Actually, I don’t think it makes any sense at FR. If I had a say, I would want no SNK tournaments run on Neo-Geo hardware at FR, but FR isn’t my tournament, so…meh.
Now, I do realize that the base of the scene which is required to make an event like this work is indeed the Mexican players and the Neo-Geo collectors.
Somebody who dabbles in Garou online now and then or just bought KOF XI for $10 at Best Buy isn’t going to be spending hundreds of dollars to fly to Texas and stay a weekend.
Take for example, if this tournament was held this very weekend in El Paso. It would make no sense to promote NGBC or whatever. The main game would have to be KOF 2002. In fact, it would probably be the ONLY game. It would also make no sense whatsoever to have it played on PS2. The PS2 version of 2002 has serious control issues, and 99% of the players there would be Mexicans who’ve only played the game in the arcade anyway.
Now, I actually personally wouldn’t mind seeing DG and a small band of MVS and AES hardware and KOF 2002 DWARF the amount of entries of any single game held at EVO this year.
Could it actually happen? Definitely.
Would it make a profit? Probably.
Would it be a nice slap in the face of American players who think the whole country is ruled solely by 3rd Strike and SoCal Capcom players? Maybe, if they’re paying attention.
But here’s my problem with such a set-up: I wouldn’t personally want to go to it.
I’m not just talking about spending $100’s to fly to Texas, I mean I wouldn’t drive 1 hour to a tournament which had 200 Mexicans playing KOF 2002 and little else.
However, more importantly, here’s the biggest problem with such a set-up: it wouldn’t change anything.
Getting 200 Mexicans to cross the border and play KOF 2002 would be the biggest SNK tournament on US soil in history but to everyone else it would be…Tuesday. Or any other day.
So yes, you can run tournaments with 200 Mexicans playing KOF 2002 on Neo-Geo’s (and maybe 5 people playing Garou, KOF XI, or KOF 98 UM) and make even a tiny profit. You could get away with doing it for years to come.
But the US SNK scene wouldn’t grow at all and no one will pay attention.
In the end, only KOF XII can make anything SNK relevant. And if it does actually get new US players interested in SNK, you can bet they’re not going to want to play 15 year old games on a 20+ year old arcade system.
But what I want to make clear (and I’m repeating myself) is that I’m NOT saying getting rid of all NeoGeos from the event. That would just be stupid.
But use those NeoGeos solely for the games that REALLY need them (SSVSp, original 2002, Last Blade 2). In all other situations, anything that could be run on PS2, SHOULD be run on PS2.
