The Raging Storm 2009 Planning Thread: PHX: June 19-21st, 2009

That’s the same time as fubar’s tourney. You could kill 2 birds with one stone and have the tourney there, or is that your intention?

A possible venue for the Dallas tourney: The Ft. Worth Convention Center. I’ll have to rescout it out since I’ve lost all of the most pertaint data about the place, but I think that I can get you the info in a timely manner.

Just a suggestion.

We can still do that… and thats been talk circulating between me and Spooky pre me getting the 6 month ban  …due to that we have changed the date to **July 17-19th. **We aint changing it again. Thanks for the lookout PBJ Mixxa!

I’ll look into that.

Welcome back Dark Geese.

I know for VF, you’ll need VFDC support if you want anyone to show up.

Sup DG!! Im here for the obligitory i STILL like KOFNW post. Oh and some Breakers too. That game is pretty fun.

Thanks!

Thanks I’ll look into that Arstal.

Sup Lilman!!

I still like KOFNW, but KOF2002UM has killed it…so thats the next big hype…

Hope this does well. Make sure you don’t overload the game list, especially ones that will get a low turnout. Use tournament maker, and have enough resources for the tournaments. I think this has a lot of potential to do well, as long as you plan for the best, and expect any unforseen mishaps.

I’m curious… who is this sponsor, and why would you want to have this in two locations?

Delly: If you come to this, there needs to be some sort of side TSS tournament or match between me and you vs. Texas. I hear Texas has some good TSS players, I’d like to see how MN does against them.

This tournament sounds dope, will try to attend it once more details are ironed out. Breakers!!!

DG welcome back. How do you feel about recruiting some entertainment for the Majors like I found these guys:

If Breakers is there I hope its vanilla and not revenge or at least you run both

You can pretty much guaranty that if I’m able to make it the TSS home cart will be coming with me… many months of friendly trash talking between me and a few n-g.com members from Texas will have a pastel throw down of epic proportions!!!

I hear yah on that… see let me let you in on a secret that no one talks about see-

As I’ve told Webster…I feel like I’ve put my hard earned time busting my ass trying to do everything at these other tournaments myself…you know what I mean? When I want dedicated staff to help me out at these Majors run these SNK tournaments and stuff what happens is I end up running all these tournaments…

So enough of that…it’s like most of these people suggest but then bail…

So that’s not happening again…I am not going to be the one running all these tournaments…Between me and my staff of dedicated people we are going to get all this done…thus my staff will keep increasing…I will find something for everyone to do to keep us all busy. I have learned to not trust people to help you out…not at someone elses event…I have only had a few I could depend on like Noc, Giby, Webs, Dash No Chris and others that have stepped in from time to time…

I need a staff. I’m not putting everything on me…I’m not chasing people around (megaphone now) and I got white boards for everything…So when I write up what’s going on you will know in advance whats happening. On top of this my laptop is perfect for match vids now…it records background noise and everything else…

Here are sample matches and trainers illustrating that:

KOFXI Matches/Casuals in December between me Gualberto, Eddy:

I have two sponsors actually… LDA Inc. and Hardcore Computers being the ones right now fully supporting this thing paying for it in full for me…

Two locations? Well Dallas/Houston or another area in the US would be another opportunity to get to those that can’t make it down South…with the KOFXII arcade cab… u follow me? :wgrin:

I hope so dude…I’m up for that and trying to get out some SSVSP etc possibly…

I’m down for that entertainment and musical atmosphere stuff etc…I am gonna need someone good with programming and stuff because I want to start everything with a BANG…I mean I want the fireworks for it even the first time…so I’m out promoting like a madman, even trying to get people like Esteban to come over from Juarez etc…I want this to be a kick ass event…

DJ- Let me know so I can set this up! TSS matches!

Alright after reading this thread and the tournament thread, I’ll give my $.50 on the situation. I’m NOT claiming to be 100% right and a lot of stuff might be randomly pulled out of my ass but here are my thoughts:

See this is the kind of thing that really pisses me off about the “community”.

Old (SNK) Vs. “New”(SNKP)

Here is the main problem that keeps the US community divided here. The schism between the old school who paid $700 for a Neo-Geo and remembers playing the games in the arcades in the mid 90’s and the new school who, uh, didn’t.
Thing is, the SNK community is too small and unorganized to push one away completely for the sake of the other.
If the event is supposed to be THE SNK event, then both sides need to be adequately represented.
Unfortunately, tournament directors can only afford to be pragmatists and thus realize that if you try to please too many people, you end up pleasing no one.

That said, THERE IS NO REASON NOT TO HAVE ANY TOURNAMENTS ON THE COMMUNITY STANDARD PLATFORMS UNLESS IT IS COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE OR NOT VIABLE FOR TOURNAMENT PLAY*
*(Which as of 2009, is only PS2 and PS3)
Therefore, if it is available for PS2 or PS3, then for tournaments it needs to be played only on PS2 or PS3 unless there is something completely wrong with the PS2 version (MvC2 or Last Blade 2, for example).
In the year 2009, it is completely unviable to run a 50-100 man tournament on 1 or 2 arcade cabs.
And even without the tournament size issues, there is no reason to force people to use Neo-Geo sticks or laggy converters when just about everyone in the community has and prefers to use their own PS2 sticks/pads. Especially when people are out there spending $100+ to mod and customize their own sticks.
Unless it’s completely impossible (SSVSp) or unviable (Last Blade 2), do PS2 or PS3 or don’t bother.

I’m not saying get rid of all of the Neo-Geo’s or anything. If the place is big enough, set up a small side section full of Neo’s/ArcadeCabs with stuff like Metal Slug, Windjammers, etc. on free casual play the whole weekend like conventions do. But consoles need to be tournament standard.

LOCATION

This is dependant on what your expectations and goals for your tournament (especially for your 1st) are.
If you’re looking for a lot of Mexican comp and Mexican level play, then El Paso.
If you’re looking to make the event more attractive for getting US or non-Mexican international players involved, then Dallas.
Dallas would be a hell of lot easier for people from out-of-state/Japan/Canada to reach via plane. On the other hand, you might risk losing turnout from the Mexicans. Maybe you can do El Paso first, then Dallas.
So I don’t personally know. I think eventually if SNK is going to mean anything in the US you have to take a risk sooner or later but then again it’s not my money and reputation on the line so I can’t blame anyone for going a guaranteed route.
Outside of Texas, I think your only viable locations are SoCal and Florida.
I would say NY if you could convert the FOBs, but holding an actual event there and getting people to travel through the city would be hard for out-of-towners.
If you do like EVO East did, and hold it a little outside the city in Connecticut, you’d probably lose the FOBs.

TIME

Agree with Tarkan 100% that it needs to be 2 days at most, not 3. Most people won’t have the time and energy to stay there the whole 3 days. There’s no reason why we wouldn’t be able to fit enough SNK stuff there in 2 days, if SNK is the main focus of the event.
Holding it the Summer should be fine, I guess, as long as it’s not too close to EVO.

GAMES

Most people won’t agree with me, but I think if it’s *THE *SNK event then there is no reason to exclude any decent SNK game with any kind of significant following.
Not if it’s two whole days and you have a dozen or more TVs/stations.

I’m not saying to go overboard and dilute the gameslist, however.
Also, it’s time to burn some deadwood and clear out a lot of obsolete stuff.
Neowave, for example, since it’s a “fixed” version of 2002 and 2002 UM is going to be out.
SamSho 1 doesn’t need to be played ever again. There is no reason to have World Heroes 2 when WH Perfect is better in every possible way. Terrible KOFs like 2001 just need to go away, period.
I know people have said it a lot in the past, DG, but at a major event you seriously need to sacrifice quite a few games like these.

Also, while it does make sense to promote your top 3 to be 98 UM, 2002 UM, and XI/XII I just hope KOF doesn’t take absolute precedence over everything else. It is after all the “SNK” event.
As such, there is no reason why SamSho players should have to choose between 2, 5Sp, and Tenka. All 3 games are good, unique enough, and have enough a following to be played as official tournaments (though not main events).
I think, of course, the KOFs will be the big draw but if you can’t play NGBC, WHP, Garou, Real Bout 2, Tenka, etc. at THE SNK event then where CAN you play them?
Also, the 3 main event games NEED to be at least $10, not $5. First of all, people aren’t going to take a main event game seriously for just $5/entry. Secondly, for the main event games you want to cut down on dabblers if you really want to present high-level tournament play. Thirdly, the best players aren’t going to be enticed to enter the main events without a huge pot. Especially not the Japanese, even they are sponsored and have their travel paid for.

About other non-SNK stuff…I agree it makes sense but only to a point. First of all, games like 3S, GG, and Soul Calibur are too big and popular to be just side tournaments and would take away too much from the SNK focus.
Blazblue is a good idea if you can get some cabs, because they will be fairly rare in the US and would draw people.
SF4, I’m not really sure. I guess you have to give a little incentive to people on the fence about SNK.
Teaming with the VF community as a group therapy effort? I guess.
Any non-SNK major game needs to be held on Sunday, not Saturday, that way most of the SNK stuff can be given full focus on the 1st day, and on the 2nd day when attendence drops off, the minority of people who would be drawn just for SF4, HDRemix, etc. come in on Sunday to replace them.

I gotta say dude, I agree with you posts. Especially the location and the obsolete game thing. Me, for example (and I know I’m not a majority or anything) could never even hope to make it to El Paso for this thing. Hell even getting to see DG at FI or whatever is hard for me.

Fully agree about the SC, 3S, etc. games. Those games are tried and true just about everywhere…well maybe not GGXX anymore; its starting to die a little.

Finally, getting VF competition in there is a big plus.

Good points Shiki, this is why I have this thread here and we are talking about this now, because though July is a ways away, I wanna solidify stuff as soon as possible.

**Standardization: **I agree about the standardization, I also agree about having variety as well. I have been thinking alot since being away from SRK, and it’s funny how these fools on here claim to know me when I last posted on July 2008. I am damn near 27 years old now, I have changed quite a bit since being away from SRK (that goes for you too valaris and others), you all need to be careful about being quick to judge how you think I am going to react. (Just speaking in general)

Now onto the first part about the standardization, I will consider all things possible about that, esp. when putting together my entire plan of overhead I will deliver to my sponsors…so I can see what is the best way to do this. Not everyone is going to be happy, that’s fine by me.

Location: This is another reason for having two Majors…one in Dallas or another part of the US for the reasons you said…and the one in El Paso for high level competition. There’s one airport in El Paso I believe (El Paso International). El Paso brings the competition at a high level…

Time: I’ll consider the two days thing, once everything is figured out like clockwork (That’s how I am going to want it) I will be able to give a definite in regards to how many days we are going to do things. My dad is perfect at making things run like clockwork and I am consulting him also to help make sure everything is perfectly ran no exceptions.

Games: This goes back to my first post, I think differently in this aspect. Those KOF’s are the main event because I know they will draw the most crowd, esp due to the location (El Paso). However, with that being said as far as the non major games are concerned, I agree with you 100%, there is no reason people should have to choose at the SNK Major…so I’m with you…I’m not really making them choose unless there is a clearly superior version of the game everyone agrees on…I am going to supply enough Tvs so that we don’t have to debate between RB2, SSVSP, SST, SS2, RBS etc…

I’m with you 100% on that, I agree with you on that…there SHOULD be more SNK games than the others because well…this is THE SNK event!

About the obscure games etc…what you all have to understand was in truth all that was was a testing ground for what I am doing now, all that combined from being away from this biased ass site  has helped me tremendously in regards to planning the SNK Major.

What I want to see- Here’s the thing I want though from the community- COMMITMENT. Lets say that again-COMMITMENT. I can set up the games you wanna play…but will you be there???

That’s the catch see… That’s the fine line I must walk.

Entry fee has been bumped to $10 for the Majors…

Non SNK Games: What do you suggest then Shiki? Remember the bottom line (business wise) is that the venue must pay for itself!!!

More suggestions please! Shiki would you be interested in coming and being part of the staff?

-DG

welcome back to srk lukas!! snk has been quiet here without you around.
i havent been playing snk due to me focusing on sf4 these months cause its too goodd, but i know when youre around i cant help but not to play something SNK.

If it is all possible I would say get a Blazblue cab. Maybe even two of them.
Charge people who want to play it a venue fee (for a badge), but set the 2 machines on Free Play for the whole weekend only for people with badges.
I know a lot of GG players would happily show up and chip in $20-25 a pop just to play unlimited Blazblue the whole weekend. Maybe people could even set up a side tournament, which would attract even more people.
I think collaborating with the Dustloop and VF communities, both of which have often been dissed by the mainstream, could bear fruit. Again, my only concern is if GG was made an official game and got too big and started to impede the other games. I think you could avoid that with a $20 tournament fee. Plus the top GG players would be really happy with the pot.

So,

-Blazblue (free play and possible side tournament…I’d say leave up to the Dustloop community to run it)
-GGAC ($20)
-SF4 or HD Remix
-Arcana Heart 2
-VF5

I’d say anything else non-SNK is excessive. Smash would help you pay for the venue fee but you’d have to deal with a whole bunch of extra headaches involving the community and no one who plays Smash is going to play any other game there.
SC4 is too big, no one will play anything else, blah blah.
I think it’s important that the non-SNK games featured are newer games and/or ones that you wouldn’t find support for at your typical mainstream tournament where the old Capcom games.

Thank you Arturo!!! I been wondering what my boy has been up to but I figured you been busy with something LOL. What do you think it would take to get some FOBS to my event Arturo? The pot money is gonna be there…KOFXII…is gonna be there…

And I just got a great idea from rogueyoshi…

There will be a 5 game in streak limit on casuals on the KOFXII machine lol.

Yeah I was thinking about that idea after seeing what EVO did with SF4 etc at EVO…thats a great idea…like I say the venue has to pay for itself! $20 tournament fee for Guilty Gear you think? or for BlazBlue? We got the connections of talking to the guy that did Frosty Faustings for the BlazBlue cab…but I dunno about getting the 2nd…we will see…

Webs- You see this he’s saying? Sazae etc? Whats your opinion on it all…I aint just “The SNK Head”…I am part of a team…I want us all on the same page!!!

Last Blade 2 gets no love!! When will people realize…

There is quite the ban list for Last Blade 2 that would make it hard to do an official tournament for…BUT with that said if someone wants to run a tournament for it at the SNK event…that’s the place to do it no???
