I remember you fooling around with 98 at CEO for about 5 minutes and I don’t think you’ll have much trouble at all. About the most significant difference between 98 and XI (besides, of course, the absence of tagging and anywhere-juggles) is the stricter input detection in '98 (liberalized for '98 UM), and once you get a feel for that, the rest of the game is basically CvS2 N-Groove at double speed.
There’s a shitton of characters in '98 and most of them don’t suck, so fire up an emulator, put the ROM on home mode, open up a movelist and see who you like. From what I saw you seem like you’d do well with Chizuru, she has good pokes, a strong pressure/zoning game with her rush punches, a DP, a strong super juggle (that also really hurts grapplers because it seals special moves), and of course if you want to get flashy there’s lots of fun stuff to do with her clone super.
If somebody hosts on the weekend, I can bring my 360 or my new PS2 slim and play '98 UM on either one (which also comes with an internally emulated version of OG '98). As for GGPO, I haven’t touched it in a long time, but I mentioned it since hosting is so prohibitive where KOF is concerned. But if you can make a weekend hosting sometime (like Friday/Saturday, which I almost always show up for) that would be really great. I really want to get people back into this because KOF XIII looks like the best KOF since XI.
