It feels weird looking at my copy of FF9 and being able to say that it’s truly “old school”
I remember getting it and being happy with how it referenced the old school compared to 7 and 8

Im not going to pretend like im really old or anything, but I did start gaming on the Sega Mega Drive II when I was 3 My beloved console got given away without my consent (Honestly I dont hold a grudge o_O’ )
If I remember back then my fave games included Sonic 3 (Since my sister could play as tails)
Pehlios, Alien storm and Alladin lol.
On another note I never played the early BoF games but I have played Breathe of fire IV on Ps1 (Which also got given away into undeserving hands) and that has probs been my fave RPG game ever… maybe
*Infact I bought a ps2 just so I could play it again!
Breath of Fire is probably my third favorite RPG series. The first one was rough around the edges, but 2, 3, 4 were amazing. And 5 was really good too, but it was very off-putting at first. Think of it like Dead Rising RPG. Actually, the team that did BoF5 went on to make Dead Rising.
Yer I know what you mean.
I didn’t get a ps2 till pretty late since I made the switch to xbox, and by the time I found BoF5 it was old and different so I didnt put the time into it.
I refuse to accept PSX as old school.
Didn’t know Willy Beamish had a version on PC with voice acting, interesting.
I liked Arkanoid, but no way could I play NES version after being introduced to it on the Amiga
First system: Vic-20. Quality Atari game knock offs. Fuck Circus Atari- we had Clowns. PAC-man? Commodore Cruncher.
I always come back to NES (non-Tengen) Tetris. No other version is as good. The music and everything was perfect.
i use to play my turbo duo all the time.
i bought all the games i have on it for the wii virtual console now tho so i dont have to take it out anymore.
y’s 1 and 2 and gate and lords of thunder ftw
i have a Saturn that’s in need of games to play. waiting for dat paycheck.
I may be in the minority here but I think we can officially classify the PSX-era as old school. I wouldn’t say it’s golden age, that’d be the 16-bit era, but I definitely think it’s old school. You have to keep in mind that the PlayStation came out in 1994! That’s 17 years ago, some people on this forum weren’t even born! I understand what you’re saying, the 32-bit systems (and N64) introduced us to the 3D world we still play in today, but go back and take a look at Battle Arena Toshinden or those early games, at this point, even though it makes us feel even older, PSX/N64/Saturn has to be considered old school.
The PC Beamish with voice acting is a gem, the only thing that stopped the game from being a classic on the Sega CD was the loading times and that version cleared them up. And I have to find this Amiga Arkanoid, as long as I have infinite men I could play that thing nonstop.
Wonder Boy 3 all up in this bitch.
Seriously, that game is awesome.
My favorite games of all time:
Shadowrun (Genesis)
Final Fantasy II (I dont give a damn if it’s ff4 in japan, it was II here damnit)
Street Fighter II. Yep.
Shining Force (Genesis. If you didnt know that already, slap yourself)
Phantasy Star IV
StarFox
MegaBomberMan
Light Crusader
Balls to that, it’s all about the superior Dragon’s Curse on TurboGraphx (aka Wii Virtual Console).
daaaaaaaaaamn i hadnt even thought of that… 17 years ago… wow. okay, if we can include the PSX, gotta throw in some tekken 3, resident evil 2, final fantasy 7, etc etc…
I’m not gunna lie i was slizzurred many a night playing crash bandicoot. Listening to white zombie. now i feel old.
i just went looking through my games…
MERCs
Final Fight
7th Saga
Breath of Fire
YSIII (props if you know that gem)
AvP old school capcom arcade game>both AvP movies
Suikoden… BAM
i guess you can split gaming into 3 eras. The Atari age, the narrative age (video games that have an ending) popularized by Nintendo, and the era ushered in by 3D and PlayStation and FPS. So 90s gaming is still old and a lot has changed in 15+ years, but it’s still tied to what we’re playing today.
First, LOL GameFAQs, second, that refers to hardware updates not drastic changes in gameplay/design.
Well yeah… I agree with that… 3 Eras it is.
Oh shit, anyone remember Wizardry IV? I broke the shit outta some controllers over that.
