The Razer Arcade Stick Thread!

MS has stated only XBOne controllers will work with it.

Probably he’s talking about the same ones QANBAs and early TEs had with that thingy that makes the controller work.

But who cares about playing.

You mean the printed Circuit board? there enough 3rd part PCBs on the market to make that a non-issue.
PCB fails? Install a new one. If your tire on your car goes flat do you say the whole car is crap and throw it out or do you change to your space and have your tire fixed/replaced?

Fuuuuuu…any word on how the PS4 is gonna handle it?

Mike Z says that wired controllers should still work… but we don’t know if that also applies to arcade sticks.

I guess we found out at the soonest E3, and the lastest this Christmas.

Wouldn’t make much sense if Sony locked out the PS3-era joysticks but kept the wired pads functional…?

Somehow, I don’t think they’re going to do that unless they get REALLY stupid.
I wouldn’t dismiss that possibly… I seem to remember everybody saying Nintendo always played the smart game but look what they’ve done since the N64 and tell me that’s a winning strategy!!!
No… when a company is at the top they have everything to lose if get arrogant, greedy, and really, really stupid.
Ask Atari. Sega. And possibly Nintendo after the Wii U.

Sony is winning the PR war right now what with MS making mistake after boneheaded mistake and only now is MS backtracking a bit on the used game policy for the XBox One.
Sony may also have a decisive advantage in horsepower this time, too.
(Let’s not even mention Nintendo now… it’s like they really don’t count any more and don’t drive the development of the console market, period, after the N64.)
Amazing how things are 180-degrees around this time! Pre-PS3 launch, it seemed like Sony couldn’t do ANYTHING right.
IF Sony is smart, they will keep doing things to keep the hardcore gamers happy instead of hacking people off with network requirements (MUST ALWAYS be ON and ALWAYS CONNECTED!) and pronouncements on used game utility that’s just going to piss off consumers!!!

MS just doesn’t seem to understand the concept of customer goodwill. Hate to bring in “the cult of Steve” but this is where Apple got things right => MS understands monopoly and the idea of screwing people for every last cent but, unlike Apple, they just don’t understand the idea of customer service and tailoring to audiences much… I’ve never understood the geek crowd that prefers a product so buggy and complicated to require a book the size of the Manhattan Yellow Pages directory to figure out!

<SIGH> Just keep the console prices below $400 launch this time, guys! Yes, most of us want launch systems that don’t melt (glory days when Nintendo AND Sega were both still in the hardware gaming market) but it would be nice not to have to take out loans to buy systems this time, too.

Uhh, Nintendo is doing a pretty good job at driving the market. That’s why both the PS3 and Xbox 360 got motion control systems, and we know at least the Kinect will be making it’s way into the Next gen(long term impact of Wii).

Also, I wouldn’t expect that either of the next gen consoles will come in under $400, the PS4’s 8gb of GDDR5 alone comes to ~$150, and while I don’t know much about the Xbox One, Kinect retails for $100 alone, so that adds a large price to the console. Unless MS and Sony will sell at a loss(which I do not expect this time around, the Wii U is $300, and sold at a loss without being all that powerful) they will be closer to $500, possibly more. The main Competition for the Xbox One and the PS4 is the gaming PC(the Wii U is nice, but it mostly caters to a different group), and with the average new gaming PC $1000(unless you build yourself), the next gen consoles can still be priced aggressively even if sold above cost.

I need to research this but much more consoles other than the PS3 and Dreamcast sold at a lost before.

Got mine yesterday. It is defective and has some strange surface damage covering the entirety of one of the black plastic sides. I’m hoping I can get a replacement.

  1. The latch mechanism is much easier to close/open and holds much better. They are now ONLY using the center latch, not the supporting latches on either side like in the beta. Seems to work very well.

  2. You can no longer push the top panel down to make the side “pop” outwards. I can see any physical changes in the design that would’ve helped this, but maybe they just increased the material thickness.

  3. The USB connector at the stick is pretty cool and much more secure. It has a disconnect feature so that the wire cannot simply be pulled out by accident. Never seen anything like it.

  4. The artwork is meh. It seems basic or unfinished, but it’s not terrible. I haven’t checked, but it LOOKS like they printed the button labels on the art this time around instead of etching the plexi top.

  5. I will try to get some pics up (and any additional changes I can think of) if I have time this week.

What do you mean by point 3? The wire can’t or can be pulled out by accident easily?

The art is horrific. I dont know why they changed it from the Beta’s “Razer Circuit board” art.

Overall, how do you like the arcade stick? Do you recommend it?

Sorry, meant to say “cannot.”

Its a great stick. It has weight and feels very solid. It is still pricey, and depending on how often you really mod or swap parts, the opening feature is somewhat of just a novelty, but i do like the design (aesthetically) over anything else. I also like that the top panel underneath is powdercoated black instead of raw. It looks great without any art under the plexi.

Here are some quick and dirty pics. These are terrible quality (from a phone and it’s dark), but they should be enough to show most/all of the changes: http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/mdsfx/slideshow/Atrox

I thought the pictures were fine.

You’re not going to win a Pulitzer, yes, but they were clear enough and showed what you wanted to show…

Weird. It’s not USB but some kind of square 13? pin DIN.

Shame they just didn’t find a way/licence of hooking up a Neutrik RJ45 jack, because those locking mechanisms are the nicest I’ve seen.

That connector looks interesting, I guess that Razer decided that the best way to address our concerns about the stick was to design a brand new connector.

Which is funny I liked the Type B USB connector, I just didn’t like how they mounted it directly to the PCB. Oh Well.

Thanks for posting those pics!!!

It’s good to see the little aesthetic changes, as well as hear about them like you’ve described.

Looks like they hid the ribbon cable somehow (under the honey comb?) from the main PCB to the light up release button, or did they scrap the light up release button?

The cable plug looks interesting…but I don’t really go in for proprietary plugs…
although I imagine that anyone who changes out the PCB, will probably install a Neutrik anyway just for the sake of USB A/B plugs being easily obtainable if you lose one.

Sounds good if that’s correct about the button labels only being on the artwork, and NOT the plexi. I know that would annoy the hell out of me otherwise.

Thanks again for the mini review!

You’re definitely helping me come to a better decision towards the purchase of one of these.

Does anyone know where I can get a gas spring like the one in this stick?

Just posted this in the Arcade stick thread. I removed the art and added an LS58, new buttons, and 2 hole plugs.
