The resurgence and possible oversaturation of the fighting game genre

I really want them to do it this time, but maaaan the gameplay footage out there now doesn’t look super promising. It still looks crazy gimmicky and can you not do wakeup moves in mk? In every match dude just stood over the downed guy with no fear.

yeah i remember quite a few people liking that series. it definitely seemed very competent series from what little ive played of it (of course that was long ago).

A year ago I searched for any sign of high level play on the series (part of my investigating the dev team), and found a combo video on the last game in the series (it had three).

!

With the proper budget, business interest, and the heads of that team; Academy could have been the basis for something interesting. We need more American fighters!

yeah well with Japan taking most of the decent ideas and atmosphere for fighting games i really wonder what any American dev team could make that isnt based on a sport or comic series. i mean, should we go back to the well for a few comic book based games when MvC3’s shadow is looming…i wonder.

Cool beans, even if the air combos looked a little bit on the DBZ side of things looks like there was promise there.

How exactly is the quality deteriorating? Just because SF4 has more lenient inputs? This helps newer players get into the game, but it doesn’t exactly mean that the quality of the game is worse.

The game is obviously still very hard to master, so there’s no problem there. It still takes a lot of skill, and it still rewards the better player. Just because it is a little easier to get into for beginners doesn’t mean the better player won’t win.

The game might be different, and maybe you personally don’t like those differences, but that has nothing to do with the quality of the game.

SRK is so cute mistaking their opinions for objectivity. Awwww

While SF4 isn’t a terrible game, there are to many"exceptions"with SF4’s design that are very annoying for a lot of players. I know its all subjective but…I dunno I just feel SF4 didn’t have the same quality in terms of game design as maybe the old tittles did.

c) it’s more accessible.

you’re seriously denying that having not 1 truly agreed upon accessible console port is a problem.

people like you need to start talking rationally. Yes HDR is inferior to ST. But it’s not different enough to have changed from a great game into a piece of shit. That’s just too much of a hyperbole and if it’s not a hyperbole it’s ignorance. How often have you played it anyways?

Absolutely not, it will merely prove how bland of a game overall that SF4 really is.

It will take a long time to prove this prediction but trust me I can see this happening where people especially top players will definately not give a flying fuck about SF4 especially with there being no money in it.

History trumps personal beliefs about 98% of the time. I’ll root for you, though.

to help steer us away from this SFIV argument (like I said, I wash my hands of this silliness), with all these games coming out, I’m really happy, because of all the choices I’ll have! but at the same time, there’s one thing that I’m REALLY yerning for… a totally new IP.

I don’t care from what company, but I wanna see something totally new. New characters, new system, new everything. Everything coming up is sequels, which I love don’t get me wrong, but doesnt have that same OOMPH as somethig we’ve never seen before!

also, BlazBlue:CS. is it worth the purchase? I know its rebalanced (tager FTW!!!) and has 3 new characters (maximum), but is it worth the full price? I would have liked to see a few more characters (like, 5 or 6 total is appropriate I think) and I hear the music isn’t much different either. what do you guys think?

If I could buy BBCS right now I would. Love me some BB, the fights are frantic. And just watching high level vids is action pack hype juice.

I’ m glad new games are coming out I remember it was hard to get into fighting games due to the fact that a lot of games weren’t available in the store and you had to dig really deep and invest in modding systems and a lot of stuff just to play games.

FPS games haven’t lost their steam. Although there are too many unnecessary additions and removals of features in FPS games, and the transition from being PC focused to console focused; FPS games are still alive and thriving it seems. I’m saying this from an outsider perspective though. I personally do not like most FPS games that have come out. I have only enjoyed the Unreal Tournament that came out last year. I do feel that FPS games have hit their plateau, possibly because of consumer pressure to make games for the casuals.

I expect changes to make fighters appeal more to the general public.

Tekken Cross Street Fighter may prove to be a totally new IP depending upon how they handle them. Sure, it uses the same models and engine as SF4, but CvS uses Alpha’s system, but you’d hardly call them the same game, and there are multiple examples outside of fighting games of similar engines being used in dramatically different ways. GTA was made off of a Ping Pong game’s engine.

Same here.

Oh, and the past 3 pages have sucked balls lol. People…answer the fucking question and move the fuck on…too much dribble about wtf is more execution-heavy going on. Save that shit for another topic. It’s not rocket science. :stuck_out_tongue:

But anyway, to answer the OP, nah, the market’s far from oversaturated. We’ve got MvC3, MK9, and possibly 3SO next year…and then there’s possibly SxT/TxS in '12 (Ono has stated SxT won’t be out for at least another 2 years, and apparently someone stated TxS will be out after SxT), and maybe T7 too. Compared to the 90s, there is barely anything even coming out.

This is me 1000x. I dislike almost everything about SSF4, but I’m playing it because EVERYONE else plays it while EVERYONE else plays very little else. If I want to have any sort of competitive outlet with live people, I must play SSF4. I don’t play it because I think the game itself is that great, I play it because it allows me to be relevant in my local group instead of sitting in the corner of the room practicing combos in “my” game by myself…

You guys should try being real with yourselves. I’ll be damned if I’m caught playing something I didn’t like. Well… I played CoD MW2 up until lvl70 but that was to prove a point.

My main fear is something that is touched on in this thread. It’s about preference. I am a person who HATES most modern FPS. My personal favorite FPS is Tom clancy’s ghost recon. It was just a really well done simulation where you had to use a certain skill and you can’t run and gun. It took different skills than for example MW or the like.

I think most of the ‘haters’ find that games today (fighters and others) are ‘watered’ down and take different skill that they would like. So they keep playing the old ones cause to them those are the ones that truly leave the tactics to the player or were more rewarding. This is true for me in games like Mass Effect 2 and Resident Evil 5 as well. Those games were just…it was not as entertaining/rewarding as their predecessors. They were watered down and almost soulless compared to the old ones. I dislike S/SF4. I play it from time to time, but I hate the art style and the inputs are annoying to me. I find it is too choppy and I hate the ultras. That’s not to say it’s a bad game. I just don’t gel with it. On the other hand I love tekken 6 so that will become my new main, but there are those that find 6 to be the MW/Mass effect 2/RE5 of tekken and completely noob friendly where DR is the ghost recon of the series.

It’s all about preference and personal taste. However, I personally see this trend continuing for sometime due to the fact that it works. You can’t make Ghost recons like the first cause it won’t sell like MW. You can’t make Street fighters like back in the old days cause times and tastes have changed. The problem is that some gamers haven’t adapted or refuse to adapt and that’s fine. Just don’t hate on those that have.

This would be a good topic for general discussion too.
