The Rap Thread: News, Reviews, Rants, Opinions Vol 8 - We still don't know bout Wu-Tang

Sad but true. He just doesn’t seem to have the focus he once had, that or his creative inner circle is pushing him into multiple directions and no one real is telling him that he needs to tone down on the pseudo-dubstep beats and love ballads. He seems more focused on creating an identity in his songs than actually spittin’.

I’m still keeping the faith… :p:

What’s the difference koop provide examples homie

A perfectly mastered song will have every layer/channel tweaked to perfection.

In the hip hop genre its highlighted via balance of vocals and beat

Bernie Grundman handle The Chronic by himself…

Nuthing but a G Thang

Samples: Leon haywoods i wanna do something freaky to you… west coast poplock… uphill peace…an a public enemy sample

Job #1 is taking the sample an ‘cleaning’ and balance it. Remember ol’ school stuff was recorded differently an on different format an cause dre wanted the ORIGINALS you have to clean that up. an tweak his channel levels so they are balance an impact…

listen to how the samples coordinate at the 3:20 mark… every sample comes in crisp an feels arranged to perfection… you dont have to too hard cause its all there.

then you have to tweak the vocals an beat to balance correctly with each other. dre an snoop dont sound far away… dont sound too in front of the beat… its as if everything is even. that can take up to 2+ hours just to find the perfect wavelength ( i know unreal knows that from his own engineering ) balance that doesnt exceed the level of distortion.

another tweak that most dont know is the during the arranging… in case you dont know the PREVIOUS song leads into that song… go listen to how that leads into nothing into nuthin but a g thang… seriously… there is a 0:00:002 gap an a bpm (from my djs) change of -8 (give or take) into nbgt that is 95-96bpm… thats knowing a drop an begin point an tweaking that to a point you dont even notice.

Its a LOT an as unreal stated you can HEAR the difference. a better way to hear the perfect master of sound is to listen to thematic type music (ie hans zimmer) an you can hear how every instrument is doing something an balanced with an impact.

You appreciate Mastering when you have a great system in the ride, great headphones or lovely surround sound

One movie that shocked me with the FX and music is Iron Man (use it for showing off the Man Cave) The part where he is escaping the jets in 5.1 (or 7.1) is mind blowing!

Edit: for F/X this part is GOLDEN

One more thing to add to the discussion, when you get into REAL mastering, it includes the physical LOCATION of audio. This isn’t as prevalent in our music, but a well mastered rock track, if you are in a car with a good sound stage or at the optimal distance (8 feet) from a good quality stero source - you can actually draw a ‘stage’ and physically place WHERE each person is. The main vocalist always falls in the middle, drummer always falls in the rear, but the other instruments sorta shift around. While its never drastic, in a good master you can distinguish them all. Again that doesn’t usually qualify for hiphop - as even the Roots are a drum and vocal heavy set, but even with just those two ‘instruments’ - you should be able to hear the vocals ‘upfront’ and the drums ‘in the rear’.
EDIT - location is not the same thing as actually hearing the speakers…if you can hear sound from a particular speaker, then your sound system aint hot

And no it is NOT as simple as doing stereo effects.

Hell I was talking about the Lupe joint and my issue with his voice. Anytime I’m doing a master (not the final master, but the clean up portion before final mixdown and final master) - I actually look at the frequency range of the vocals, where it is high etc. I then take that range on the instrumentation side and compress it - not adjust the volume, but compress - if done correctly - you don’t notice any dip in volume, but you don’t get the ‘ear piercing’ effect some artist (such as Lupe) create when rhyming over the ‘wrong’ kind of beats. And yes its a nightmare on posse cuts to do right - striking a balance between compression and levels.

And its not ‘hard’ to do, but it requires experience to do well. A good master can completely transform an effort. Look at Lil B, his mixtapes SOUND like complete ass (not getting into the bias of the artist themselves - but the actual SQ) - then comapre that to his album…its a whole different sound, not because he did anything special, but it was actually run thru the system and cleaned up. He doesn’t post much in this thread anymore but I know Warpticon has experience on this front as well…

this pretty much goes for any exercise tape routine, it works as long as you’re willing to do it everyday. my ex and a friend of mine (both girls) use both of those and they’re in pretty good shape.

I need this album, his last joint was so dope.

Yo good lookin to Koop, Unreal and all the other cats about the info on mastering. When I work on my mixes I can only do so much mastering (with what I have) But I can appreciate quality music (crisp sound, clear drum kicks/snares). I have a long way to go to reach what I want with music (DJ and eventually production).

Do you use Audacity? Has some lightweight tools I use to “mix and master” my mixes (free also)

since ya’ll are talkin’ about mastering, would you say cam’s music is mastered(like War)? it sounds pretty clean to me, when compared to stuff like the blu track posted earlier.

hahah I love this video. This baby is awesome.

@Ace good looks,I just record in Audacity.i’ll check that out.

@Sambo,thats good.Smif N Wessun’s Monumental album is a example of a album that needs better mastering ASAP

Big Pooh from LB’s new solo is dope, that LB breakup was prob one of the best things to happen.Pooh messed around and dropped a ill album…Wish Bone might do the same

I use it sometimes, but I record at my friends house and he uses sound forge, and sometimes audio mulch.

DJ Paul is keepin it true to the sound… except for the dubstep drop at the end (which actually kinda rocks)
