Don’t look at me, I was insisting she was minimum B tier through out all of vanilla. the changes to both her and the game in general bump her to A tier now though in my opinion at least.
Also, she was hardly affected by the air dash nerf. Plus, she has players that use her effectively and frequently in the stream (Chris G, Dieminion, Omnisscythe). The community is now not sleeping on her, I guess - which is good. She did, however, cop some heat after Curleh Mustache for her soul fist spam.
I agree that the changes made to her weren’t large, however she did get several small improvements to the tools already available to her and that made all the difference. She is a much better version of her vanilla self, whilst other characters were no so fortunate.
I think her largest change was the lowered height restriction on her airdash making her mix-ups faster and more practical. If any of her changes made her more popular, I’m guessing it’s that.
Doubtful honestly. The single biggest reason constantly recited for her being “bad” in vanilla was “loldamage”. Generating a hit with her never really was an issue at all. Making that hit actually hurt was a big issue. I’d really attribute the flight start up and overall Soul Fist changes to be why people gave her another look.
Honestly that’s my reason for jumping aboard.
I’m happy you did too, because well, I suck ass at combos, period. You and a few of the other new posters here gave me tech to steal. Now, if only I could actually pick a third character.
Sorry for sorta re-posting this from the team thread (didn’t really get answered), but why does Vergil go well with Morrigan? I know someone answered me saying that Morrigan builds meter and Vergil uses meter, but I don’t know how true or good that is… I definitely want to take advantage of their teamwork, but I don’t actually know what it is.
Is it comparable to Morrigan and Doom’s teamwork?
I can copy paste my answer from there, but i guess you want something new…
You should check SMAOI2010 channel in youtube. quite a while ago (i guess one or two months back) there was an online tournament in japan. one of the finalists were Morrigan/?/Vergil (I actually can’t remember the 2nd, probably doom…). Dig in there a little bit, you should find some nice reference there for that kind of team.
To Helvetica:
Morrigan works really well with vergil in terms of DHCing. She’s also a really good meter character that feeds vergil’s meter hungry playstyle. In addition, she’s kind of the polar opposite of vergils mechanics, allowing for a diverse team (she’s played in the air, with some keepaway, and highlows, while vergil has very little air control, but plenty of left right)
In terms of DHC: if you have them in the corner with morrigan and do rocket -> TAC, there’s enough time to do a down H (helmet breaker) trick to the other side, then do the high time -> dimension slash, as they land you shadow servant and get full hits
If you have a character granting you OTG, such as wesker doom or x23, you can do a normal combo >soul drain> flight > shadowblade m> rockets dhc into spiral swords with vergil and pretty much guarantee a kill. You can also do this off a knockdown in the corner with morrigan into shadow servant into spiral swords.
Off an airthrow with morrigan (or if you just hit use it as a safe hyper), use shadow servant (mid screen), devil trigger, trick h, s (you get ground bounce and can now do a full combo with vergil)
In addition to the above, shadow servant -> devil trigger is almost always safe, and if shadow servant hits you get a combo
If you dimension slash with vergil, you can shadow servant with morrigan
Sorry that I kinda just brushed past your reply; it was great! I guess I was just wondering if there was more, but thanks!
And I never thought about all of the amazing DHC stuff they had together! My brain was just stuck on how Rapid Slash could help Morrigan, but clearly, that’s not where the brunt of their strength lies. Thank you so much for the incredibly in depth help!
Is there anything I can learn with Morrigan in training mode besides soul fist loops/combos?
Does her S launcher anti air very well? I tested it against haggars pipe and it anti aired pretty decently if you were spaced properly. Theres always the problem of it being blocked and being unsafe though.
What is the best blockstring to use? As a darkstalkers character she has a lot of options when it comes to a hit confirm string, but what one is the best? Or does it not matter?
What is the forward + M normal used for?
6M is used for anti airing at certain angles, and frame traps for counter hits. On counterhit it has absurd hit stun, and basically leads to death combos. I personally never use her launcher raw, as S and j.S are the only things she can’t flight cancel. Shadow Blade is usually quit competent for AA, and 5H does rather well at it too, both either chain or flight cancel to full combos on hit as well. 6M is also used early in combo to combo to Soul Drain, more notably in AV than out as you can fly cancel the Drain and continue the combo in AV.
Another tip I missed for a long time, is that for the best damage from air Finishing Shower, you need to wait until it starts to hit to aim it up.
Also, j.L is fucking godlike. Abuse it.
She has a basic mix-up on grounded opponents that you should get used to using. Jump to approximately minimum airdash height, then airdash down. j.H hits overhead, and j.S whiffs and causes you to land. After whiffing j.S, you can use st.L for a low or hcb+A ~ qcb+S for a grab (+ Flight OS). On P2 side, call Hidden Missiles right before hcb+A to get a combo afterwards.
My preferred hit-confirm string at the moment is st.L-st.M-cr.M-cr.H. On block, I like to do dp+H xx qcb+S to continue pressure.
Kinda super bump, but do you think point Morrigan should have Dark Harmonizer or Shadow Blade? Dark Harmonizer gives you a lot of meter if you’ve tagged out via raw tag/DHC/TAC, etc., but then whoever the new point is only has at max 1 neutral game assist. Finishing Shower also isn’t that good of a THC super.
Shadow Blade doesn’t give you more meter but could be used as an anti-air in really odd situations, but more importantly, the invincible CC offers a strong reversal option to more defensive characters and Shadow Servant having OTG properties makes it a much stronger super for THCs.
Thoughts? (Well, whoever’s on point doesn’t really use their assist too much; Dark Harmonizer is probably the way to go for 2nd or anchor Morrigan.)
Unless it’s changed since vanilla, Harmonizer is also invincible as a CC, so you can cancel it into Shadow Servant for a net cost of 1.7 bars. It’s not as good as what you’ll get off Shadow Blade, but it’s still an option.
I guess it depends on the rest of your team. I actually use her 2nd and use her Fireball (call and forget, it may randomly help natural game…). DH allows you to play more defensibly as you know you will gain meter faster almost no meter what, and this setup perfectly Morrigan’s returns with AV streak. I actually don’t really trust SB as anti air, or even getho gtfo assist. Morrigan as support character to some point is pretty weak, I guess that why most put her on point.
Well, actually using Shadow Blade for the Shadow Blade assist is probably a bad idea… using it for the CC and THC makes more sense, though. I see what you mean about Dark Harmonizer being more suited for defensive players and maybe Shadow Blade is for more offensive players.
(Didn’t know Harmonizer was an invincible CC though!)
Here’s another tip for people who are going to pick up Morrigan: If you see the opponent has a character on their team with a teleport attack like Strider or Super Skrull, take them out FIRST. Because Morrigan spends so much time in the air, it’s easy to get crossed up or eat a teleport attack that combos easily or leads into heavily damaging supers.
Good idea, kill the opponent before they kill you.
Pro tip
Ugh, I’m having difficulty doing anything after: L M H F+H J.Mx2 J.H Soulfist M, I can’t seem to do the dash down, as advertised in the Morrigan Player’s guide, and I’m having difficulty reliably cancelling Soulfist M into flight.
