If you read further between the line, “the females” in context has mostly been Annabelle. Nobody else is making the argument that girls are shy or intimidated so they need a special tournament to get more comfortable. No amount of explaining is going to get the point across to her that what she’s describing is not a gender specific phenomenon. So what happens to the guys who are shy or intimidated and don’t have a side tournament catering to their personal insecurities? I guess they’re shit outta luck, huh?
I think this should have been a workshop. Ideally a new players workship, but if it was a junior players or female players (or both) workship, I could get behind that too. I see that as something that says “If you’re not good or confident enough to compete, let us show you how” as opposed to “if you’re not good enough to compete, it doesn’t matter becauseyou can compete with other people who can’t hack it either.”

This kind of brings up one of my concerns about girls involved with SF. I see a couple cases of female SF players being simply e-sports personalities (don’t ask me to list names) who are trying to sell said personality more than anything, and events like this facilitate that. That’s not something I respect, and maybe this is where others vision of the scene and mine will diverge, but its not the kind of people I like being at the forefront of our competitive scene. It’s reeks of exploiting a scene in its infant stages of mainstream appeal, and doesn’t represent a genuine interest in the game.
Pretty much been looping on my ipod constantly since monday. They never disappoint!
at least i’m not the only one noticing that Annabelle is the one out here trying to say most girls at Evo are too shy to enter play with guys…
and i’m still +1 for the workshop idea too.
That’s kind of a big ask for an extremely small isolated minority with no community or support.
That said I’m not convinced that an EVO girls-tourney is the first right step toward developing broader interest in FGs among women. I’d say it would be better to put the idea on the back-burner for a few years and devote some time to finding top-female players and highlighting them on SRK and other places. If by this time next year there were some more women playing at a high level in other smaller tourneys, and the community had collectively gotten over the idea then maybe at that point having a women’s mini-tourney might be a good way to develop more interest and raise the profile e.t.c.
I suspect that at the moment the few serious girl-gamers out there are fairly isolated, and don’t even seem to have the support of the FGC (who to be fair don’t really know much about them\or possibly even believe that they exist!), and that conspicuously exhibiting them at EVO in the midst of controversy and hysteria might actually do more harm than good.
And to the EVO organisers, I don’t think you should feel bad about pulling the women’s tourney, as has been stated before women can still enter the main tournament, and if they do well they will undoubtedly get kudos from the fans (though I recognise that a great deal of women would be put off entering for all the reasons mentioned in previous posts).
I just think that EVO & the FGC in general needs to learn to walk before it tries to run when it comes to women entrants to avoid doing more harm than good.
This post is like a bad abstract expressionist painting done by a college student with too much time on their hands and too many drugs in their system.
It’s only a big thing if you want it to be big. You don’t have to have an evo sized event to have a tourney, just the internet and people willing to participate. It doesn’t have to be female centric either, just female organized imo. Give them a taste of what their asking for.
Like most of you have said before, the whole premise of an exclusive female tournament basically spits in the faces of women who actually put the effort in and visited evo and similar events previously without being led by the hand by organisers.
I’m 99% sure that it won’t be successful in getting a shit ton of women to sign up for the tournament, or getting a lot of them more involved in the scene outwith attending but it will still bring good publicity from the media (online or otherwise) and make the FGC seem more inclusive and boost our image. Only problem with that is people already in the scene don’t really give two shits what outsiders think in the first place, but if it gets Wiz and Ink moar fiiiight money then good for 'em.
I really doubt the girls will get offended unless they have downs… I’m sure they’ll realize people are just, overall, trying to be helpful and they’ll respect that. Some might not want or need the help, and may think it offensive…but others appreciate it a LOT.
I’ve been listening to it daily…volume all the way up. Completely in love with it lol
Females just got different interests, what can you do.
And sure stereotypes can be made, but it’s still based on a truth. Women would rather be doing things that women traditionally like, same as men would rather be doing things men like.
I wonder if there is a makeup forum or something out there going “What role to men play in the makeup community?” with some girls suggesting a male only event and some metro dude saying they’ll be shy.
When this goes down, 1 thing concerns me:
1: Will the ladies event be run at the same time of the main event?
If yes, this means the women competing in both will have to spend up to 12 hours competing in 2 separate brackets.
As a bracket runner from last year (#22) it was rough for me to play 3S teams in the am, and then run the SF4 bracket starting at 5pm. As a player, it’s worse due to alot of standing around/waiting.
At this point I’d suggest:
1: Having at least 4+ setups to run the ladies event faster, and giving them a break before the later brackets in the day, or…
2: Run it on 2 separate days.
NOTE: This type of schedule is rough on anybody. I’ve been cutting down on the tourneys entered over the years so I can enjoy Vegas a little more.

I had just saw it; maybe inkblot will repost it again. I tried to forward that thread to another friend for her input as well. Although…it didn’t help that the very first post underneath it by _______ was a little backwards. That thread tried to take one step forward, and it went one step back almost instantly.
Edit: somebody beat me to it.
Here’s the link to the thread in the EVO section.
why is it so important that we specifically get girls to participate?
Because to be frankly honest…SF4 is just that damn good.
In reality we’re trying to save the sinners who don’t play SF4 through any means necessary, in this case the female populous.
If you don’t play the game, you’ll never reach nirvana…so obviously one unisex tourney is not enough.
Ah, thanks for the link. After reading the details, I totally support this.
I’m still not completely on the same page, but it sounds way better than it did initially.
+1 for the workshop alternative
And also I don’t really see why we need to bring in more females specificly, there’s nothing wrong with just letting them come on their own if they are interested.
edit: Ah the change now is much better, should make sure that only serious players get in now rather then those just looking for the attention, not the ideal but much better and a good compromise.
I skimmed the overall thread, read some viewpoints and all that, so here’s my take.
Personally, i’m not offended by the female only tournament. SF4 has really attracted a vast amount of new players. Who would have seen THAT many entrants at last years evo? No one. There were a good handful of female players that did show up and compete last year for not only SF4, but for the other games offered as well. Observing this last year really hyped me up to see more females the following year and as i see it, Evo is taking a step into following up this turn out.
In general, i understand why experiences or competitive female gamers are/can be offended by this choice. Obviously, we assume that the overall “male population” is considering our skill or needs, thus creating this separate tournament. For females that have gone out there and previously competed at tournaments/compete on a regular basis, it’s only a natural reaction to defend themselves because they have taken steps to get to the skill level they are at. Singling them out for a tournament insults their efforts.
As i see it, regardless of how you take it, already competitive female gamers that play SF4 will enter this tournament. The same mentality should be brought to any tournament, if you think you’re good or the best in your class/game/whatever is may be, show up and prove yourselves. I whole-heartily believe any person who is either serious gaming, or as the passion, will show how and give it their all. Despite all the negative talk, assumptions and what not, if you don’t even try to enter JUST because you’re offended, is a pretty lame excuse to me.
Plus, females can enter both the co-ed and female tournament. It gives us two chances to place, and make names for ourselves. So why the hell not? It’s encouraging, gives us a chance to get our names out there and in general is an advantage just for us. Who would pass that up?
Well, I understand the idea, but its not just woman who try to play in some event, lose and never try agan.
I think a beginner tournament would be a better idea.
