The Rap Thread: News, Reviews, Rants, Opinions Vol 8 - We still don't know bout Wu-Tang

Yeah the local ‘Y’ is next door to the Barbershop (well Food Lion is a YMCA now hahaha)

Part of me is salty this guy beat me to the song…but I’m still going to finish mine…mine is a bit more wide spread in topic and issues than his…

 • :bluu:

helped you with that sir…

“…an i come to find out after sitting an writing I am being put before Kool G rap an Kane!! I knew mine an craig g verse would be forgotten” - Masta Ace on recording of the symphony at marley marls house…

A DJ Mellow V classic,The Valentine’s Day Mix… at me putting Gibbs “Slangin Rocks” on there

i did insanity for a few weeks over the summer, it definitely works. its not so much the workout thats helping tho, its more of having a constant routine and not slipping out of it.

yea, undun is ok. I’d rather go back to How I Got Over tho.

listenin’ to Hell Rell’s The Black Cloud right now, so far it’s pretty good imo. ton of freestyles but Rell does his job so I aint mad. got B.o.B’s EPIC comin’ up next. iirc I heard strange clouds on the radio last night(?). there’s some good features on this thing (KRIT & Bun B in particular).

BoB’s EPIC is prolly the best mixtape out right now. While the pop stuff is skip-button worthy, when he decides to actually rhyme, great things happen. Bun B does his thing on his song, but its not a stand out verse. Same for KRIT. I am ironically in love with “strange Clouds” the other track that gets me hard is the ‘Boom Bap’ join with Mos & TI. I never really pictured TI spittin like that…and Mos did his thing as well.

I’m still disappointed with Serious Jones’s mixtape…he’s so fuggin talented, but the lane he’s driving in is so over saturated I can’t stand listening to it. ITs as generic sounding as you can get. I mean I don’t want him to Lupe or something, he can still sorta play that street role, but cut out the tough talk, tough talk in today’s league makes you sound like Blackchild…weedcarrier/security…not the emcee himself. (Drake sounds like the chauffer OH!)

And that Lupe is trash. Ya’ll said thats how LASERS sounded? I’m so glad I didn’t buy that then. ugh. I’m all for experiementing or going in a different direction, but his voice mixed with that style of production is just ANNOYING. His vocal range is way too high to work on tracks with instruments in the same range. “Superstar” pushes his audible range, homey needs to stick to drum heavy tracks. Its not even about his skill/lyrics/charisma, I’m just looking at the final product, he needs a new executive producer and some ‘No’ men on his team.

@Unreal, thanks for the rec. copped an Asus on cyber monday.

undun has maybe one skippable track (sleep) to me. HIGO had a few. undun is near flawless. and with Rich putting everyone in check, there’s no cringe worthy lines. no “i’m from the city…” lol.

i listened to Lupe once and deleted it. smh at him rhyming on love supreme. he’s on nas status, dumb rapper who think he’s smart.

for iphone heads, there’s a free undun app

I saw that blu track yesterday, I like it. too bad his NoYork! album wasn’t more along that type of style. had to delete that pos after 5-10 mins of “wtf is this”

anybody listen to Los? the dude from Baltimore (i think). he put out a new tape The Crown Aint Safe. there’s a track called Make me Proud with DMX on it. afaik it’s a new verse. might be worth a listen if you’re checkin’ for present day X.

I saw it on Datpiff, but he’s on the ‘who is this dude’ status so I didn’t bother DLing…I just noticed you didn’t actually mention Los and basically said to DL it if your looking for X haha

So I’ve been studying these dudes for a couple weeks now and I finally decided to look up the lyrics, since back in the day NO ONE got hte lyrics right…even on the internet. They are prtty legit lyrics now on OHHLA so far, though I’m a little confused with some of their lingo…or let me not say I’m confused, but I’m curious if they are saying what I think they are saying - it sounds - especailly on their first album that they were crippin in short. True/False? All this Rip/Ripsta talk and the multiple times each track each artist said something about dragging them bloody bodies thru the mud.

I also have a whole new level of appreciation for “Creep’in on the Come Up” (the song), its easily the best story telling on that album. Still not Down 71, but the visuals - especially Layzie - were pretty damn good.

Whats irking me though - I’ve been studying them because I’ve been trying to integrate chopping into my technique a bit - my original style was fast, I got away from it, but now want ot go back in the direction, but with a better focus than just ‘cramming’, and their ‘chopping’ is “making shit fit”, like the over unannunciate constanents to make them sound like they go together. It ‘sounds’ tight, but digging deeper its a let down.

And was Flesh’s second name ‘Sin’?

My father and Kzoh’s dad need a Youtube channel. My dad is 64 and has alot of stories about his life and especially about the DMV. Lot of things I wondered about this area and he told me some of the facts about it. And his take on women and white people will have you  to :wow: to :wtf:. :looney:

tell me this why is mastering so horrible in “underground rap” now?Dom Kennedy’s last mixtape was dope but that mastering on there had me ready to scream.Ghostface’s Apollo Kids was the same way…now Blu just dropped a dope joint with Pete Rock and the mastering is terrible.Idk if its cats with the new technology and they get so geeked off of their joint being hot and they just want to throw it out there or just laziness.Times like this I wish Dre/Quik would master EVERYTHING.Dudes is slacking b:

new Blu

Cost. Technology.

Getting a pro to od it cost loot.
Your homie doing it on his computer is cheap.

You get what you pay for typically. Same goes for the studio as well. The one thing that irks me about Sparta is the mic-ing…sounds like it was done in someone’s bedroom sometimes.

 • :bluu:

I never knew how much a bad master can ruin a good joint.I never really paid that much attention to it until I started making tapes and ppl pointing out to me that its too loud or low. I remember I used to think 04 mixtape quality were better than official albums cuz the mixtapes sounded LOUD.Things done changed…anyone hyped for that new Naughty By Nature cd?

Kinda bummed Feelin’ Breezy didn’t make it on there,u can hear it in the background in this video Funk Flex VoiceFeelin’ Breezy was the illest joint!:

Mastering is more than just volume though, it includes balancing the highs and lows, the richness, etc.

There is ‘some’ overlap with mixing - but mixing is more heavy on the levels and stylings.

 • :bluu:

an let alone the COST… an finding someone that CAN master an not confuse it for a mix down.
