And if we are mixing both lists together for platformers I can’t live without:
Shinobi 3
Mario 64
Battle Block Theater
(As time goes on) Shovel Knight
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
These are all soley off the joy of the platforming. So while I LOVE games like Klonoa 2, Mega Man X5, and Bionic Commando (3D) these above games make my thumbs scream for joy as soon as I hit start.
Reading through Sonic 3 Complete it seems these guys restored what was originally planned for the game. Stuff like putting Flying Battery in-between Carnival Night and Ice Cap
Megaman X
Absolute perfection IMO music, exploration, combat, jumping, dashing, wall cling. It’s one of the few games I’d ever give a 10/10. For years I thought I was a Megaman fan but truthfully I’m really not, I’m a Megaman X fan I put this game far above anything else out of this franchise.
2)Sonic 2
Dude I don’t even wanna explain this its the platformer thread should be self explainatory
3)Metroid Fusion
I’m anything but a story/atmosphere stan but this game had the atmosphere. SA-X was scarier to me than Dark Samus in Prime part of it was because theres the instant connection “I’m a weaker me this thing is a clone of me at my best” I felt like there was a whole Alien Vibe going on for it and that mixed with the classic Metroid formula made for one of those platformers you wanna finish in one sitting
4)NSMBWii
I know people like to hate on this game for whatever reason but It’s like my favorite Mario. I like all the suits, I liked the controls, the levels, the simultaneous 4 player, its the total package for me. I haven’t got to play much of NSMBU but hey it might could take this spot
5)Super Mario 3d world
I would put this higher if I had more time with it, there was not one minute I was playing of this game where there was not a smile on my face, its everything I like about NSMBWii but in 3d.
I almost put NSMBWii as one of mine too. I think it really aestheticslly captures the essence of the original Super Mario Bros games, especially SMB1. It’s got fantastic level design and the introduction of simultaneous multilayer Mario was a huge hit. I spent many hours playing this one. I remember a buddy of mine and I spent an entire night exploring all kinds of different places to get infinite 1-ups. NSMB for DS was pretty awesome, but I feel like Wii took it to the next level and stands out as the best of the New series.
Just finished Shovel Knight. Its good, man. Everything was just super solid. Gameplay was tight, even though I hated the sliding Shovel Knight does when trying to stop I know it was a part of the plan so I can deal with it. Music and sound effects were really good, just really good. Getting the powered up slash felt really good. Plus the story was told really well. Like I feel like I need to put something in spoilers… for a platformer that isn’t a metroidvania
Spoiler
After killing the Shield Knight Enchantress I was so fuckin hype to catch her. That was really cool.
Definitely lived up to the hype. Can’t wait to play the other characters.
That looks cool. It kind of looks like Teslagrad a little bit to me. By that standard it seems a little more puzzle-y than I like usually from the trailer. Can you confirm/deny? Does it lean more action or puzzle?
