Green Man is having a Konami sale. One of the games on the sale is the new Rocket Knight from a few years ago. Game doesn’t go on sale often so grab it while it’s cheap

No order (by the way I consider Contra, Ninja Gaiden, Megaman, Metroid, GnG, etc action games so they aren’t in this list.)
-Super Mario Bros 3
-Duck Tales Remastered
-Yoshi’s Island
-Donkey Kong Country 2
-Kirby Superstar
-Super Meatboy
-Rayman Legends
What systems do you own? I’m assuming you have a PC so these are some of the best modern side scrollers around in no order:
Fez
Rayman Origins
Rayman Legends
Limbo
Super Time Force Ultra
Volgarr The Viking
Castle Crashers
Dust: An Elysian Tale
Cave Story+
Lone Survivor Director’s Cut
All incredible, nearly flawless games and completely different from each oher, there are many more, but this list should be enough to get you started. I personally suggest starting with Volgarr.
Don’t forget this game
Freedom planet looks BOSS I’m gonna pick that up on steam.
Only played a little of Freedom Planet but yeah getting serious Sonic and Rocket Knight Adventures vibes which are GOAT status ill definitely get to it eventually.
@DrellyFish dont give up hope stage 4 is where shot starts to get real lol.
With all the (justified) hate of Phil Fish have any of you played Fez let alone beaten it? I feel like most of SRK is too biased against him to be able to judge his game fairly (that he mostly just did the art on which I admit is incredible and one of the best looking indies).
He might be a total hipster douchebag, but Fez is GDLK.
I really liked Fez tbh. It is very pretty, has a cool gimmick, has good puzzles, and just has nice little touches in there that say a lot about how much passion actually went into the game. I hate that Phil had to be a vocal douche and turn everybody against him, 'cause the game is good.
On another note, I’ve just beaten Castle in the Darkness which is a metroidvania style 2D platformer that I recommend that every fan of platformers play! It’s very cheap and a solid game IMO.
I think I ‘beat’ Fez but didn’t 100% it. I love it from a technical standpoint, trying to figure out how the plane shift mechanic actually works. That part of the game is beautiful along with the look and style. Everything else is sort of take it or leave it, but the plane shifting blew me away.
Castle in the Darkness looks tits. Thanks for the recommendation!
Castle in the Darkness looks cool. But Aaru’s Awakening is one of the most beautiful looking art styles I’ve ever seen in a 2D game which is saying a lot. I’ll cop it during next steam sale for sure.
Dustforce over all in the style department, is where I stand.
Castle in the Darkness comes from one of the guys on the *Binding of Issac: Rebirth *team so that puts it even higher on my list.
Surprise no one has brought up Ori yet.
I’m looking for the release of Chasm. I played the demo at my local GameStop and that ish was good although the control feels a bit stiff. I’m sure it’ll be fix by the time it’s release.
My top 5 platform game:
- Super Mario Bros 3
- Castlevania Symphony of the Night(wait…there’s a second castle!? mindblown)
- Yoshi’s Island
- Donkey Kong Country
- Ninja Gaiden 2(NES)
Honorable mention to Batman(NES). Dat soundtrack is gdlk!
I remember seeing Chasm in development. Looks good.
@PozerWoIf have you played Ori? I haven’t gotten to yet, it seemed to me it got a ton of hype like as it was released. It looks really pretty.
Aaru’s Awakening is free on PS4?? I’m getting that shit ta-DAY!
Symphony of the Night ain’t no goddamn platformer… It looks like one, almost plays like one, but it ain’t.
If you had said CV 3, Bloodlines, or Rondo, I could agree, but not Symphony.
Beyond that, good to see some love for Batman(NES) and Yoshi’s Island.
Yoshi’s Island is in everyone’s top whatever list
SOTN is definitely a platformer by definition, Po just about any game where platforming is emphasized falls under the genre, that doesn’t have to be the only thing a game has going on in fact I’m sure the number of hybrid platformers far outweighs pure platformers.
I love the Yoshi’s Island series but I wouldn’t put it in my top 50 platformer list maybe top 100 though.
Speaking of which has anyone copped Aaru’s Awakening? Demo was hard as balls, @Bious if you want another game to tear your hair out over looks like you have it and it’s fucking gorgeous too.
Has anyone else tried 1001 Spikes…just no…if you aren’t committed to a real man’s challenge just walk away from this one lol.
I don’t even know what to say to this. Really? Its one of the best looking games on the SNES, it has an original and diverse yet simple moveset, a ton of levels and it lets you play how you want. Everyone can play it differently
How do you control the teleport ball in Aaru’s Awakening? I’m gonna be sad if you say with the mouse.
Also stop saying how gorgeous it is! The tele ball just pops out of the PC’s ass with no animation and I watched a 2 minute gameplay video and the sprite glitched twice. The backgrounds can be amazing looking but if the PC’s animation is messing up in 2 minutes of game play… that’s a bad look. (And I don’t think it was a beta build either… the video was new. Less than a month old.)
I’m still in Antarctica in 1001 Spikes. Never had the drive to finish it.
PS: Still able to get a sub-19 in Volgarr while paying attention primarily to X-Files.
I agree with Po. Symphony of the Night is not a platformer. It doesn’t put any emphasis on platforming whatever. You jump a lot but there’s no obstacles and challenges to overcome when you do.
Megaman X then bearly qualifies as one…
