About the Saturn, it had one really annoying thing for me, in that it couldn’t handle transparent textures as well as the Playstation could.
I remember getting the Saturn Version of SOTN… I was so excited, getting to play it on a better controller and it had additional areas and bosses to explore!
But even though the Saturn was better at 2d stuff usually, it ended up looking like crap. The lights, mistform, any number of things just looked grainy, weird, and bad.
As expensive as Saturn was at launch, they should’ve just shoved Model 1 hardware in there for arcade-perfect VF and Virtua Cop, then almost-perfect VF2, Daytona, Virtual-On etc. Fuck it, it was gonna fail anyway.
Whenever you hear this, you know shit just got real and it’s time to start walking in place.
When I think of all the games I got to play on the PS2, I swear… there are very few that actually stack up to the PS1’s library. And even though some people didn’t like Chrono Cross, it was 500x more solid than most JRPGs after it and it’s OST is still one of the greatest OSTs (if not the greatest) ever made.
Shoutouts to Valkyrie Profile (Lenneth). Enix should’ve gambled it’s production numbers instead of limit it to 73,000 copies. I spent $100 buying a used copy (yeah, it was worth it) and now that shit is going for like $450 on amazon.
On a serious note, there’s just way too much emphasis, thus way too much costs on companies developing around what they can do with the current hardware when it comes to graphics. We get so many successful army games because they’re so easy to get sponsored. Meanwhile, other companies are pretty much in the hole trying to play catchup
I enjoyed Final Fantasy X, but something about it had always bugged me back when it was released and it never hit me until I noticed 13 that the games were becoming smaller in content and overall more linear. The series seems to have taken some steps forward (with it’s battle system for example) at the cost of making the game look and feel more real on the outside. It’s so superficial.
Man, so many hours of my life were spent playing the PSX. Playstation Magazine, Playstation Underground, and I forgot last one(purple demo disk?). My favorite Demo disk of all time will always be PM Disk 20. I played the fuck out of Ehrgeiz & Legend of Legaia and let’s not talk about the MGS1 demo <—holyshit! Also, I don’t know why but for some reason Treasures of the Deep(Demo) was fucking godlike!
Games that I will never forget…

Legend of Legaia - shit was godlike! Me, my friend, and his sister would play this together(there was three main characters to play).

This is just a sample of my all times list. I could go on forever, there were so many fun games back in the day.
That era in gaming is still my most beloved, and a lot of titles from that gen have gone down to be my all-time favorites. FFVII-IX, Tactics, SotN, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Brave Fencer Musashi, Parasite Eve, Resident Evil 1-3, Legend of Legaia, Bushido Blade, Battle Arena Toshinden, Lunar SSSC, PaRappa the Rapper, Suikoden II, Vagrant Story, Grandia, Dead or Alive, Guilty Gear, Alpha 3… and motherfuckin’ Xenogears. I could sit here and name many more. I’ve been playing videogames since the NES, but the PSX/SAT/N64 era is what turned me into a “gamer”.
…Hah, sitting here thinking back on it just made me remember how many times I played the Metal Gear Solid demo in anticipation of the game. Counless, countless times. I can probably still recite the entire dialogue from the demo in Japanese.
i had a saturn and didn’t realize they had stopped making games for it for like 6 months…the first non-sports game on the playstation that had me hooked was the original grand theft auto.
WWF Smackdown 1 - Royal Rumble with dat soundtrack
Tekken 2 - played all day then wouldn’t turn it off cause we’d lose all the characters cause we had no memory card.
Twisted Metal 2 - Co-op tournament over and over till we beat it.
Tobal No.1 - People bought it for the FF demo then returned the game. Had a great soundtrack and I could pop it in my CD player to hear it.
Street Sk8ter 2 - The first skater game I ever played. Never played Tony Hawk.
Tekken 3 - Fuck the haters. Eddy Gordo was the shit.
