Here is my team I am currently running I posted it in the Rolento thread as well thought I might as well post it here. I am interested what you guys think and if you can give me any good pointers on how to switch cancel people in with Raven under pressure.
I am trying Rolento/Raven atm I need to find a better way to get Rolento back in when Raven is under pressure however.
Rolento j.HP -> cr.MK -> PC x3 -> Switch cancel -(Raven) cr.HP(loop) -> cr.HP(loop) cl.HP -> qcf + K
Does 399 damage and sets raven up for a good mix up afterwards since he is right at that middle distance of roll or normal wake up. I usually decide to use his overhead/low or j.mk cross up / fake cross up with HP or RH. If they roll i just jump cross up or i walk the other way and do a lp. ninja star teleport cancel mixup.
I think Rolento/Raven have bad synergy. Combos do low damage, you can’t get a force stand/keep standing mixup, and both have bad reversals for switch canceling.
This was the first team I tried in this game and while I like both characters a lot, I don’t think they fit well together at all.
I’m trying Lili just because Raven builds meter well and can combo off Lili’s easy links xx launcher, which actually does good damage with her. Lili’s biggest weakness is that she needs meter to combo on crouchers but the launcher combo solves that. And Lili has easy anti-air which is good against a lot of characters. Raven can deal with fireballs traps for Lili.
I’ve been running Raven / Hwoarang. I love the HK hunting hawk > tag cancel > mixups to raven. Hunting hawk keeps them in block stun so you can’t high low them with the last hit… BUT, if you jab right after the second hit of hunting hawk, they’re out of block stun before the third hit, meaning you can throw them, go low, etc etc and still get hard to blockable situations by either letting hunting how hit overhead or going low just before hunting hawk hits.
You can also teleport behind them after the cr.jab but I’m not sure if that’ll work as a cross up because of the protection in this game. If it does though, that’s a fakeable crossup overhead.
I was just making the point that if all you’re looking for is fast rushdown and mixups there’s a variety of characters that fit that on the Tekken side. In my opinion Raven’s actual 50/50’s are a lot more limited than some other characters because he can’t just target combo into an overhead/low that’s safe on block. I mean, he has stuff, but you can’t autopilot once you get in besides just doing walk forwards jab and hoping they get sick of blocking.
The b.mk mixup is kinda weak because it’s kinda telegraphed. I actually had a guy start jumping out after blocking b.mk and punishing my mk or hk followup on whiff. Obviously that’s not safe and I can bait that by doing the lk followup as a frame trap or just anti-airing with cl.hk or something, but I can’t just force the 50/50 down their throats. Teleport stuff is unsafe unless it’s on wakeup and they can roll out of a lot of those setups. He seems more about actually surprising your opponent with unique angles of attack than getting damage off an advantaged situation, if that makes any sense.
I like doing s.lp a few times into c.lk > s.mp , sometimes throwing in b+mk but not using b+mk as my 50/50. Or I’ll wiff b+mk and do c.mk or something into a windcrosss cancel.
Cr.HP, cancel to the quarter circle back + punch move, hold the punch so it charges up instead of having it come out, dash forward out of the charging animation. Rinse Repeat.
I’m starting to fake a lot of overhead teleport situations with his rdp+KKK teleport. Allows me free license to regain distance and if they risk anything unsafe I get a free punish or at the very least a free jump in
I think this is an important part of Raven’s game - mixing up crossup teleports (I know, not what you said) with Alter Ego. They’re both awful gimmicks by themselves but they’re way different to defend against and look very similar.
so I’m probably feeding trolls or I’m gonna piss some people off, but oh well. a couple pages back people were trashing on online play and what not. I feel online play is important because it gives you access to challenge other players without the inconveniences of the arcade (god knows i still love it though). Also, it teaches you how to deal with “scrubby” tactics. I play cody in ssf4 ae, and I spent a good 2-3 hours in one day practicing counter-hit setups. I thought my block strings and frame traps were the most bad ass things in the world, but as soon as i hopped online 2-3 hours was basically nullified by wake-up dp. Yes, you could say i’m ass, at wouldn’t disagree. but that process helped me as a player and taught me that wake up pressure is something to be earned, more often than not. point is, try to be helpful in your posts if you’re going to criticize it.
which is what i’m gonna try to do hopefully i can say something that hasn’t been covered already. but yeah, the people in the videos aren’t very good, or maybe they’re getting accostumed to lag. but you’re jumping all over the place, and if you dont do that when you play better people then fine, but its a bad habit. I’d know. or at least be aware of the risks. secondly I think kiku mentioned this before, but I haven’t really found a use for using meter in combos really at all with raven. granted I haven’t gotten to advanced stuff or corner loops, but I believe you can play a solid game without all of that, especially since you have A WHOLE OTHER FREAKIN CHARACTER. Which is why i use marduk as my second char, cuz i could learn fancy corner stuff, or do a launcher/tag cancel combo with raven, get decent damage, and get an awesome mix-up game with duk. but yeah, avoid using the meter in combos unless the damage is worth it. also yeah, the bnb would be a little better if you did cr. hp dc cr. hp xx mk alter. or apparently cr. hp dc cl. hp xx lk alter. I still gotta check that out. but i just wanna encourage you to play some better players out there to learn more, and plus its a hell of a lot more fun. I would totally play you, but i dont have xbl and i suck anyway keep it up though, ravens a good character I think totally worth time and effort.
sorry for the long ass post, but whats the advantages of doing lp x 2 hitconfirm link into cr. mp as opposed to his b. mk lk tekken string? the latter is what im accustomed to, but should I be changing that?
