Rayman Origins can be found for 30 dollars or less at some shops.
I got it for 60 dollars and it was worth every friggin’ cent <3
Super Mario World
Yoshi’s Island
Yoshi’s Island DS
I haven’t played a platformer in a while, but these 3 are the ones that I absolutely love.
just take the case off the Mega drive so the japanese cartridges fit
i’m sorry but this game is total trash, all the popular gaming sites hyped this and when i play it it’s just another flash game. the ikaruga part of the game was just thrown in and given little thought.
Alex Kidd in miracle world - what the fuck happened to built in games of this quality? alex didn’t just rely on his strength like mario, he would also use strategy to smash his foes. This is one of the few games I was unable to beat
Super Mario Bros - Beating mario bros twice without losing a life is the only way to play, I can play this game like a fiddle
Sonic 2 - awesome bonus stages (cept for the CPU tails who screws you over. I turn him off in options) performing crazy shortcuts gave this game heaps of replay value and i think this is the first sonic game where he can turn super saiyan
Wonder boy 2 - had RPG elements, was full of hidden monies and doors. jumping left to right quickly has never been this much fun. also unable to beat this one…
My favorites:
Yoshi’s Island
Super Mario World
Donkey Kong Country
Super Mario Bros 3
Metal Slug X
For those playing Rayman Origins:
In the 4th world
[details=Spoiler]The Treasure Chase’s last section seems glitched or some such; it’s do-able mind you, but you need to time your jump carefully.
Basically you need to be on the right side of the screen when the game shifts to the right, otherwise Rayman’ll die and you have to start over again. I had to replay that section like 20 times before I got the Tooth ^_^;[/details]
The problem with R&C is that as the series went on it became less and less a platformer and more and more a shooter. I dunno how the Ps3 ones are, i never played em but by the time that Arena version R&C came out Platforming was mostly nonexistent.
Orly? And this isn’t a spoiler. I personally never had any trouble with it.
I don’t think I care about Mario games anymore. For any given Mario game, I’ve either done it to death (Mario 3, Mario World) or think it’s wildly overrated (Mario Galaxy 2, anything with “New” in the title). I also hate holding run, because it hurts my thumb and I always want to be running (I like how Yoshi’s Island and most 3D Marios nix the run button).
I also don’t look at Mario games as sufficient anymore. We live in the indie game era, where I can find much more worthwhile platformers on Steam. I recently played through VVVVVV and there was way more magic in that experience than any Mario game in recent memory.
I haven’t been all that into Mario game in a long time either. I didn’t even get half way through Galaxy 1 before i moved on. I also really hate the way Mario controls in 3D. It’s like the idea of tight controls went out the window for floaty, slippery controls, and odd isometric camera angles which don’t feel very conducive to platforming to me.
I beat and liked Galaxy 1 years ago, need to play Galaxy 2 someday though heh.
Do Wonder Boy games count as platformers? I’ve been playing the shit out of Dragon’s Curse and Wonder Boy in Monster World, anxiously awaiting the XBL release of Monster World 4, and… wait, Adventure Island 2 and above don’t really count. Anywho, there’s a fair amount of platforming involved even in the Zelda 2-esque ones.
The problem with new age Mario games is that nintendo is pretty terrible at designing levels these days.

Here is a link to a great Mario game, Super Talking Time Bros. Basically a bunch of dudes on a forum decided that with peer review and constructive criticism they could make a better platformer than 90% of the indie developers and they succeeded, this game is fun as hell and has a lot of interesting levels.
How old is this thread and no mention of Jet Set Radio. If you look at them as platformers they were really innovative for their time. And of course Sonic ran off with the JSR’s ollie mechanic (but didn’t steal JSR’s physics engine, something “classic” Sonic used to be famous for)
I played the Gravity Daze/Rush demo today. Very very short but the gameplay is promising.
Damn we all forgot JGR and JSRF the quintessential 3D platformers. Epic fail son.
I don’t get all the hate on the new marios, I loved Mario 3D Land because it plays and feels like the best bits of Mario 3 and Super Mario Galaxy, although I was a little disappointed with New Super Mario Bros DS, you can tell it was a lazy effort.
Just because it’s a sidescroller doesn’t mean it’s a platform game in my opinion. I don’t consider super metroid or castlevania platformers even though they are very good.
Platformer to me has a lot of jumping involved. Timing, reaction, control, and memorization are emphasized. The DKC series was better than the super mario series in my opinion . The rayman games hit all of those. Rayman 2 was better than any of the mario games strictly in terms of a platformer.
Mario games have fallen off in my opinion as far as the platforming aspect goes. I’m talking about the new super mario bros on wii and ds. Super Paper Mario on Wii was better than that. The thing is some people like that stuff. I haven’t played 3d land yet, but Super Mario Galaxy 1, I found very good, so if 3D land is like SMG, it’s probably good.
Favorite goes to Donkey Kong Country 2 and Rayman 2.
Galaxy 2 is more of the same. If that’s your thing, then you’ll like it. All of the reviewers did, I happen to think Galaxy 1 was way better than Galaxy 2. I got all the stars in Galaxy 1, had no incentive to do it with Galaxy 2.
Just discovered this game when browsing X-box live and saw the demo. Was kinda hooked, bought a used one tonight. Love the graphical style…hard to describe, but the simplfied “clean” look is very appealing. Without coming off as boring or sterile.
Kinda like how old school 3D titles used to look(Saturn, PSX), only updated.
I don’t think this game was advertised well at all, kinda like those movie trailers out there that totally the misrepresent the actual film. I remember when the title was nearing release with ads attempting to hype it, and having no clue whatsoever of its gameplay.
In the end i just figured it was another run of the mill 3D action title and didn’t bother. The uninspired cover didn’t help.
wonderboy 2 is 50% platformer (it’s linear, strict timer) 50% action rpg (respawning mobs) unlike most platformers it lacked one hit kills and pitfalls…but its not like u could grind mobs to power level. the thing is I haven’t really played any RPGs where you can jump so to me its a platformer.
Probably JGR got skipped over because it’s also two other types of game: Extreme sports and Art Creation (you can spend a lot of time in the graffiti mode). But yeah no doubt that it should be included. I miss JGR/JSRF to death. If Sega were smart they would bring it back as a massive multiplayer game with a focus on creating your own ‘gang’ with an ever expanding city. Maybe. Or at least pick up where JSRF left off and incorporate police into the regular gameplay again. And what do you mean that Sonic ran off with JSR’s ollie mechanic? An Ollie is a jump.
What is this Gravity Daze/Rush?
I was tired I meant grind. And shit yeah they need to bring JSR back.
Here’s the Gravity game
