What are you guys using as your general opener from an air dash? I’m really trying to break the habit of defaulting to dash, Shell Kick ad nauseum.
After playing around with it a bit, I really like low altitude j.L, j.M. Timed right, the j.M actually looks like a crouching kick, and it transitions seamlessly into s.L for a quick high/low that’s pretty damn hard to see. Then from there I just go into staggered s.L/command throw, or flight cancel overheads. Anything I should be doing different? (aside from using an assist or soul fist for cover, as that’s a given.)
you can jump in with 3 lights in a row (2 will hit in air, the first as you land will be a low) you can jump in with an H, since it comes out quickly, the traditional air dash s. You can also just do a jump forward H, it surprisingly mixes people up enough, has a huge hitbox, can cross up. You can also fake your dash in (either unfly or dash low to the ground so your s won’t even hit them). From there you can fly+s (overhead) or start working in shadowblade pressure (shadowblade l, s to drop on their head) or shadowblade m, and keep pressure up. If theyre up backing a lot, go for an air throw, else just keep chuckin plasma
air dash H, fly S is really good for mixups.
I’m sure this is super old news, but I’ve never seen it on a stream so I’ll just throw it out there: after an air series, you can combo into Soul Drain via Shadow Servant.
X factor I assume?
Or do you mean shooting the soul drain first and then canceling it into the otg super?
The latter.
Yep, super old. lol
The timing seems impossible or super tight after a long soul flist loop combo. Very easy after MMHS style combo though.
I starting practicing rapidly chucking out fly/unfly Soul fist M on characters being rather close to Morrigan during the soul fist trap and I notice that it does a crazy amount of damage. Depending on how consistent you are you can chip out a full health Ironman(950k) if done from AV start to finish. You can probably do the same to Wesker but I’m inconsistent due to trying to learn how to use PS3’s D-pad (and currently dealing with blisters.)
If this seem like old news, I don’t even play that way. lol
whatever, with the lag and dumb shit in this game i’m going all out morrigan LAME game style. Funny thing is, I wanted to play her from launch in vanilla but i was always such ass that none of the characters I really wanted to play worked out (Thor, Cap, Iron Man, Zero)
I have had my best success in this game online recently with Morrigan, as opposed to my epic failure with Spiderman landing a single goddamn combo. When lag kicks in and wrecks my soul fist cancels during astral vision, i get pretty fucking pissed but at least its not as terrible as dropping every simple BnB
If im not using an OTG assist, should I just be ending my soul fist loop with launch > mmh xx dp xx FS ?
I find that the superjump soul fist loop nearly always corner carries.
Also, are there any other solo bnbs that do more than the soul fist loops ? and what is her best corner bnb ? thank you to whomever decides to answer all these questions lol
-
Usually it depends whether you want the kill or to keep applying pressure, most of the times I see no reason to end with super unless you fish the kill.
-
Not that I know, and the SF loop does around 100K more then her others bnb.
-
I’ve heard stuff about DPs loops, but I just use the usual SF loop.
I got some random questoins
I read about the OS cmmd grab\flight mode trick in the book. It seems fucking god like as a defensive reversal tool because its a 1f throw, does it not work well or something? I don’t see anyone use it. I practiced it for a bit and it doesn’t seem hard to do @ all.
are shoryukens good with her to stop pressure? they start up fast and allow her to go into flight mode. I think M srk is the best because it puts her @ the perfect height to air dash cancel away from pressure afterwards.
if I’m feeling pressured, is her flight mode into air dash cancels good to get away from shit? she seems like she can hang up there for a while and you can even adjust her angles
any good mixups for incoming characters? flooding the screen during AV as an incoming tool to get chip damage isn’t bad but I wan’t a mixup so I can kill off a hit.
morrigans best assist is the meter up assist, what do other players think?
best ways to activate AV solo?
-
I guess no one actually attacks you from the ground, plus there’s no link and almost no real frame traps, so one frame reversal might won’t do
one more think, although Morrigan didn’t whiff the throw, raw flight is still punishable. -
Seems legit, only need to take care not to get crossed up, since it may mass the fly input into world of pain.
-
SJ is probably the best way getting into air with her. after that airdashed/flight etc…
-
if you respect you, you can always wait for them to lend and then high/low with flight/A. Otherwise, just jump A B C assist SF and try to get a lock down.
Probably fly above and then dash down/backword and S can do some weird shit, but haven’t tested that. -
I guess it depends on your team, her other assist are pretty getho in their departments .
-
after combo, but anytime your opponents is dreaming.
idk, I really like her command grab. 1f command grab or 4f s.L that hits low seems pretty good. Although like Gefen said, flight is punishable as it does have some startup. Yay for assists!
As for why nobody uses the OS… I don’t know. I also don’t know why people love to mash c.L, but they do.
They don’t have any invincibility, but 3f startup and a nice hitbox are pretty damn good. I agree with using M version most of the time, but L can catch people off guard if you flight cancel right away, kind of like Spiderman’s Spider Sting + followup
I don’t see why not, as long as you’re in flight mode. Something that I didn’t know for the longest time is that if you enter flight mode, move in a direction for a bit, then air dash, Morrigan moves crazy fast.
And you’re probably already aware, but don’t ever dash backwards outside of flight mode. You can’t do anything for like half a second, except probably get killed.
I don’t have anything mindblowing, I usually just fire a Soul Fist, fly, call assist and dash > go for air throw. If you’ve got a low assist then you can go for an unblockable (I don’t know the setup, but I’m pretty sure JJJ does this)
It probably is; I can’t think of any character that does not benefit from having more meter. Soul Fist is like any other fireball assist. I’ve never found a use for a fireball assist, lol.
Shadow Blade gives you some interesting options, though. I use it for Dante, since it gives an invincible crossover counter (Dante has no reversal on his own besides his lvl3), combo extension (Shadow Blade causes a surprisingly large amount of hitstun, even late in a combo), and THC. Shadow Servant recovers way before Million Dollars does, which leaves enough time to fire a few Soul Drains off, and maybe combo afterwards.
Shadow Blade assist’s effectiveness varies based on team composition, but overall I’d say Dark Harmonizer is her best one.
I think that you can safely activate it off of a blocked fireball. At least, I’ve never seen it punished.
os cmmd grab is 1f startup and goes into an 11 frame flight mode that can get cancelled into s which is 5 frames. So your reversal attempt is 17f total. If you could space confirm her cmmd grab which does have awesome range to begin with, I think its a pretty decent option to use imo but 17f total for a move isn’t exactly ideal. I personally suck with it but there is no way a move like that is bad when used properly. Especially when morrigan’s main weakness is getting people out of her face. I’ll have to fuck with it some more. It seems like inputs can be mashed together somehow. So it may be possible to hcb, srk+h~s to trigger the 1f cmmd grab os trick and an srk attempt as one input. This would remove the 11frame startup off the flight mode and give you a 1f cmmd grab and then a 3 frame srk instead of an 11 frame flight mode. Of course its just a theory and I will have to jam on the input a bit to see if it can be broken
I like the srk thing as an alpha counter is pretty good, could probably do alpha counter shoryuken move, flight mode, H fireball combo out? I think that would be pretty beneficial because you can go into the TAC glitch for some fucked scenarios. Going to try that later
i’ve tested the ranges on fireballs being punished and if morrigan does say c.l, c.m, H fireball, AV, she can’t be punished with a free poke but she’s not allowed to move. It seems like its neutral or -1 so if you try to hold upbck, you can get tagged in the toes. Solo AV activations are key with her.
reversals on wake up dont exist in this game, you either throw out an invincible move, or you block.
reversal out of block stun or something is a different story.
btw, crouching L pretty much destroys all tri jump pressure that ive tried it against. makes the mag matchup TONS easier. plus it infuriates the mag player. and it combos straight to S, so if you have the relaunch combo down you can turn that into some big damage.
her srk super is good to stop pressure, but the normal srks are only consistent against characters with less than stellar jump ins. dont try to dp haggars pipe, or frying pan, or pizza cutter, or helm breaker. Ive traded at best with all of these, but its not worth the trade.
on incomers, I shoot an H fireball, and fly, if they get hit by it, i can just float up to them and hit with an S and than link into st. M for a full combo, if they block i stay low and try to time an S to hit them right as they hit the ground. that opens up the vast majority of people i fight.
I typically use meter assist so that I can just Nike out an invincible super whenever im in trouble. but if I feel like I can lame someone out with joe to the point where i dont need a get out of jail free card, ill run fireball assist. specific examples include Joe shooting upwards charged voomerangs while fireballs cover him directly in front against wesker.
I also pretty much have to use fireball assist when I play X-23 on point. I use my joe assist for combo extention. so i need to use something with morrigan to help me get in. plus, i created a bunch of reset set ups for my x 23 with the fireball.
activating AV solo? blockstun chain into dark quills? just thought of that just now on the fly.
When/Why are you meant to use flight cancelled shadow blades?
Always, and because it keeps you safe and lets you combo.
Pretty much what Kay said, anytime you want massive frame advantage on block, or a combo on hit, and are certain it won’t get stuffed. you can also use them like a double jump for off screen assist calls.
