The Outrageous Newbie Thread (ASK YOUR QUESTIONS HERE)

Im straight new to Street fighter. I have no expirence. I have a buddy who is been playing for a while,
Ive known him for about 5 years online now. Hes pretty good but he isnt going to show me anything. I need
to learn everything. I need help major, from picking a team to just learning combos.

Add my gamertag: Sleazyness. The more help, the better.

Thanks much love.

Hi, I’m pretty new to SF and although I’m alright with the moves that involve Down + Forward, I have no idea how to pull off the attacks that involve holding back + forward, without telegraphing my attack. I was told that the best way to do the latter attacks is to be holding back, whilst doing an entirely separate attack. I’m confused by this, can anyone elaborate on this or link me to a guide?

Taking sonic boom as example, you can charge backwards while doing punches, then push forward and punch again

Voila sonic boom

Can someone tell me the requirements to become a Grand Master (as opposed to just Master). Obviously you need at least 30,000BP. I’ve heard there is a minimum ranked win percentage you need to have but I am not sure.

Are there any guide video’s for the new characters?

can someone explain what fortitude gems do in comparison to iron wall and life force. Which are better in which circumstances? Thanks in advance,

Iron wall gems cut incoming damage by the % indicated from their start to their end, think of them as providing extra damage scaling. Fortitude gems have a maximum threshold that they prevent when active (ex. Lv.1 is 100dmg), and after that even when flashing do nothing.
9 times out of 10 Fortitude gems are superior to Iron Wall. If you do the math, you need to take 1000 dmg during iron wall lv 1 for it to do as much as Fortitude Lv.1. Iron wall can have its uses, specifically some of the paid dlc ones, but as a rule of thumb they are inferior.
Life Force and harmonize restore life that is already gone. They generally do a lesser amount than fortitude, since they guarantee the health back whereas fortitude is a potential negation.

Best time to use them is wherever their activation is easiest and fully used. For life gain, things like “get hit by two specials” is incredibly likely. With fortitude, it needs to activate at a time when the opponent is still hitting you afterward: “combo of 5 hits” is the most common one.

Any news when the full balance patch will be out (will there ever be one?)

There are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Holding down and back will also charge the move, so you can do them without needing to walk backwards.
  2. Holding back while doing normal attacks does not change the attacks, so you can do so while doing a combo, then do forward+button to do the move in the combo. Look at combos for one such character or do trial mode for specific examples.
  3. Whenever you jump with these characters, hold back down or both to charge the move, allowing you to do it immediately when you land and not telegraph it.
  4. If you want to spam a charge move, like Sonic Boom, you can hold back again immediately after doing the move (he is still throwing the boom out) for faster charging.

So, if raw launchers crush lows, does this include cr. jab/strong/fierce as well?

Also, not sure if this is the right place to ask, but what do you guys think about the DLC gems? I want to improve my Elena/Jin team with them but my current options look a little limited.

Not every low can be launched if the opponent isn’t considered crouching on active frames. If I try to launch Rufus out of Glory Kick for example which hits lows, it won’t work cause according to the game, he isn’t crouching when using this. They crush anything crouching, it doesn’t matter if it is even a mid.

No, they only go through attacks that hit low, so cr. jab would hit em out of it. It’s very fun against cr. lk-happy opponents.

Tbh I wouldn’t know much about the gems, but the fact you use elena is pretty neat.

You can see what the gems are before you buy them, so it is up to you which ones you think are worth it and which are not. Honestly, the majority of them are useless and it pisses me off you have to buy them twice essentially, but a number of them are pretty unique and useful. I think Elena cannot afford to get too creative with gems, she needs all the extra health she can.

Hello,
I’m deeply sorry if someone already asked this. I’m wondering where I could find information for newbies ?

I play fighting games for 3 months now, I’m obviously still totally bad, I can’t find a char that I like in SSF4 or even UMVC but I really like SxT because of the tag thing and I like the whole cast. The problem is, I don’t have any good habits from fighting games, I don’t know how to train and what to train, I feel kinda lost. I know this could go in the Newbie section of the forum, but I think it must be some SxT specifics things and I wanted to tell you something about the “Not a lot of people like SxT nor want to get into it” :
Maybe if there were more ressources for people who want to start playing it, you’d get more players. I know it’s a hard work and that you don’t want crying babies who can’t figure how to play by themselves, but it just help, and helping people is the core of a community, if I can learn enough things and be good enough to be an intermediate player, I think I’ll start writing guides or developing a website for people who want to learn.

I’ll ask a more specific questions if there isn’t any place I can have information without asking people :
What should I train and in what order if I want to be able to have interesting match in SxT (to be honest linking normal is still hard for me, so are long combo like 16+ trials, but I don’t know if that is the more important thing to know) ?

Thanks in advance,

Li Chi

That’s what I did from the beginning of my SFxT career

  1. Learn the controls
  • movement: forward, back, jump, crouch, dash
  • punches and kicks
  • Specials: motions: qcf, qcb, hcf, hcb, srk, 360 — charge motions
  • tags
  • supers
  • cross supers
  • (skip) pandora
  1. Learn the basics
  • How to play
  • possibilities: chaining, linking, canceling.
  1. combos
  • learn how to do chain-combos
  • learn how to do link-combos
  • learn how to punish
  1. execution
  • one of the most important parts here. get this stuff down, seriously.
  1. characters
  • choose your favorite
  • train his key moves
  • learn combos
  1. enemies
  • learn their habits
  • know the weak spots of the chars
  1. advanced
  • footsies
  • pressure
  • resets
  • ambigous crossups
  • reading you opponent

you can carry almost everything you’ve learned from previous fighting games to sfxt but there still is plenty stuff to get into.

uff… what characters are you playing? It’s probably easier to give advice with that knowledge

Thanks a lot for this fast answer !
I’ll follow these steps. I think I’ve already done the 1. and 2., but I’m not sure I understand what you mean by learning how to punish ?
For me, punishing is doing the best damage possible when an opponent’s move whiff or is blocked (for a high negative on block move), isn’t it closely related to the character I’m playing ? or can I learn that as a general stuff?

I didn’t chose a final character but I really like Julia because of her stylish moves, Steve because of his swift boxer style, Xiaoyu I don’t know why but she seems hard to use (because of her stances), Sakura and Akuma too. Yeah I know it’s a lot, but I’ll chose two as soon as I decide how to train them. By the way I don’t know how to optimize a team composition and I don’t even know if it’s important : p

Thanks again.

The answer lies in your question  punishing with the most damage possible is general but also character specific

What I actually mean is: avoid punishing moves with ABC-Launcher. Well, it’s not really a bad thing, still better than doing nothing at all but link combos will always do more damage without spending meter.

or if they are gonna punish with a abc chain, don’t do the whole thing, a raw launcher or a normal hit confirm to launcher will do more damage =)

Thanks : )

(Yeah I know I ask a lot of question, but I suppose it could be useful to other people as well)

So, something like s. HP >> HP+HK will do more damage than LP >> MP >> HP >> HP+HK ? Thanks to damage reduce ?
