when/where has every one said that’s an even matchup?
i’ve never been able to give an honest assessment of the guy gief matchup until about a week ago when i got to play a decent gief. and now i can honestly say… that shit is difficult. if guy’s strengths lie in being in some one’s face… what are you supposed to do when his strengths are negated? this is where guy’s ass walkspeed comes into play. if he can’t space and get gief to whiff his normals… guy’s fucked because of gief’s superior footsy tools.
Just a guess, but combofiend does maybe kinda maybe know what he’s talkin about. For the record I’m usually cautious vs. Gief b/c SPD > ANYTHING on block damn it, and I didn’t ever consider this match to be easy.
Madmaestro we have exactly the same strategy against gief.Normally you down want to walk yourself into the corner but in this matchup you do.I just walk back using those pokes you mentioned to whiff punish etc and try and score some hits, then I just runaway.I use wall jump instead to get out of the corner though.
Also another poke I remember have some success with against Gief is far st.short.Normally not too great of poke because it aims high but with a tank like gief you can often get him standing up walking forward.
I’m pretty sure a lot of people have seen this, but for those who haven’t, Shin Akuma’s channel is full of SSF4 replays. Searching for “guy” on his channel brings up TONS of Guy videos, maybe some of them can help a few people out with matchups and whatnot.
I don’t think I’ve beaten a Gief online to be honest. Maybe once or twice.
I like using cr.HP as an anti-air in this match up. It does pretty well against Gief’s j.MK. Unfortunately, like all of Guy’s other normal anti-airs, it often trades with Gief’s j.HP.
Man just watched Kiryu’s latest vs. Staygold and Staygold still rapes Kiryu’s Guy for free! Still a 5-5 IMO but Staygold just straight up outplays Kiryu. Stays at the optimal distance to keep Guy out and refuses to put up with his run/stop non-sense. Thank god no Ryu’s I know play this way.
Shoto cr.mk rapes Guy, that’s the sad truth:

It avoids or hits elbow clean(both versions) and all his jump in’s except an extremely late and perfectly spaced j.hk.

It beats both his running options clean.

It goes under Guy’s tatsus, making his only reversal completely useless. This is beyond stupid when you consider that the move is SUPPOSED to hit low attacks.

And cr.mk is just a better poke that anything in Guy’s arsenal.

Shotos can use cr.mk almost completely indiscriminantly. It’s the perfect offensive and defensive tool. The only thing that can hit it (semi-reliably) is a properly spaced stand mk or a cr.hk as a punish (which shotos can easily punish with cr.mpxxhado)
Guy has to be plain better than his opponent to beat shotos. Any impression to the contrary I’d attribute to your opponents not being familiar with the matchup and how it can be distilled down to spamming 1 stupidly good move.
If STAYGOLD knew the matchup better, Kiryu would have lost even worse. Notice he doesn’t even punish blocked hozantos properly?
I just had to quote this as I thought I was the only one who felt how ass this was. I played Valle in a set with Guy and all he did was cr.mk. That was the first time that I was truly disgusted with using Guy as there was nothing I could do to stop him from sitting on it. Then on top of that, he could do random ass uppercuts into ultra which made the match even more infuriating. Anything which would give me damage felt like it was instantly negated as I couldn’t attempt any followups. I just had to sit there and play reactionary, which is boring as hell. Valle on the other hand got to do whatever he wanted (and by that I mean hit c.mk x 10000000000000000000000000000000) and I just got to die regardless of how hard I worked!
I really hope that they fix Guy’s properties in the arcade release. It’s so frustrating to know that you’re outplaying people but due to dumb hitbox bs, combos miss and reversals somehow whiff.
As for that Kiryu vs Gief. That was a good video, helped me learn some anti airs I was unsure of. I shall try to apply them next time I fight a gief. I still think that match is like 8-2 though.
God damn, that Ryu fight really takes a crap on Guy players. Feels bad man. Hah, love how Kiryu says impossible in the last match. Definitely felt like it.
I play a pretty good Gief on a weekly basis and here are some of the things I’ve learned:
[]From a far jump in by Gief (where he would land close to, but not next to you) c.mp works wonders. Anything closer than that and his jumping fierce will stuff your c.mp and c.mk. s.HK will trade in Gief’s favor and TK Izuna is hard (but not impossible) to pull off because his jump arc is low.
[]Blocked greenhands (ex and regular (thx Blooddrunk)) should be punished HARD. s.hk into FF chain or at least c.mp into FF chain, although a good Gief won?t ex-greenhand without meter to FADC. You can also Ultra 2 if you’re decent with the input.
[]Most Gief?s don?t expect to be thrown. Mix it in every once in a while.
[]This goes without saying but no run/stop pressure unless you want to eat an SPD. I would avoid using run/overhead because on block it?s an SPD. Only run/slide if you have meter to FADC if blocked. Also, max distance c.hk only, unless you?re punishing a lariat.
[]Standing far hp and c.hp are good for keeping Gief out. Be sure to space it properly because otherwise he can time his s.hk to coincide with the recoil of your s.hp, end up beside you and then jab SPD.
[]Avoid trying random bushin flips into grab because he can lariat that on reaction. Elbow drops beat lariat but if he blocks instead, you?re eating an SPD and then have to deal with his vortex. It?s a dangerous guessing game that is NOT in your favour.
[]Be careful baiting with elbow drop. If done within a certain range, Gief can ex-greenhand you as you land, score a knock-down and then put you in the vortex.
[]If you are in the vortex it?s pretty sucky as you guessing wrong favors him and you guessing right just resets the match. You really have to vary your escape attempts here because Gief has an answer for every one of your responses. I use focus backdash, ex-tatsu, ex-bushin flip, normal throw and old fashioned blocking.
[]Ex-tatsu is the obvious go-to. It will beat jump-ins but can be safe jumped and is super bait-able.
[]Focus backdash is to deal with jump-in attack + c.lp spam but loses to ex-greenhand if he sees the backdash coming.
[]Ex-bushin flip is good if you suspect a safe jump into SPD because it?s unthrowable. Loses to jumpin-lariat and I think c.lp spam because of start-up.
[]If Gief goes for jump-in with down+lk (knee attack) and then goes for normals you can throw him before his normals come out. Obviously this loses to SPD.

I tend to leave Gief alone on oki as the risk/reward is simply not in your favour IMO.
Overall, this match is frustrating because you can?t play Guy how he was meant to be played (rushdown). It?s alot about playing keep away and just laming it out (which is how I HATE playing Guy). Uncancelled hp bushin flip is a great tool for staying away but don?t get predictable against a Gief with Ultra 2. I?d probably call this a 6-4 matchup for Gief. Maybe at 7-3 at most.
Also, one thing I?m trying to figure out is how to counter his s.hk that he uses to get close to you. Abel can c.mk or c.hp into CoD on reaction for big combo damage but I?m not sure if Guy has the same sort of tools to make that kind of punish. From what I can tell, Guy can only get one hit and then the match is reset.
This writeup seems a bit more realistic than the 5-5 nonsense people are usually going on about.
Honestly guys, I understand wanting to be optimistic about matchups, but as the game gets fleshed out it’s becoming increasingly obvious that Guy has next to no matchups in his favor. I don’t think you’re doing anyone any favors by saying otherwise. That’s not to say that he can’t get wins, but let’s not be delusional. He has ways to cope; it’s usually an uphill battle though.
