry for not being here forever, Had some complications with RL stuff. Anyways, I added the OS stuff to the Rose match-up… Anyone wana throw some info up on chun-li?

double post.

Chun Li’s like to back dash to escape dive kick pressure. If you notice a backdash happy chun, go for full jump fierce’s to hit her out of the back dash. Then continue dive kick pressure. This matchup is free, probably Rufus’s easiest matchup IMO. Also, like other keep away characters, delayed dive kicks will beat out pokes like s.mk and s.hk. Don’t dive kick her if it’s gonna come up short cause you’ll eat c.hk. Chun can safe jump rufus after an untechable knockdown. Good chuns will try to get players to waste EX meter after she safe jumps, so just expect that and don’t waste meter. Good chun players will also go for reversal EX bird kick instead of anti air spinning bird kick. Sometimes after a blocked s.lk just block instead of going for s.hp or throw (this is true in pretty much all matchups).

Alright ill use it but i beg to differ for the easiest match-up I think Sim is extremely free and easy.

Rufus has a safe divekick setup after a forward throw VS chun, she cant really do anything except EX hazan shu, I guess you could punish that by OSing the divekick with BBT but…mmm, dunno about U2 vs Chun…I mean, it “might” work, but Im not so sure

Hakan is probably easier.

I use U2 against chun, can catch her fireball and if she tries to nj.hk she eats ultra. Also chun players always panic once they are in the corner and will try to jump out or do something stupid that I can catch them in U2. It’s actually one of the only matches other than blanka that it’s an easy decision for me to choose U2. Plus I don’t feel I need the potential for dealing a lot of damage at once with U1.

Bolded #1

I prefer to sweep over the jump fierce. One way I get chuns to stop backdashing a lot is to knock down and os sweep (super low divekick that will hit on block)

Bolded #2

If you can predict ex sbk, neutral jump fk/hp hp x hp gt is a much better punish than block.

As for rufus’ easiest matchups, I think a good dhalsim is really a lot harder than I used to think (back in vanilla he was ridiculously free but now i think its harder even with u2)

I used to think chun li was also really easy until:

Chi-rithy also knocked me out of T11, Canadian nationals and has some insanely good reactions

Also I use U1 against chun

Wow, Fei Long is truly one of Rufus’ worst matchups. At first I thought it wasn’t that bad until I found out EX chicken wing beats U2 at close and medium distance, if they’re far away they can just back dash. :bluu:

FADC Backdashing after a blocked ex-messiah can also be punished with ultra 1, I tried forward dashing in training mode and could only block fei’s U1 half the time after a FADC’d ex-messiah.

I’ve been experimenting with some tricks against Fei-Long but it doesn’t seem like Rufus has any solid ways to keep the pressure on Fei. Fei pretty much forces Rufus to be defensive, which is a horrible spot for Rufus to be in. Let’s say you get a knock down: if you go for the cross up they can chicken wing out, if you go for the throw they can chicken wing out, if you ex messiah they can chicken wing out and just trade for little damage, if you just sit there and block they can chicken wing out and they’re safe! If you go for dive kick pressure or a dive kick bait on wake up: if you’re too high chicken wing willtrade in the air, if youre too low u block and he’s safe. The only thing I’ve tried is throwing out a crouching medium kick at the EXACT moment fei does point blank chicken wing, this way fei will fly across rufus and Rufus can punish, but still, if fei has two bars he can just go for his regular reversal and ur screwed.

Looking for some serious advice in the Fei matchup from tournament caliber Rufi

I enjoy fighting fei. You don’t have to rush him down, you can outzone him all day long if you play it right. I like to play it at mid distance, abusing st. mp to stuff rekka punches, sweep to bait him into jumping or to knock down, cr. jab ex tornado to punish rekkas, and cr. mp to stuff all jump ins. You can also react to chicken wings from mid screen by just pressing st. fierce, it will either trade or cleanly beat it out.

As for rushing him down, don’t go in until you land a sweep or a throw. If you think they are going to chicken wing on wake up, whiff an early dive in front of them and try jump back fierce punch, you should beat them out cleanly from the air. If you think they are going to flame kick, you can do cross up dive kick, if you time it right, you will always beat the flame and get a free combo. The only thing you have to watch out for is the fei’s that use ultra 2, it will beat out all of your dive kicks, cleanly beating cross up ones because it makes his hitbox expand. If you see that someone picks it on you, aim for cross up dives after knockdowns until they get meter, then land a knockdown and just empty jump over for the punish, they’ll switch to ultra 1 next time.

I also prefer ultra 1 in this match. Ultra 2 doesn’t really suit me here, unless you fei focuses a lot, if they are focusing a ton, you’ll want to try throwing out more galatic tornados, this usually works pretty well for me. Ultra 1 still works great when you corner them, if you can react to their jump with your own j. rh. and you can always get it from a cross up dive into target combo. Another thing is to be patient, just block their focus and let them dash in, you can land more ex messiah’s this way, be sure to always either delay your lk follow up, which can cleanly beat flame kick, or to do nothing and throw, this works when they are start to wait for you to do the lk follow up.

After watching that video, you see that there are a lot of pressure situations that come from having blocked a chicken wing, be sure to learn to press fp on reaction when it happens, it trades in your favor, resets the distance, and stops fei from having an easy way in. As long as you are on point, you can out poke him, outzone him, and even rush down when you get your mind games going.

Let me know if any of this helps of if you have any more questions.

^thanks jake, that was the one problem i had against fei( chicken wing)

Never ex messiah against Elfuerte, he can punish any followup with u2 and dash/backdash FADC, also you will go over him when close so he can u2 you for free too.

Solid advice Toi Yet, thanks.

Guess the OP is not going to change stuff that he posted on the first page, my inputs must be unwanted…

Anyway last post in this thread:

“Blocking an EX Barcelona is a free U2, or you can punish with Glory Kick into EX Snake Strike.”

Glory Kick into EX SS after Blocking EX Barcelona? Any vids on how this is done? O____o

Dont know how it is done but… yea lol they mightve nerfed it since SF4 vanilla. Im not on much anymore due to college, family matters, work, ect ect. Ill try to find more time to get on

Edit: Well, seems my 2 paragraph question was addressed earlier in this thread. Though I will keep my secondary side note question:

Also, on a side note, you guys think Ken is similar to Ryu enough to use U2 vs? I like U1 wayyyy more in general, but have learned to embrace the spin in some key matchups. Ken and Akuma I just cant make up my mind.

After you block EX Barcelona, mash df+mk roll. IIRC since EX Barcelona flies through you, you just mash mk since you’re probably already holding down+back, which is now down+forward. Then just EX Snake Strike. Try it in training mode. This is useful, for example, if the Vega player misses his plink from close fierce or low forward into low strong xx EX Barcelona.

I don’t even use U2 on Ryu; I definitely wouldn’t use it on Ken since his fireballs are significantly weaker.

Really, you don’t on Ryu?? Believe me, I was and for the most part still am carrying the banner for the screw-U2 club, but I have a pro friend who uses Chun, Ryu, and Sagat. And U2 helped me go from never able to score a single victory to won 4 in a single session (vs his Ryu and Sagat). I highly recommend U2 vs Ryu(, sadly). Certainly, I’m sure you’ll make a compelling case for U1, which I’m all ears for, but given my experience vs my buddy, even with how much I love U1, I don’t think I could change back.

I noticed this too, it was crazy how often he did it! Anyone have a good idea when and where it’s good to try these? And vs who, besides Ryu? I have to mess w/ it more. Also, I’ve seen the far HK juggle to U2! BUT… I’ve also seen it not… any idea wtf is going on there? Have to be CH or something? Haven’t had a chance to training mode it up yet.

For U2 to combo off a far st.hk you must activate ultra while they are still rising from the hit. Once they start falling down you will not get all of the hits. I’ve yet to try it off a AA st.hk when they are higher than usual though.

I believe anti air far hk will not juggle to u2 for whatever reason
