The Platformer Thread: Aaru's Awakening is out!

I dunno what to call that game, but it sure looks cool.

Man I want a Vita.

I am quite intrigued and impressed by this game. The same people behind Patapon eh? Interesting…

I want a second job. :-/ I just cancelled my preorder a few days ago.

Glad I’m getting a Vita on launch. Cuz that game has been on my radar ever since it was announced.

Anywho, I’m glad a thread like this exists. It saddens me to see a once dominant genre take an arrow to the knee and fall into oblivion.

Only to rise back up again with it’s brothers Shoot Em Up and Fighting Games?

I don’t plan on getting vita since I’m very happy with 3DS but that game looks fun. Also I don’t think you can say the genre has fallen off anymore there are lots of quality platformers out now it’s just extremely rare to see them on 360/ps3 disc. I’d love to see more robust full priced 2D platformers like Rayman Origins.

anyone see this shiz?

For whatever reason, Kid Chameleon really stuck with me as a kid. Probably because I only rented the game and never owned it.

Bumping this cuz I be damned if this thread will die.

Should’ve been more specific. What I meant to say was that 3D platformers are declining. Outside of Mario, R&C, or the new Sly Cooper game coming out (which looks awesome) there hasn’t been a new 3D platformer imo that has made an impact or at least sold well. Sure 2D platformers are back in the swing of things but his 3D brother is still in rehab.

I still think one of the pinnacles of the 3D platform sub-genre were the Jak & Daxter games. There was a lot of variety in those games and it really felt like ND did their best to make each game feel different while still keeping its platforming roots. Not to mention that the series set the bar high in terms of storytelling in platformers. With the exception of the Sly games I have yet to see a platformer that has come even close to the appeal of the J&D plots.

in no order:

 1. dkc2
 2. yoshi’s island
 3. smb3
 4. smw
 5. sonic 2

i’m doing a 100% run of yoshi’s island right now, actually…its still clear to me that the game was ahead of its time. i remember getting it for christmas when it first dropped.

edit
i wasn’t aware that jgr counted as a platformer. in that case…damn, i dunno. i need a top 6 because i don’t want to take any of the games off of my list off. honorable mention goes to aladdin for the genesis.

3D platformers never found the perfect camera system to utilize. No one likes to miss jumps because they can’t judge the distance.

There are these hired killers in some kind of union you should inquire about.

Mario 3D Land disagrees. But yeah Mario 64 wasn’t ideal.

the one and only:pray:

People, like myself, with monovision can’t judge distance well in Mario 3D Land, because we can’t see in 3D. So, I have to disagree.

gotta be one of the coolest boss fights in platform gaming history:

its a damn shame that:

-nintendo doesn’t make creative (IMHO) boss battles like this anymore.
-the music in mario games isn’t as good as it used to be.
-nintendo doesn’t create cool, interesting enemies and bosses like they used to.

everything feels too kid like and soft now.

think about how mind blowing that boss fight was back in the 90’s.

Well, I’m glad that at least one other person loves Klonoa, so that I’m not alone. ^^;;;

One great game that I don’t think anyone has mentioned yet is Ape Escape 3 for PS2. It’s a wonderful game that not enough people took a fair glance at it seems. I know it does have the dual analog controls that take a little getting used to, but it’s not that bad; they became second nature to me in no time.

I’m also surprised that nobody has mentioned classic Taito games like Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands, Liquid Kids, The New Zealand Story, and so forth. Liquid Kids is especially one of their best overlooked gems, and those of you who enjoy old arcade-style platformers should check it out.

I was just thinking of this game after playing some crappy game on my Ipad. I remember pretending to be sick so I could play that when I was like 9 or 10 because I rented it and knew I could not beat it in 3 days with school being a factor. I won’t even call in sick for games now a days, either because games are not as fun or I had to find a healthy balance. But I suspect its cuz most games suck.

Not a fanoforchestra?

No fans of LittleBigPlanet?

Easily one of the best.
My favorite platformers in no specific order

LittleBigPlantet 1/2
Metriod Prime 1/2/3 (yes if Mario 3D is a platformer, than this game is too)
Sly Cooper series
Super Mario Bros

that boss fight didn’t look very difficult and mario galaxy had good music

little big planet community is good at making michael jackson and shark levels…and not much else
