The Raging Storm 2009 Planning Thread: PHX: June 19-21st, 2009

Yo Geese whats good mane! Still on your grind with promoting SNK! Thats whats up.
I’ve only skimmed through this thread but your plans for a SNK major sounds tight as hell and my friend I play in KOF would be all for something like this.

Honorable mention definetly go out to KOF UM 98 simply because its 98. UM 2002 because of its upgrade to an already popular classic 2002 and king of fighters 12. Its no secret that I really despise King of Fighters XI and for my own personal reasons but it seems to be so popular here in the states but kof 12 should replace that game indefinatly but eh I suppose thats like telling third strike players they should stop playing they’re game for SF4. Unlikely yes I know.

I’ve been playing KOF (mainly 98) so hard for the last couple of months and I take it as serious as I do Super Turbo. SF 4 still isn’t appealing to me atm and not enough to make me travel so far to play it at cf lol. I cant wait to play UM next month since all of my friends that had UM 98 for the last year or so flaked on me

Anyway again good shit and as i always say keep that shit up!

Shiki whats good man!!!

SNK ALL DAY!!!

True there is a bad list of faults in the otherwise wonderful game design, so the judges would have to be on top of it … and yes this would be the place to start it off. Good luck!!

Thanks JeRon, I will keep all this in mind as I go forward with my plans. It’s good to see you around, I hope you make it, because I’m trying to even get top notch KOF comp in all the games at the SNK Major.

Okay guys I am talking to NeoPenny right now (The resident El Paso/Juarez SNK Expert) and it looks like I am editing the list for now…

Major updates!!!

The Major SNK Games have been expanded:

1. KOF 2002 Neo Geo: $10 (Run by Lecter and NeoPenny their rules with pools, Single Elim)
2. KOF 2002 UM: $10
3. KOF 98 UM: $10
4. KOF XII: FREE FREE FREE!! DID I SAY FREE? You’ve gotta pay Registration though!!
5. KOFXI: $10
6. SFIV: $10

  1. NeoPenny is on staff as the Resident El Paso/Juarez Expert.

  2. NeoPenny makes a great point guys…we do not know how 2002UM is gonna turn out…so we need our ace in the hole…and that ace in the hole…

Is 2002 Neo Geo. (Esp considering the location.)

  1. I’ll be setting up a Paypal account for Pre regs.

  2. For the Majors (Except SFIV, 2002 NG, KOFXII) there must be at least 15 players signed up to still run the tournament.

  3. 2002 NG will happen before 2002 UM. What we will do is that the top four in 2002 NG (if 2002 UM does not have at least 15 entrants) they will all be shuffled randomly and play each other for money in 2002 UM …this will be a special event if 2002 UM does not draw enough.

  4. 2002 NG, SFIV, KOFXII will get run as tournaments regardless of how many people sign up for them.

  5. This will be a three day event. Why? Friday can be casual/Come play KOFXII, BlazBlue etc day while we make sure everything is setup…

  6. Its POSSIBLE we could get Hugo (Widely known KOF2002 Mexican player) to this event according to NeoPenny…he is going to try.(no promises but he’s trying)

Special thanks to NeoPenny for the awesome ideas and great logic behind all of this.

You are right this would be the place.

Return of Shiki,

I think that more “Old School gamers” are going to be signing up for the SNK games and they are going to expect the SNK games to be played on the Neo… I honestly don’t think that there is a lot of “new blood” playing MOTW, SS2 and many other SNK games that never had a proper US release on the PS2, DC or any other system… I don’t think it would be right to alienate the “old school gamers”. SNK’s heyday was the Neo… it’s only right to play those games on the neo for the “SNK/P Major”.

It’s not going to be that hard to come up with enough gear to play the SNK games on the Neo home system and the MVS. I think Sazae and myself alone could come up with 3-4 set ups and I have the ability to get two more AES set ups with little to no problem.

the controller thing is a whole other ball game… it’s just as unfair to ask people who don’t have a neo stick or a converter to suffer and play on a neo stick as it is the “old School” games to pick up a PS2 stick, mod their Neo stick or come up with a converter… either way someone is going to be pissed…

Another update… Okay KOFXII will be a FREE TOURNAMENT…By paying Registration (updated to $15) you pay your way into the KOFXII tournament that will be very fast and you are allowed to play KOFXII…but there will be a 5 game streak limit on KOFXII for casuals…

what

they’re like the exact same game except with the addition of Saizo, who’s still not as good as Sho. Would be a waste of time to run both…

Well I can appreciate your point of view, but I believe you’re wrong on a lot of accounts.

First of all, as I said I’m not trying to push the old school out of the way. Both sides need to work together to make the scene work.

You’re wrong that a lot of “new blood” aren’t interested in Garou, etc. I myself never played the game in the arcades, much less the Neo-Geo. The vast majority of my experience with Garou is from the US DC version.
What you and the “old-school” need to realize is that now the group of “arcade-only old players” is the minority now, but there’s a completely new generation of tournament players right now that have NEVER played in the arcades. There are even SNK fans who never even played a NeoGeo game in the arcades in their lives. I’m one of them (I think I only dabbled a TINY bit in SS4 and KOF 2000).
These players are the future, and with KOF XII hopefully creating more interest, this faction is only going to get bigger.

Think about it…if there was REALLY such a demand at US tournaments for SNK tournaments played only the “real” Neo-Geo’s, why aren’t people playing them at tournaments? Why has the offline scene been completely virtually non-existent in the US for the past** 20 years**?
To quote Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park: “The dinosaurs had their shot, and nature selected them for extinction!”

Your only argument is the “Neo-Geo is the tradition”…a tradition held by a TINY group of people in the US.

Sigh
The lack of Neo-Geo hardware is NOT the issue.
The issue is PS2 AND PS3 ARE THE TOURNAMENT STANDARDS IN THE US, PERIOD.

Yes, but should it be the 0.1% of the people who want to use Neo-Geo sticks only or should it be the 99.9% of tournament players in the US that prefer to use their own PS2 sticks/pads?

so it’s ok to play SNK games on MVS and AES at FRXII but not at the SNK major?

Actually, I don’t think it makes any sense at FR. If I had a say, I would want no SNK tournaments run on Neo-Geo hardware at FR, but FR isn’t my tournament, so…meh.

Now, I do realize that the base of the scene which is required to make an event like this work is indeed the Mexican players and the Neo-Geo collectors.
Somebody who dabbles in Garou online now and then or just bought KOF XI for $10 at Best Buy isn’t going to be spending hundreds of dollars to fly to Texas and stay a weekend.

Take for example, if this tournament was held this very weekend in El Paso. It would make no sense to promote NGBC or whatever. The main game would have to be KOF 2002. In fact, it would probably be the ONLY game. It would also make no sense whatsoever to have it played on PS2. The PS2 version of 2002 has serious control issues, and 99% of the players there would be Mexicans who’ve only played the game in the arcade anyway.

Now, I actually personally wouldn’t mind seeing DG and a small band of MVS and AES hardware and KOF 2002 DWARF the amount of entries of any single game held at EVO this year.
Could it actually happen? Definitely.
Would it make a profit? Probably.
Would it be a nice slap in the face of American players who think the whole country is ruled solely by 3rd Strike and SoCal Capcom players? Maybe, if they’re paying attention.

But here’s my problem with such a set-up: I wouldn’t personally want to go to it.
I’m not just talking about spending $100’s to fly to Texas, I mean I wouldn’t drive 1 hour to a tournament which had 200 Mexicans playing KOF 2002 and little else.

However, more importantly, here’s the biggest problem with such a set-up: it wouldn’t change anything.
Getting 200 Mexicans to cross the border and play KOF 2002 would be the biggest SNK tournament on US soil in history but to everyone else it would be…Tuesday. Or any other day.

So yes, you can run tournaments with 200 Mexicans playing KOF 2002 on Neo-Geo’s (and maybe 5 people playing Garou, KOF XI, or KOF 98 UM) and make even a tiny profit. You could get away with doing it for years to come.
But the US SNK scene wouldn’t grow at all and no one will pay attention.
In the end, only KOF XII can make anything SNK relevant. And if it does actually get new US players interested in SNK, you can bet they’re not going to want to play 15 year old games on a 20+ year old arcade system.

But what I want to make clear (and I’m repeating myself) is that I’m NOT saying getting rid of all NeoGeos from the event. That would just be stupid.

But use those NeoGeos solely for the games that REALLY need them (SSVSp, original 2002, Last Blade 2). In all other situations, anything that could be run on PS2, SHOULD be run on PS2.

Thats actually not irony.

Anyway, good luck with your event! Sounds cool.

KoF12 has a very good chance at being in Evo if it comes in time, mind you.

LOL well I found it to be irony. Thanks Adam for the good luck. Main thing I am worrying about right now is just how much the KOFXII arcade cab is gonna cost since I’ve heard of $28,000 thrown around for SF4 and quite frankly that’s just too much money…Thats a damn student loan…a brand new car…lol.

I hope KOFXII has a good chance of being at EVO…I really do…

Its not irony. Its just you ‘returning the favor’. It would be ironic if suddenly the SNK Major was pulling Evo numbers, while Evo was suddenly pulling SNK side tournament numbers.

that figure is more like $16k for 2 head-to-head cabs + shipping = less than $20k
or around $6-7k for SFIV kits.

i’m going to make a safe estimate and say the KOF 12 cab will be at least $5K (wouldn’t be surprised if it were higher). you have some very generous sponsors if they’re going to spot you a KOF 12 cab or two. good luck on obtaining one; it’ll definitely make for the main draw for your tourney if it hits in time.

You know what…you’re right…I like that POV.

Also I been thinking and here is something to ponder everyone-

It really didnt take 98UM that long for it to hit consoles after it hit the arcades…

So in truth lets think about it…if KOFXII hits arcades in April 2009 (JPN)…it COULD be out on consoles (JPN) by July 2009… (Thats 2-3 months)

Im not saying that will happen, im just saying that you should use the word ‘ironic’ correctly. :-p

Well I’ll leave it to you to keep me in check Adam…you’re good at that lol. :looney: (Esp my Jack in WHP lol)

Thai- I can deal with $5,000. I can bust my ass to make up the difference between that and what they are willing to give me. I mean you all know how business proposals work…like Webster says…its about numbers…they wanna see how its gonna do good for them…so I’m getting my whole act together…like a package with the hotel in El Paso and everything…

And you all will know it very soon…I’ve just been very busy getting a hold of the people I need to try and make this an international monster…If not then KOFXII will be the main draw at the 2nd tourney I do in Dallas/wherever.

-DG

…being realistic here, but I highly doubt that would happen, since that would burn the arcade owners who bought the expensive machines.

that’s too soon. you can always try to shoot for the second SNK event you’re having to expect it to hit consoles.

EDIT
cool, you thought the same thing that i did about KOF 12 hitting consoles…

Here’s the way I look at it.

  1. Just because one community calls something standard, doesn’t mean everyone has to follow suit. However, you should have a good reason to go against the standard- such as the PS3 port being inferior, or the userbase being mostly on 360. For UM, 360 could be standard if enough US people are playing on there- and that game is NOT going to get a PS3 port.

While the tourney may be Mexicans mostly showing up, it would be a US tourney- and so should cater to US players. While I won’t do any traveling for tournies this year, next year I plan to hit one as my last one, and a Sendo-style beatdown tour of Mexico would be a nice way to end things, but I don’t think I’m strong enough to do that.

Given that it’s not hard to get 360 or PS3 controls that are good for fighters in a month- and MVS/AES stuff is rare as hell- you should move to newer consoles.

In all honesty, I dont think this will work. I mean, People have enough trouble getting one of the kof’s into evo, With the exception that XII MIGHT be at next evo, How exactly would this work in your case? Granted you’re around the DFW area, But there arent as many mexicans there as you think…Especially in denton, Its mostly laos people.

Yeah it’s just a possibility, and I am prepared for promoting it the 2nd time around in the Dallas area or wherever we settle for the bi annual location around Oct/Nov or what time there is NOT a big major going on or something close (I gotta be sure not to knock heads on other tournament organizers, we all gotta come to an understanding)

Well as I said on AIM during our convo, you are very much welcome to put everything in your “current situation” behind you and come on out to my SNK Major.

Oh I know there’s not, the sacrifice with one of these areas to me like I say to people is that we are sacrificing level of play for accessibility. From what I have been following, most agree the level of play is very very important, thus El Paso is a given and people follow me on that. I mean either way though see the El Paso tourney is just gonna be the first one, I look at it like my first time when I went to EVO East, I still wanna make it the best I can, with KOFXII or without it I am still gonna try to do things…and if no KOFXII I wanna have enough flashy events on the SNK side to at least try to shoulder some of the weight…

Me and Gual are gonna try to start up a scene when 2002UM hits in Denton in regards to the other Mexican players…this was an idea he was telling me about…

Also everyone I will be doing another youtube episode soon talking about the Majors to promote…and I will be doing something tonite with UnholyKnight on his interview going on tonite so stay tuned!!! (Every Monday night around 8 PM CST)
