The Platformer Thread: Aaru's Awakening is out!

I just can’t get into Shovel knight. I beat it in one sitting and it was pretty much a breeze. The relic that makes you temporarily invincible breaks the game.

Weird enemy pattern? Relic. Misjumped and spike trap? Relic. Boss? Relic. Plus you get MP pots so frequently tere is no reason not to abuse it.

The game just felt really “meh” to me. Nothing about it gave me that unique feeling. Everything about the game reminded me of another game from the past which just gave off that vibe of “nostalgia for nostalgia” stake and not adding to the actual gameplay. I know I’m going to be the minority in this but I just wasn’t really impressed. It felt like I was playing a really bad Simons Quest Mod but they really loved Ducktales.

I actually thought I beat the game without dying but I died under 5 times and I only bought a small amount of upgrades, mostly magic.

A mix of both, maybe? There’s very few actual enemies and the challenge comes from being all agile and getting around the Princess’s traps. So you puzzle out stuff… by figuring out how to jump/maneuver through it.

Best thing to do is check a YouTube LP of like level 2 or 3. That’ll give you a good idea of the game.

I was actually contemplating getting a psp Vita just to play Gravity Rush…then I heard after paying 200 for the vita I have to buy a 100 dollar 32gb SONY VITA memory card for it and I just looooooooooooool at that notion. fuck outta here Sony with that nonsense. no wonder vita doesn’t sell.
also,
This is what you end up if you mix Cloudbuilt’s art style with Mirror’s Edge gameplay

If you’re only going to play one game why would you buy a 32gig memory card? I bought an 8 gig memory card for like 15 bucks off Amazon. I’ve had my Vita for like two months and haven’t had a need for more space yet. You can get a 16 gig card for 30.

Feel like Vita users sabotage themselves and the system by saying you HAVE to have a 32+ gig card when you don’t, they are just spastic dorks who can’t handle not having all their games with them all the time. Can’t leave shit at home.

That being said, fuck those memory card prices. Shit is downright unfair.

Played cloudbuilt a little bit and it seems really good. Definitely something im going to pick back up down the line. My mouse accuracy is such garbage though. The main reason I havent been playing is because im starting to play Dustforce for real.

If you play on PC and dont mind putting hours into a game and not even leaving the first world to learn the game: buy this game. Its one of the few games that I consider ‘beautiful’. Art style is on point, music sets the tone so far beyond perfect its like its from another dimension, gameplay that rewards learning mechanics, sneaky cool exploration and the replay system fuckin rocks. Get an A on completion? Check the replay to see what you missed. Cant figure out how to get past a tricky part? Watch a guy new your top score with an S in finesse and see what he does. Want to see a guy on a whole different level of skill? Watch the Thor replay that is probably at the top spot of the leaderboards.

Also im working on setting up a race with the WR holder in Volgarr. Im giving him some derusting time so ill post again when we are closer to something concrete.

I just saw this post.

Welp, there goes 10 bucks(when I can spare that much).

delete!

Shovel Knight is really, really good- don’t ruin it by spamming the phase locket, and play through New Game + for a more authentic old school challenge. NG+ doubles damage, stages only have checkpoints halfway and at bosses (Mega Man style), and hidden health items are replaced by bombs. The music alone made the game worth it, the rest being great was even better.

ON STEAM.

I could not get into Sideway. I even had someone over for co-op. Couldn’t get into it.

How’s Papa and Yo?

I only played it for 1 hour. it seemed fine. at least performance, and controls-wise.
I have over 40 steam games and haven’t played completely through the vast majority of them.
i just finished Ys Origin yesterday.
finished it with Yunica and restarted a new game with Hugo.
its a very different playthrough with the male magician compared to the girl ax&sword wielder regarding boss fights.
i’ll let you know when I get around to completing Papa y Yo.

1001 Spikes, Shovel Knight, and Azure Striker: Gunvolt…it’s an awesome year for 3DS owning platformer fans.

Hope WayForward’s TMNT metroidvania isn’t ass like some of their other licensed games.

Yea man. Contra 4 was a piece of shit.

I actually gotta agree with Zoo(!) that sometimes WayForward’s style doesn’t always mesh well.
That said, I am cautiously optimistic that it will be a good game.

That said, can a brotha get the classic TMNT NES games on the 3DS eShop, please? I want to play TMNT 3: The Manhattan Project on the go.

There are couple of WayForward games I disliked. The aforementioned Contra 4 and Double Dragon Neon awful. WayForward has done more good than bad so I look forward to whatever projects they have.

I did like the Melissa Joan Hart show.

Oh god, WayForward developed WWE Betrayal and the Silent Hill diablo clone? WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!?

I’m curious to know which one you guys liked more Shovel Knight or Azure Striker: Gunvolt? I assume everyone who owns one also owns the other lol.

Eh, I feel like Shovel Knight is a more coherent and well-rounded game, but Gunvolt has very innovative mechanics(save for Prevasion scumming). Shovel Knight also has an easier to follow story(if you care for that) and better musical score.

Shovel Knight could stand alone and hold up well over time. I feel Gunvolt needs a sequel to really show off what the mechanics are capable of, much like Mega Man to Mega Man 2.
