I’m hoping those extra square bits on the underside of the top panel are there to address the squeaking issue. That was probably the biggest issue of the beta stick in my book.
EDIT: Oh hey, I noticed that they changed the shape of the rear USB connector.
D3V commented on my closed post that licensed fight sticks are required to maintain that button layout. What is the thinking on placing the Red button above the Green button as opposed to the right of the Green button.
I did a quick Amazon search and it does appear that the Red Button’s location does vary from different stick MFR.
As long as you don’t mind soldering then it fits perfectly in the stock ‘project box’. It’s what I did to mine but still thinking about making it full multi console.
In no way do I want to get confrontational, but these are just two sticks I saw on Amazon and they have the Red Button to the right of the Green Button.
That’s how I wired my custom as well, Jelako, but d3v did say “sticks without game licenses” which both of those have.
EDIT: Ok, different game licenses.
More on topic, nice looking stick Razer. Looks like I need to start saving my pennies.
The stick is way too pricey. The Hori FE and Eightarc Synthesis are way better deals for that price range.
The artwork is jarring. The 3D Snake is on a different “plane” and is visually disjointed with the buttons and stick.
For 200$, its only feature is the ease of accessibility for modding…that’s it?!
So late and Xbox only…but uh, will it be compatible with the 720?
Buttons on the side may potentially be a problem (I’m surprised that got passed Beta testing).
This is not looking good…
EDIT: Actually, looking at the neat honeycomb screw holes and storage compartments…it does increase its value. I would price this at around 150-170$, but definitely not 200$.
Cost seems reasonable. A new Madcatz stick is $150. This one has the hinges, storage, and screw holes. $200 seems fair for a new offering. The only other “easy access” stick is the Premium VLX, which sat at $300. I love my VLX for other reasons, but the feature is essentially exclusive.
I seem to recall Razer previously stating that they would have artwork plexi available(and the art may just be a printed sheet of paper placed under the plexi, and it be replaceable out of the box). This is a non-issue for most.
Yeah, the fourth problem concerns me, but I don’t play much on Xbox(I’ve got a modded TE for that).
Side Buttons are nice, they’re easy to access and they have a lock switch. No issues there.
That said, I’m most likely not buying one of these, but I do think it is cool. If I didn’t have my TE I would probably buy one to carry around.
EDIT: Checked the site. The Art is indeed replaceable out of the box, adds another $25 or so to value. Template is downloadable here: http://www.razerzone.com/atrox/template
I am also curious to see a list of changes from Beta Arcade Stick to Atrox as well. The only thing I can see is that that USB cable is different…button layout and inner compartments all look the same.
Also the start and back buttons being on the right side of the stick did not bother most of the beta testers(200, not including sponsored players and TFA) including myself. After one sit in/casual, it’s set in your head like how the start and back buttons are on the back of the TE/Mad Catz sticks.
Price is a bit high end, but as ExtremeYoshiFan pointed out, a new TE is ~150. The only reason people get them for lower is they wait for tournament discounts. The ease of modding increases value and the out-of-box art swapping helps out a lot of people who tend to do that first thing anyway.
So late and Xbox only…but uh, will it be compatible with the 720?
Xbox only is because of licensing, you should know this by now. You can’t have a legit product licensed for both major consoles, it just doesn’t happen. The current out-of-box dual compatibility sticks are not licensed and operate via grey/black market security chips, Razer is a legitimate company so they can’t go that route.
Buttons on the side may potentially be a problem (I’m surprised that got passed Beta testing).
As long as they took the advice of the testers the lockout switch should handle those side buttons fine.
I’m expecting to see quite a few of these at EVO due to the ease of modding and cool factor. Also, shameless self plug but a Link + top fits nicely in their compartment for fast storage.
The USB connector change is interesting, I’d be interested in better shots of it. If someone loses their cable I’d assume they wouldn’t be SOL and could just use another B end cable, it just wouldn’t have the nice strain relief.
Can’t tell if they adjusted the layout from the beta or not, it really did bother me and felt super awkward.
I’m thinking the front compartment on the left – in front of the joystick – could easily be made to fit a PCB in the Cthulu-size class if it’s not already big enough.
Regardless, I don’t think I would keep a USB cable coiled like that. There’s too much tendency for wiring and insulation to break with the way many people wrap their cables… Never liked cable compartments that much and I just don’t use them.
So…
The obvious question is how many Beta reviewers are actually going to buy the production version of the joystick???
(I thought 200 previewers was a curiously high number, too.)
Start and Back are probably lockecd out by the lock switch.
Those are MadCatz sticks with game licenses which is the only time that you’re allowed to use a non standard layout. MadCatz is pretty good with game specific layouts for their sticks.
still not happy I wasn’t in beta… 200 is a little steep for it though. Razer stuff is never cheap and I swear by their mice/keyboards. Will I get? mebbe… I do like the looks of it and it would look even better with some LEDs (green)…
