Specs you sound more like a gay William Shatner than I expected lol, anyways I liked IWBTG but I wouldn’t call it a good game, his new project looks very interesting the dive kick and parry had me sold. I’m usually not one for 8 bit platformers as I prefer 16 bit but the background scenery is beautiful.
Aaru’s awakening is launching Q2 2013 anyone who calls themselves a platformer fan and hasn’t played the demo is fucking up.
I used to dislike IWBTG and games like it… until I saw Kayin writing about it. And he makes great points, about the audience he created it for, about the game actually being quite fair compared to some NES games (Battletoads, etc.). And the IWBTG games control wonderfully. “Platform hell” still isn’t my favorite genre but IWBTG is way, way better than Kaizo hacks and whatnot.
I’d argue that Brave Earth is quite a bit above 8-bit with its parallax and sprite collision, though as someone who condemned Capcom for keeping MM10 (not 9) 8-bit-esque I can appreciate that. Though for a smaller team, 8-bit assets are quite a bit easier to create.
The game looks gorgeous but I’m torn between the description on Greenlight and the “Puzzle” genre which I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate seeing in my 2D platformers.
It doesn’t take an evil super genius to see who IWBTG is made for, as I said I enjoyed the game and it accomplishes exactly what Kayin intended it to however, it’s not something I will play again any time soon. Brave Earth however, seems like it could be a game I play multiple times just for how fun it looks.
Anyways, play the fucking demo loser, you will love it.
XBLA upgraded version of Spelunky is coming to PS3 and Vita.
Game is fucking addictive and challenging, so if you haven’t played it due to the exclusivity (or not playing the OG PC version), you now have your chance.
I was so close to the 8 minute normal speedrun achievement 2 days ago, only to die at the end of 4-3 due to a devious placement of two crush blocks blocking my path (and me having no bombs). It’s like the RNG just knew the best setup to kill me.
I still haven’t figured out how to beat the game “the hard way”, and I don’t want to look at any FAQs or hints.
Shovel Knight doesn’t look new, but it does look exactly like the kind of game I’ve been wanting another of for a very very long time and one of the few of these “Look like an NES” games that looks artistically wonderful. It’s graphic artistic level reminds me of Blaster Master and the gameplay is like the awesome Zelda II Sequel Nintendo has continued to deny me.
Shovel Knight looks fun so I’ll cop it but I’m not as hype for it as you guys. The team has super talented people and their kickstarter describes SK as a mashup of MM, CV, and DS which sounds incredible, but the footage doesn’t live up to what I imagine. The art, music, level design, and game play so far makes me say “that looks cool” not “OMGWTFBBQ GDLK!”.
Now this is what makes me jizz in my virtual retro pants, for all I know the game could end up worse than Silver Surfer NES but dammit it’s the most impressive game trailer I’ve ever seen, I’ve watched it at least 30 times:
If the levels design themselves in interesting and fun ways then it could be really cool, but if not it could be really boring. also i wonder if it’s going to have quite as much nuance as Metroid Design, which tends to have lots of nooks and crannies and small passageways to look for, which is part of what makes the series so much fun.
I also worry about the RPG aspect of it. I hope they do a better job with the mechanics then Igarashi does.
Chasm looks like it could be good but there are a few quality metroidvanias out already so the bar is pretty high. Speaking of which Darkout looks really awesome and is already out on several platforms for PC but I’m waiting for the steam release:
This game came out recently. I fell in love with the flash version found here while bored at my ‘job’ on campus last semester. You guys should at least check out the free adultswim version of the game it’s super addicting I’ve only played a little bit of Deluxe but it added 5 characters and a level select mode. I’m only on the second since I wanted to try out the newer characters, even though ninja and cape are going to be my mains I think, but the second level added completely new ‘bad’ blocks.
The main idea is your character is in a tetris tube suspended over spikes and you shoot blocks to level up your gun, a la cave story, and colored blocks blow up like colored blocks adjacent to them. So most of the game is deciding what blocks to kill to keep your footing while also shooting as many blocks as you can to get as many points and gems as you can. It’s really addicting. Check the free one for a pretty solid idea about what the paid has to offer.
Shovel Knight should be launching any day now, so much more hype for it now than when it was first announced, I expect it to be one of the top platformers of the past few years:
1001 Spikes is out now for anyone who likes games like Super Meat Boy it should be on your radar.
For anyone who liked Mirror’s Edge or Jet Set Radio, this is eye sex:
Also Cloudbuilt is out now:
Rain World looks really special it looks like a survival platformer hybrid:
