WHERE. When you look at ‘salary range’ for a job you have to look at it at a location. What I make in the DMV is NOT the same as I would make in Nebraska - as well it affects how your money stretches. I came out of school @ around $55k and wasn’t doing great - but thats because of where I was (and the financial stress I put on myself). However, flipping that salary to ‘Texas’ - I’d be a King.
Then you have to marinate on the long term aspects of the money and how far it stretches…how does the pay increase…teachers get ‘steps’ every year that are predetermined and NOT based on job performance. I don’t know how much being a dietician is like being your own business - but that wold mean you can make as much - as you’re willing to work…verse someone like myself who is locked into their pay. You talk about kids…I assume that means wifey. What kind of job does/would she have? My wife doesn’t make alot and won’t, I can’t depend on her capital to increase enough to ‘change the way we live’ or to ‘upgrade our residence’. That affects me because - I want 3 MORE kids - and to do that means I need the room for it…somethign we don’t have in our current place of residency. Translation - yeah I can find cheap affordable housing for myself…for my wife also, but once kids come into the picture - you have to not only look at yourselves, but what kind of space they need, and that you want them to have (like front lawn to play in). Places with better schools often cost more money (ugh we were looking at houses in Chapel Hill, FUCK THAT…them shits the same price as back in MD/VA - but by far it had the highest concentration of good schools and the best schools really in the Raleigh Durham area).
So the overall picture is a bit more complicated than ‘is it good money’. Its not bad money ‘anywhere’ really…except San Fransico I believe - but you need to identify ‘where’, and ‘what’ you want. You also have to identify - in the long term aspect of the position - is the pay going to increase with inflation? 15 years ago, doctors were like ‘universally’ rich, but now? Psshhh…it aint a good proffesion. Insurance alone will erase any good pay you THINK you’re getting. Talk to some dieticians and get their opinion on the pay and how its worked out for them.
Black people don’t/didn’t know what that “vote” would do. So many of “us” wanted to believe that BO would save the world by doing A B C and D. BO didn’t give me a raise…Honey, you work for a private company, it doesn’t work that way. There aren’t any jobs; you aren’t looking in the right places/resume sucks/your salary range is off. Don’t think you can command 80k with 2 years experience…won’t happen.
It wasn’t just people understanding you vote more than once every 4 years - people were sincerely growing more unhappy with how things were going. It was truly unfair IMO, the hole we were/are in is going to take more than a year to climb out of, its going to IMO take a decade for us to get ‘back’ o the 90s again. And honestly, I doubt it wil lever truly reach where we were, it wil ljust feel better because of where we’ve been. So when it came time to reup, democrats weren’t going to be able to hold it…which made matters WORSE off because as you said, getting shit done now…ugh.

I want to settle in Atl, I’m going to school there, but the other factors you mentioned have to play out right for me to permanently stay there. I want 4 kids too lol, I honestly don’t really have preference on what kind of job my chick would have, but I’d like to meet a fellow college grad. I’ve always had a thing for nurses, might have something to do with my mom, kinda like I’m physically attracted to chicks who dress skimpy, but that’s it, anything further it’s women who dress in a sexy/feminine way, but are covered up. Not showing to much skin, moms was the same way, girdles, never wore dresses and dress attire without that and a slip. So when I see chicks wearing dresses with no under garments I smh. I’m used to traditional women who valued their appearance. All the women on both sides come from the old school. They aren’t out of date in dress but keep up the traditions of modesty. So I feel like I’d bring dishonor to my late mom messing with a chick who dresses like a tramp.
But it’s between Atl, Baton Rouge, or somewhere in Texas, Like houston, sant antonio, or Austin. I like living in small city type places. So I would more than likely purchase something in a suburb outside the city limits and just commute to work. Nola is another option too.
I don’t think the capabilities of a Black man need to be called into question. History has proven they are not lacking. Glass ceilings are not about skill, but about perception and recognition of said skill. Navigating corporate America is difficult, and more so when an individual has to face barriers of discrimination. They don’t teach glasses on how to deal with workplace racism, and frankly the human resources person doesn’t exist to help you, they exist to make sure the company doesn’t get sued. If they actually do help you then that’s a bonus. Through being extremely competitive, knowledgeable, establishing a mentor, and actively participating in groups of (Black)professionals of the same field, a Black man can succeed in corporate America.
However I would like to point out that going to into business for one’s self is a lot more productive, and rewarding than going into business for someone else. It’s not for everyone though. Even though the barriers won’t be as plentiful as working for a corporation there are still hurdles to overcome. Even though most people believe themselves to have leadership ability…not everyone does. However if an individual is organized and has a specific vision of what they want, they should do fine.

ATL isn’t cheap anymore…its like Orl…the city itself is pretty pricey. Outside the city the cost become more realistic…but there are more people there so business could ‘boom’. Its also not a small city…
That’s why I’d move to a county around Atlanta, 20 or more minutes away from the city. I know staying here is not very productive, this city has stayed the same for the most part all my life. It has lots of potential, they just don’t develop it aside from the river boating that’s big money here. Being that we are so close to the texas border, they all come here from Orange,Beaumont,Houston. Now if you go to school for pipe fitting, or some other type of plant work, you got it made here. Which all you need is a license for most of the jobs, or a 2 year associates, it might be less than that. I think it’s just a certificate.
