The PC gaming Thread. Steam/GOG/Origin/Etc. Game/Software/Hardware talk

If it wasn’t for that message in the beginning, I would be seriously convinced this is an official trailer for HL3.

Half Life 3 Confirmed!

Titanfall thread seems to be lost to the winds, so I’ll just leave this here.

MotionInJoy+BetterDS3=any fucking controller I want on PC.

I use a DS4 with a Xinput wrapper. It’s bless.

I use a wired 360 controller - got it for 15 bucks. Its tits.

If I’m never going to SLI, a 650 psu should do me fine for a long time, right? I want to get rid of my XION psu before I put in a decent gpu.

I ask, because right now a gold certified 650w psu and a bronze 750w are the same price on newegg. (corsair TX and HX respectively)

I wish there was something on steam that I could throw my steambucks at, I see all this neat stuff on PSN that I would throw my steambux at but they’re stuck on steam.

C’est la vie.

My PC:
AMD FX 4300
Asus M5A97-R2 mobo
8GB
ATI Radeon HD7700
…and a 650W supply.
It works!

How many steambucks you got? I hear Cloudbuilt is quite lovely

Nothing says “Survival Horror” like having tons of ammo, a suit of armor, psychic powers and curb stomping your enemies.

Thinking of upgrading my pc.
Currently Have

Intel i7-4770k @3.4 ghz
EVGA GTX 660 2gb
8gb Ram
2tb harddrive
Windows 7 64 bit.
DVD Drive(I think RW…I barely ever use it for anything except for the occasional movie and ripping CD’s).

No idea what kind of power supply is in there.
Using an external usb audio card to jury rig a couple of speakers to my set up.
Its all hooked up to my tv via HDMI, random microsoft wireless mouse +keyboard.

I’m wondering what I should upgrade next. I’m basically looking for better performance. Kind of leaning towards more RAM. I’ve had an SSD suggested…but they seem awfully pricey for the amount of storage you get. I’d rather save up a bit more and get a better videocard. Or just get more storage for my…video…collection. Maybe an external drive. Also kind of want a blu ray reader so I don’t have to get up and change the disks in my ps3 when I want to watch something.

This doesn’t look like my cup of tea…

Pulled the trigger. $99 with a $20 mail in rebate, so in the end $79. Pretty happy with that find.

I’m going to also say get a SSD. All you really need is an amount big enough for the OS and a few essential apps. All the rest of your files (video’s, etc.) that you rarely use you can dump on your HDD. I think you’re going to notice a bigger improvement in performance speed (boot speed especially) on an SSD than just getting more RAM.

@Kromo All you need is a new video card+an SSD.

Your PC is already pretty good, especially your processor. Depending what you use your PC for, another 8GB of RAM won’t do anything for you, especially when it comes to gaming. No games use that much.

Your GPU should still run most games on full with no problems, but since you want better performance, a beefier GPU+an SSD is the way to go. $200-500 on a new GPU and you can ride out the rest of the generation with that current setup. Personally, I’d wait a bit longer for the “hardware refresh” that’s about to happen to PC’s this year it’s looking like then go from there. There are very few games I can think of off the top of my head that would give a 660 any trouble, even now.

A SSD would be your best bet if you want to upgrade something now. A 660 is still a viable card for the time being.

I’d say SSD now and a 20 nm maxwell later this year (maybe?). That’s what I’m holding out for myself.

So the jump from 8 to 16 gb of ram wouldn’t make much of a difference?

How easy is it to configure windows to boot from an SSD? Ideally I would not like to have to reinstall everything. The various guides I’ve looked at make it seem like a hassle. And it’s not like it takes forever for my computer to boot anyway. Like a minute or so.
Having looked at my computer some more…about half of the 2 tb is various videos, and maybe 750 gb is games. This is kind of making me feel like an external hard drive is a good choice (or at least, a no-effort solution). This 3tb for 109 on newegg is looking pretty attractive.

As an added bonus I could use it to back up my files should I decide to try and mess around with a SSD and fuck everything up.

Probably will get a new gpu some time down the line.

I don’t have one personally installed, If you have the money an ssd is definetly worth the investment. My friends computer had some seriously crazy boot time when he had it installed.

@Kromo Yeah, more RAM is overkill. I can’t think of anything that eats up that much RAM, unless you’re into some crazy-ass programs or something. No game requires that much, and nothing during basic PC use will ever use that much RAM. Boot some random game(s) up and check task manager, or open a shitload of browser windows and see. You have to put in effort to try and use up that RAM.

One thing to keep in mind is that your 7400 RPM drive is already faster than the HDD’s in a PS3/360/PS4/Xbone etc. No idea why the new consoles aren’t using 7400 RPM drives for quicker load times, but at least with the PS3/PS4 you have the option to toss in your own. One thing that’s spoiled me with PC gaming is how fast load times are compared to console, and I don’t have an SSD.

Only games that can test a GTX 660 off the top of my head is Battlefield 4, Crysis 3 and maybe the Metro games. 99% of the games on the market should run @ 1080p/60FPS with that rig otherwise. So, imo, wait it out for the new hardware coming this year, then go from there in what you want to buy, since everything out now will get its prices slashed. SSD’s are an awesome investment, but one thing to keep in mind is that they only have an X amount of times they can read/write from the HDD before they crap out, whereas with your average HDD can potentially take longer for them to fail.

“Hybrid” drives are pretty cool too, in that they’re better than your basic HDD’s, but slower than SSD’s. Thing is they’re a lot cheaper than SSD’s, so there’s that.

not unless you’re playing ARMA, a flight sim, or are editing video.

i’m not on a gaming computer, but i RAID 0’ed two old ADATA SSDs. the speed blows regular HDD out of the water, and it still isn’t as fast as a single Crucial M4 SSD.
