From my understanding the hertz is basically the frame rate. With a 144hz monitor you can run games up to 144 frames per second. If you higher or lower it won’t effect anything. For example I have a 100hz monitor. I can play games at a higher framerate but I’ll only really see 100 fps.
Ah, ok. Yeah I don’t think of even be able to notice anything at more than 60 fps, not to mention 144 lol.
PC gaming is a mental illness. It’s like cars but for nerds. You don’t need anything near the amount of power that people will claim you need. I think most people are perfectly fine with 1080p/60. My gaming laptop is a 2-3 year old HP Omen and I’ve barely used it (only use it on vacation) but it seemed to run modern games just fine. Not at max settings but close enough and it has a 1060. I was going to boot up Destiny and check the settings but I deleted all of big games off it for some reason. I did look on youtube and saw this video:
If Destiny 2 is and games of that caliber are what you’re looking for you can probably buy 700-900 dollar laptop and be happy. Possibly cheaper if you don’t mind refurbished laptops.
Damn, that looks way better than PS4 as far as performance goes. Only flaw was that dude was using a Warlock instead of a Titan
Trust me you will notice and it won’t just be for games. Doing basic PC tasks will feel far more responsive, snappy and it will reduce ghosting if you notice that kind of thing.
Not if your playing competitive games like CS:GO, Overwatch, Rocket League where the more frames the better. Gotta squeeze every itch of competitive advantage.
I mean no offense but i always feel.like that’s the kind of shit said by people who suck lol.

I’m not super impressed by higher resolution graphics anymore- the wow factor wears off real fast and it doesn’t make the game experience any better (often worse if your graphics card is struggling).
Faster refresh rate reduces my eye strain by a LOT though. Makes that shit like butter for the eyes.
But a 144Hz screen should be more than ample yeah? That’s more than twice as fast as 60fps. I should be OK with the 144 Hz monitor?
Yea maybe. I mean why not right?
That’s plenty ample. The monitor I use is 144Hz.
@chadouken This. What you put into PC gaming is what you’ll get out of it.
@MARTIAN Built a “budget” rig recently and he loves it. He slams most games he throws at it, and based on his posts he’s just loving the PC experience overall.
If you’re serious about building a rig buy a x550 motherboard, a 750-850w PSU(you need this much for the beefiest cards) a case and the best RAM you can get for a Ryzen processor. In a week or two, AMD is releasing the Ryzen 4000 lineup, and at the end of October they’re releasing their RDNA2 graphics cards which are powering the PS5 and suXbox. If you wait and play it smart, you can get a Ryzen 4000 processor combined with either an NVidia 3000 series GPU or one of AMD’s new cards(which sound super beefy.)
Oh yeah, 144HZ monitors are pretty affordable these days. Basic Acer/Asus ones are like 200ish. There are also 244HZ++ monitors out there, and I think a new one by NVidia that hits what…300+ HZ or something dumb? Hahaha.
Yeah man, like, I’ll have to upgrade eventually for this new Gen to get the performance I want but, right now I’m able to max out 95% of my games. New ones and old.
I understand you want portability, but instead of a laptop have you just considered a more compact computer case @chadouken? My buddy has a 2080/ Ryzen 5 3700 setup for his rig (which is currently one of the best video cards and processor on the market) and his is about the size of an OG Xbox One. It’s a very small case, makes me jelly that I got a huge ass one with way too much extra space. But my point is you can put together some surprisingly compact and portable builds, and I also think you’ll get better performance and more customization than a laptop in the long run. It’s also just much cheaper on average.
PS4/PS5 and the suXboxes are closed platform PC’s. I wish I didn’t like physical as much as I did because it’d make it easier to mainly game on PC instead.
It’s my favorite and preferred platform of this generation and it’s 1000% looking to be the same way next-gen.
My brojer built a new rig recently and he loves it. He hasn’t touched his PS4 Pro since. If you do build one it’ll be interesting to hear your experience with it.
Yeah man, I was considering going for a desktop PC, but my wife and I just started a side hustle and I need a laptop to work on when TDY. Down the road, after I get acquainted with PC gaming, I will definitely revisit it and get a dedicate gaming machine. But right now, I could finagle my wife into letting me get a laptop that I can also use to play games on. Its primary function will be for work though.
That said, I think I did ok with an Asus equipped with an RTX 2070 Max Q. I know it’s the mobile version of the 2070, but from what I’ve learned it can handle games like Destiny and Rocket League at a decent fps, and that’s all I’m really looking to do with it for now.
I also have the PS5 on lock, and between that and the laptop I should have my gaming needs pretty much covered for now. I also have an infant daughter whom I will be giving more and more of my free time, so it’s gonna be tough to keep up with my gaming hobby
So… Would the new Star Wars Squadrons game coming out soon be a good way to test drive the new PC?
Yes. Star Wars is a good game to test out you laptop muscle.
Razer released a wireless mechanical keyboard and it’s $230. Why the fuck does it have to cost so much?
@Chadouken Buy a 200ish dollar Acer or Asus 144HZ monitor, then plug your laptop into it. Play Destiny and Rocket League @ full settings @ a 144hz and 1440p.
Fuck yeah, I got a 27 inch Asus at 144Hz and 1ms of lag to go with the laptop. It’ll all get delivered tomorrow.
@Chadouken Awww shiiiiiiiiiet. I look forward to hearing your impressions good sir.
Counter-Strike: GO is free as well as Quake Champions. This also releases tomorrow:
