The Role of Girls and Women in the FGC

i’m actually on this page. I know majority of us are male (and off the top of my head, I know 2 females on this site who’s said their piece in the EVO thread.) But i’m more than curious to spread this to the small amount of female players I know and see their thoughts on this.

I was just wondering if evo2k10 is going to continue the fighting game community’s tradition of insensitivity toward the LGBT community. Historically, the attitude of the community has been one of indifference or even hatred, (top players being lauded for saying “Losing is for *******”, etc) and even making an event based on divisive gender lines is an unhealthy idea in the first place. Anyway, my question: Is Evo going to blatantly discriminate against transgender females, or allow them to compete in this event, for a refreshing change?

Against it.

For one you open the door up for drama, what if a trannie really wants to enter in a female only tournament? Then what? You gonna have them drop trouser to prove the gender?

The main reason ima against it is it that its there is truly no beneficial reason to it. Like UD said in another thread, any ladies there either already plan on playing or are just are there with there b4. There is no reason they should have a special tournament of there own. Now if it was something that the ladies of srk and guy’s girlfriends could just go possibly get to know each other and game then that would be different.

2nd the demand is not big enough, you gotta crawl before you walk. I suggested awhile back that there be a section on the forums for the ladies, so they can discuss sf and gaming and whatever else among themselves. There is no way to keep guys out, but if you want to do something to promote growth of the females gamers start there. Just like with the “noob” section.

imo its pretty disrespectful to have female only tournament, its like saying your not good enough to hang with the guys. If there are girls out there that truly play hardcore they would prob have the same mental. There is nothing physically or emotionally challenging about gaming its all mental stamina and dedication.

yo, btw can we have a white boy only tournament so people who lack execution abilities have a moment to shine?

Yea, Yea, we hear you…

White man can’t FADC > Ultra. I think I seem that movie…

In case you didn’t know or failed any kind of biology related class, men are built differently from women and are typically physically stronger than women. Then again, you’re just trolling. SK needs to lay down the hammer.

There are good female fighting game players. Singling out women by having them enter gender specific events is MORONIC.

By the way…that Potemkin VF match…is from the GRAND FINALS for Super Battle Opera 2003. She was on a team that featured not one but TWO female players. Women don’t need a sideshow tournament to be laughed at at EVO (which is the only thing that will come out of this ridiculous EVO idea). There are already top female players for fighting games, just not in the same number as men, because women play video games in far fewer numbers compared to men. If women can reach the grand finals for SBO then do we really need to hold a females tournament at EVO?

Let’s just invite Choco from Japan. She’ll rape everyone and get like, 3rd a EVO in SSF4 IN the men’s tourney no less. Best female Blanka alive.

There are many good/decent female gaming clans (Fragdolls, PMS, SK girls, etc), and although some of them stick to FPS, who are we to say you can or cant play? If girls want to play, power to them. If they want a female only tourney, that’s a great step in the right direction (nothing could help the female scene more than meeting with fellow girls sharing the same interests).

That being said, they should still be allowed to fight in the ‘male’ tournament if they so choose.

But they will have to play while wearing bikinis

just kidding

or am I?

This is an interesting topic.

Personally my opinion is this: Having a female only tourney sends the wrong message. It basically says one or more of a few things, most of which are not positive:

  1. We know you can’t hang with the men, so you get your own tourney.

  2. We’re putting you on display, rather than welcoming you as players on the same level.

  3. The FGC leaders are interested in encouraging more women to play.

#1 and #2 are clearly bad, but #3 is not a bad thing…the real problem is that I believe #2 and #1 will overshadow #3.

Overall I think this decision came from good intentions, but I think that in the long run, it does more damage than good.

Evo should just be Evo … JUST WHEN I THOUGHT there was some kind of event where there could just be games for the sake of and I could push aside whatever BS I receive because of my gender in videogames there is a FEMALE ONLY tournament lol… what disrespect when it’s not even necessary

I’ve been playing most of my life, and even made a career in Videogames, and while it takes away from playing, I’m still a huge fan of cheering on events

Girls only though? I’d rather not even be a part of the FGC if that’s the direction we’re headed. I’m only one person in the bigger picture of the FGC, but I don’t even want to go to Evo, which is a shame, after finally seeing Evo for the first time last year and having had a great time.

If you don’t mind me asking (sorry to put you on the spot), I would really love to know:

  1. If you play other genres seriously, how does the FGC stack up to other gaming communities, in terms of female acceptance/treatment?

  2. Would you personally be more interested in the FGC if more women were also playing?

Haha, people are already calling the main tournament the “Men’s tournament.”

I have no doubt that the hostile and immature environment created by (some of the) FGC contributes to the low numbers of women who compete. It didn’t take too long after the tournament announcement for the forum to become a simpletons’ bonanza of sexist and idiotic remarks, so I believe it’s safe to say that women have to deal with pressures and prejudice that male players don’t. Will a female player claim top prize in the general SSF4 competition? Not likely, but then again, I certainly will not, but I don’t have to deal with slobbering and offensive children making the experience hellish.

Thus, the idea of a female-only tournament is a Good Thing. The concept of Evo, as far as I understand, is not to designate who is definitively the best player in the world, but rather to bring fans of fighting games together and give people the opportunity to compete, even if they don’t stand much of a chance of winning. Personally, I’d love to see Evo become part tournament part convention, complete with instructive panels and community events, and I believe that’s the direction it’s going. In order to overcome the disincentives that women face in competing, the organization of Evo recognizing and encouraging female players (even if they are not necessarily the best of the best) is a laudable step in building a greater fighting game community where all are welcome.

There certainly are pitfalls to this approach, but I’m hopeful that the good will outweigh the bad.

Thanks for putting me on a spot

  1. are you taking a survey?

  2. same as #1

I do play other games, what does it matter

Warpticonnnnnn hi are you going to evo ~

Well things like womens sports leagues do quite well and pretty popular. I would say that the divide between men and women is larger in sports than it is in gaming tho. Women’s reaction time isn’t any worse than men’s, its really just the interest I think. It might be a good idea to do this for a year or two to develop momentum, confidence, and interest in female gamers. This shouldn’t carry on for too long though because then its just segregation.

HEY! Theres an idea. At evo there should be a whites, blacks, asian, and hispanic tourne… you know, to develop momentum, confidence, and interest with asian gamers.

Nevermind, I was woried that might be how my questions struck you. Please forget I asked, I was not trolling or trying to offend.

Looking at GD and posts by a lot of the people in the FGC, the people in the FGC are completely deplorable in their attitudes towards women in general. I’ve seen almost nothing but misogyny reading anything to do with women on SRK. Having a separate womens’ tourney helps to objectify women in the FGC, forcing them to practically dance on stage for the viewing pleasure of a crowd of men. Furthermore, referring to the tournament as the “Femme Fatale” tournament just goes to show the underlying power of the patriarchy in the FGC.

Lmao

If roller derby were for men people would get killed in the process or paralyzed. You got dudes skating at high speeds on ramps with metal polls around that would be disastrous. Every hit would be near handicapping. Dudes hit way to hard for that.

JayJay has a good Sean. No separate tourneys needed.
