The Role of Girls and Women in the FGC

“SOME” do you know what that means? I’m not saying ALL women need to be babied. There are just some that need that extra push…

and why would you be nervous to play vs people online? If they say you’re bad you leave them and never see them again. done.

The fact that you’re telling them to “get over it” is really selfish, rude, and bitchy. Some of them can’t just man up and play in the tourney cuz that’s how shy they are. The Evo team is helping them with that extra push, the female tourney.
No need to be so rude towards those who can’t ‘get over it’ as easily as you might be able to.

Hey ink and Wiz

No girls only tourney

Lowered entry fee’s for women, but they have to pay/sign up on site

Start a ladies section on the forum with sub forums for Fighters and general discussion to promote growth in that area.

And if you really want some kind of girl action going on at evo do a 2v2 team SSf4 tourney that requires 1 girl and 1 guy and also requires preregistration so you can know if you need to cancel or not ahead of time)

Problem solved

Don’t give me that “can’t” bullshit. Sure it’s harder for some than others, but anyone who “can’t” is just making an excuse.

And as easily as I might be able to? Last time I was on GGPO, I sat in the ST lobby for maybe three minutes, trying to get up the nerve to challenge someone, then logged out. I wasn’t kidding when I said I’m a complete pussy. But I don’t need or expect to have a special easy mode. And as others have said, what about the guys who are shy? Anyone, male or female, can have a shy disposition or lack of confidence, and we all have to learn to get over it or else we’ll always be this way.

Signed

There are a lot of people who “can’t” just do it on their own. They need the extra push, as I’ve said 50 million times… They need the tourney, or the person to give them the pat on the back and say “That was really well played”. Maybe you don’t, or you just didn’t have that option. But to say they’re just making an excuse is rude, you should at least try to be a little more welcoming and supportive.
As you can see a lot of other people are trying to. It’s not hard.

there are prob 2-3k people going to Evo, amirite? Out of that # of people how many dyou think are girls? 1%? less? Even if guys are SHY there’s still 5925927502 other guys who aren’t shy who will play and enjoy gaming. If a girls shy theres a MUCH smaller # of other gamer girls who are willing to step up and play in the other tournies.

No ones saying you need the easy mode, and no ones saying “TAKE IT TAKE IT YOU’RE A COMPLETE NOOB LOLLL!!” they’re just trying to help, it’s less of an ‘easy mode’ and more of a ‘I hope this helps you come out to more tournaments in the future and participate in other events’. If you think of it as an easy mode then you’re an idiot.

Yes a lot of the girls who play prob won’t play again, but some will and some will enjoy it, and maybe even sign up for the main ssf4 tourney as well.
If it even gets 1-2 females out of their shell it helps.

If you cant play with everyone then play with yourself, being shy and female is not a handicap, its just life so learn to deal with it. LOL at calling someone else bitchy.

Women face societal pressures that you, as a male, do not. Society encourages you (and me) to be competitive, and it discourages females. Additionally, the attitude of some in the fighting game community toward women isn’t exactly encouraging participation.

Not…really. It’s just the bottom line. I’m not saying it’s easy to DO that, but if you really want to play, learn, and get better? You’ll take the next step. I’ve been playing FGs with/vs dudes all my life; nobody is going to baby you here. But at the same time, I understand the pressures of being in the environment. After a while, you really DO get over it, and just play. If you’re not starving for attention, there players who can help you get better; more comp is great for the scene, after all.

This thread moves too fast but kudos to a fellow SNSD fan :lovin:

I realize all that. Girls get the pressure put on a lot more though. As Ilthuain said, guys really don’t get that kind of thing at all.
…just read Ilthuain’s post, he’s got it right.

SNSD <3
Sooyoung and Seo Hyun are my favs :stuck_out_tongue:

me toooo, i dont wanna start derailing this thread but its rare i talk to someone says seohyun is one of their favorites

*thumbup

I think only 1 chick here is actually FOR this tournament, and the arguments are surrounded in hearts flowers and fluffy pillows (which I LOOOOOVE those things but not at huge fighting game tournaments)

Anyway I agree w/ darkpheonix

she’s cute no homo…

-on topic- I’m all for female tourney guys just open up and think about how the girls feel getting bashed by some -saying some cuz not all guys are like this- of the guys who are dickweeds and make fun of them. The ones who say “Oh gurlz r bad @ all gamez dey try LOL y r u playin sf4 eediot ahaha”

Maybe a female tourney isn’t the BEST way to solve that problem, but it is one way to try and help.

… Have you heard the new SNSD songs? Oh! is cute

If one really wanted to make it easier for new, shy players, there should be a newbie tournament. I think one is unnecessary, but I can see the argument for one. Having an all-girl tournament says “Girls need extra help.” And we don’t. We’re just as capable as men are. The only difference is that there are less of us with an interest.

Men and women have very different pressures. I’m not disputing ANY of the pressures that have been listed for women as being barriers to playing SF4…but the pressures on men aren’t easy either.

The counterpoint to the “men are encouraged to compete” argument is that since we are expected to compete, we are also expected to be the best. Anything below second place can feel pretty emasculating.

My point is that competing in tourney is really hard for both men and women…and if there are extra barriers for women, I’d love to see them addressed, but hopefully in a way that unites the community, rather than creating “classes”.
**
The ONE THING about the FGC that makes it truly unique, is that I, as an 09 member can compete in the same tourney as JWong and there is a non zero chance that I will face him in pools. Anyone can test their meddle against the best, and all it takes is a trip to a major arcade, or entering a major and trying your luck. You really can’t do that in any physical sport, and you can’t do it in many other non physical sports either (but some like Poker are that way, and that may be part of why Poker is so damn popular with the masses).**

I don’t see a women only tourney as destroying that, but it does create a kind of “class” system and, IMHO, that is not good for anyone.

Girls should be organizing their OWN tourneys if they are serious.

Exactly.

If anyone should be introducing more females to the FG community…it should be the good/top female players.

So, did ever come across any of your minds that maybe girls simply don’t give a fuck about playing competitively in fgs? How many fucking males wanna play these games? LOL

But then we’re back to the original issue, that there aren’t enough women in the community to counteract the pressures created by male domination. I think the intention of the women’s tournament is to get the FGC closer to parity between the genders (although I certainly doubt it’ll be complete in my lifetime). Without women in the FGC, these issues can’t be addressed in any meaningful manner, therefore you can’t increase the women in the FGC community. Action, as inelegant as it may be, is necessary to open the door for the underrepresented so they can eventually become represented enough to encourage others to join.

Just scroll back and take a look at the more egregious comments in this (and the original Evo) thread. We can’t simply snap our fingers and change people’s behavior, but the introduction of a more diverse player base to the community will encourage change through positive social pressures. More women in the community will lead to more policing of sexist behavior, and with that the FGC will become more attractive to women. As it stands, the sexism that is tolerated in the FGC most certainly is keeping potential players out, and the only way that I can think of to address that (without draconian and ultimately useless restrictions on language) is through actively seeking diversity.
