The Political Thread 2021

Educated is easy to measure. How many degrees do you have on your wall :woman_shrugging:
But intelligence? Thatā€™s a different ball game. Like I said, I work with people that have been as ā€œeducatedā€ as you can possible be and theyā€™re fucking morons. Dolts. Dummies. Shit for brains.

Youā€™re getting defensive for no reason.
I asked a question
But I guess when you speak so broadly you have to be defensive from all the extra shit you catch in that broad net

Well that is kind of true and not true. Just because you have a degree doesnā€™t mean you are very smart. Perhaps I used the wrong word with ā€œeducatedā€. But I also know plenty of people who went to BS colleges and have a degree, but they arenā€™t even using that degree for anything and have jobs outside of their field, making peanuts.

Sorry if I derailed the shit out of this thread lol.

Nah Iā€™m not defensive at all, but you cherry picked a quote and the quote in your post makes it look like I said something I didnā€™t. That is the only reason I called that part out.

Big Tech is only moving its ass now because theyā€™ve been under political scrutiny for years and donā€™t want legislation being passed that might inconvenience them and their absolute control over the largest spaces of public discourse in history/information on peopleā€™s lives and preferences useful for targeted ads.

Back in 2016 Big Tech sites were thoroughly used by right-wing groups to publicize themselves, Trump and whatever things they were supporting all over the world. Being based in liberal countries didnā€™t stop Big Tech from not giving a shit and making money over the ads, and seldomly open misinformation, that campaigns like Trumpā€™s or Brexit were using (and are still using with the fraudulent fraud claims).

In the years that came after politicians, surely partially motivated by salt, started looking into Facebook, Youtube and stuff like that arguing that they werenā€™t doing anything to stop the spread of misinformation that was influencing electoral results and as a result Big Tech companies started behaving less friendly toward the most extreme right-wing talking points probably only because they donā€™t want controversy over themselves or even worse legislation being passed to force them to do handle their networks with some thought given to how they influence society.

It was self-interest that made them help political groups spread misinformation years ago and it is self-interest that is making them ban and stamp down on the very groups they allowed to grow on their platform in the first place because they donā€™t want unwanted legislative consequences that might put their control and profits in jeopardy. It is and has always been about making money and covering their asses.

You didnā€™t, cause this is important, and part of the reason that thereā€™s such a rift between parties.

Liberals tend to go to college and get an degree. They tend to be more ā€œeducatedā€ as a result. But they tout these degrees as indicators of ā€œintelligenceā€ which is a false equivalency. And they use that to stereotype conservatives as dumb hillbillies. Which then pisses off the right.

Thereā€™s a lot of reason that an intelligent person might not have the ability or desire to get an education.

My dad isnā€™t necessarily ā€œeducatedā€ (didnā€™t go to college) but heā€™s one of the most intelligent people I know. His ability to solve problems, observe and assess things, and think logically are amazing.

Yeah calling the other side rednecks or hillbillies is not going to make them feel good for sure.

But I mean, when you take a look at the people who stormed the capitol last week, Iā€™d be lying if those words didnā€™t cross my mind for nearly every single one of them.

And Iā€™m pretty confident that I am not the only one who thought that.

Are there any correlations between being educated and trusting science vs being uneducated and trusting faith, and right wing vs left wing?

To me it seems really fucking stupid to trust faith over science. But Iā€™m educated, so thereā€™s probably a some bias there. And yes, I lean left but Iā€™m registered as an independent. Iā€™m nowhere near fullblown SJW commie or whatever because I still call my buddies FGTs.

I already posted that the majority of white men with college degrees voted for Trump in 2016, its probably the same in 2020 but I havenā€™t checked. What do you reply to that?

Its also a fact that Trump supporters have a higher average income than the general population, and since you are already going that route, its accepted that there is a correlation between income and intelligence.

And the majority of surgeons are Republicans, as for many other professions. Your conclusions are rather simplistic.

Hmm maybe. My mother-in-law went to college and got a degree, but is also incredibly distrusting of science. Sheā€™s either talking about Trump or God constantly, usually at the same time.

Then my mom is also college educated, diligently Christian, but very scientifically minded in her political decisions.

Thereā€™s a lot of other stuff in there, my mom has a science degree, wifeā€™s mom has an education degree. My mom attends a liberal church in a liberal leaning denomination, wifeā€™s mom is a part of a conservative church in a conservative denomination.
Itā€™s a ā€œchicken before the egg, also what version of the bible are you reading?ā€ situation

A lot of doctors are republican.

THOSE TAX CUTS DOE!
