The Role of Girls and Women in the FGC

agreed

I agree with every word in this post.

This. There are a good number of top level Japanese female players. What if Evo were to invite them down here and they do well placing in top 8? I think that would help encourage more female participation

real talk

I have no problem owning a girl in a game especially if there is money on the line. It’s not like we’re boxing. On top of that the only reason to have female tourneys is because it’s traumatizing for many women to be around a certain group of gamers. The dudes that show up smelling like medieval times is a good example.

How about building a kitchen for the EVO woman’s tournament and placing a pair of stairs near/inside this kitchen so you can give the stairs to them as a prize for 1st place… jk

Seriously though, this is a horrible idea, and no one will pay this event any attention like a WNBA. There isnt a difference between men and women as far as a video game though. SRK why u mad for?

IMO…

I think a lot of you guys (and gals:wgrin:) are taking this whole thing way too seriously. It’s not like they said women can’t enter the main tourney. This extra tourney is obviously a side tournament. It’s just for fun. I expect that any woman that is really serious about SF4 will also enter the real tourney. There have been events like this before (Ladies of Street Fighter, Gods Garden female invitational, etc), so I’m not sure why people are all amped up about this. I guess cause it’s Evo? Anyway, again, it’s a side tourney. It’s not worth getting your panties in a bunch over. <-- See what I did there?

If we are to question whether this side tourney is a good idea, I think there are two aspects to look at:

  1. Will it be fun?
  2. Will it help foster female FG players?

So, will it be fun? I’m pretty sure it will. Some people, like myself, am actually curious to see how many good female fighting game players are out there and to see what their skill range is. Let’s face it, there aren’t many girls in the FGC. And unless you regularly play with them or they’re in your pool or they make to (semi)finals, then you won’t get to see them play. So, it’s novel. Others will just watch to ogle or to crack wise. But regardless of how pure people’s motivations are, I do think it will be an exciting side event.

Now, will it actually help foster female FG players? This…I’m much less sure of. First up, I seriously doubt that it will actually bring many new faces to Evo. There may be a handful of girls that wouldn’t bother to make the trip normally, but think they could have a shot in this side tourney who come out. But I suspect most of the women who will enter already plan on going.

However…I do think there are two ways in which it could still help ignite the female scene. First, there are probably some girls who play semi-competitively. By that, I mean that they play, and they’re decent, but they don’t go the extra mile to really train up their skills. By having a side tourney where they might actually have a shot at placing or winning could be just the motivation they need to kick it up a notch. And while I don’t think it will bring a lot of new faces out this year, it may cause more female gamers that were reluctant to come that are watching the stream at home go “Hey! I could take them!” and possibly bring them out next year.

Regardless of how it goes down, I think it’ll be fun. It could be neat. It could be epic lulz. But either way, I think it’ll be memorable. So again, for a SIDE TOURNEY, I don’t think it’s worth getting all up-in-arms about.

I agree with every word except this one. This word is just plain wrong. Every other word in the post is gold.

I plan to be there, but I might pull a naomi and no-show.

I’ve already said why I’m against it in the previous thread, but a general summary:

Every single person who plays fighting games competitively has had to overcome that newness to the community and work toward standing with their peers. Best intentions or no, by giving women what essentially amounts to a back-door into the event, what is implied is that their gender makes them somehow less capable of getting in the front door.

TLDR version: No you cannot.

yea that pretty much sums it up.

A side tournament doesn’t get put up on a stage infront of 2,000+ people and likely then streamed to the rest of the world.

:looney:

^ Lol. You post here too?

only posting here because someone asked Anyway. Vidja games aren’t a pregnancy test. So just pick up a controller and play.

People with XX chromosomes shouldn’t necessarily be encouraged to play. They should just play because they want to, not for status. If you troll someone for having bewbs though, you’re an ass (and legit tournaments kick people out for that kind of behavior).

Though from personal experience, most “girl gamers” are bitches. Some are cool though.

IMO- All female tournaments are stupid. Though, if someone pays me, I don’t mind entering and robbing some money (or hustling people at arcades). I’d ask to be paid first to have gas for my getaway car and to drop some at a catholic church as penance for robbing the poor.

Have any women actually come out supporting this side-event? I get that this is coming from the best intentions, but if you’re looking to make the community more inclusive, drawing this distinction is just about the worst way to go about it.

This pretty much sums it up, besides are we looking for actual competitiors here or just some ****ing eye candy?
Because the way I see it anyone who actualy wants to compete male or female is going to enter the main one, the females only tourney is like a scrub tourney for people to enter safe in the knowledge that they won’t see any of the more familier names (unless one of the already established girls here decides to beast on it for the free money), would anyone here enter a scrub event rather then the main event after traveling to a big tourney? I know I sure as hell wouldn’t even for my first one.

Besides females only tournaments are just going to attract the people who don’t care about getting better and just want a laugh, the sexism won’t stop, if anything it’ll get worse because, “Look at them entering a female only tournaent because they’re too scared to have a go at the real thing” and stuff like that and it may even carry over to the women who are actualy trying to compete in the proper tournament.

The role of women in the FGC is to break into it in the same way as everyone else and earn respect as players, rather then being put on a pedestal as eye candy under the guise of reaching out to the female community.

Looking forward to seeing the comments on the stream if it covers the female tournament, you might want to make sure the fake competiors you get entering it don’t see them though.

Why don’t they just have the tournament itself become mixed gender?

Having a female only tournament = crappy idea.

Finding a way to get top female players from Asia to participate in EVO = great idea!

Me?

You seem familiar…

More women should certainly perticipate in EVO. It’s always good to see how they show their skills.
