Just wanted to drop by real quick and say thank you to those who recommended Sonic & All-Stars Racing. I haven’t had time to play it as much as I would like, but what I’ve been able to do so far has been fun!
I wish lol.
I really enjoy the earlier Mario Party games…and I endorse this message thumbs up and smile
This reminds me…I’m checking out the Miiverse boards and it looks like Sega released a patch that adjusted some things on the tracks AND fixed the boost challenge glitch. Good job Sega. I will probably be playing this online for a bit so if you want some games, let me know.
For me personally it’s going to be kind of hard to say on this since I know exactly what that ‘New’ line is for. It’s pretty much a solid 2D mario platformer that takes some ideas from 3 and World with the usual ‘ok’ overall soundtrack. The new Squirrel suit power up is the replacement for the raccoon tail and I’m pretty much ‘meh’ on it since all it really makes me want to do is find a Raccoon Leaf. It’s not a bad powerup by any means…it just feels like it’s lacking a bit. I do dig the fact that it gives a sort of ‘double jump’ that has been usedin some interesting ways to get star coins here and there. When I"m doing the ninja run with Mario at full speed and there’s enemies in the way I kinda wish the Squirrel Suit had an offensive option other than just having the ability to glide.
Something else that I’m just not realizing that I miss is the ability to actually kick items upward. I don’t know why this ability was removed from a 2D mario in the first place since you could use the koopa shells to reach items and it could have been used as a way to get hard to reach coins.
Difficulty is middle ground so far…there’s going to be some stages where You’ll find all 3 star coins easily and some where they did a good job hiding them. Then you have that secret world to beat and the challenges so if you’re a Mario master and you just blast through the 1 player then you still have stuff you can do plus there will be DLC. I haven’t quite finished the game yet though so I want to see how far the difficulty ramps in the 8th world.
Overall it’s just a good solid 2D Mario game…it’s not perfect and it’s not going to live up to 3 or World and if you can live with that then you’ll find the game enjoyable. If you find the 2D Mario games to be quick cash ins then you’re not going to enjoy it and you’re not going to want to pay $60 for it.
Edit:
Nintendo just had another random Mini Japanese Direct…They announced a Nico Nico App for it.
Edit 2:
Sonic Racing Transformed seems to be moving quite steadily upward in terms of attention…It’s almost broke 10,000 on the count. NintendoLand is over 100,000…good lord. Mario is second and is still 40,000 away from that.
Van Damne just got done playing tug of war.
No quantum leaps this time around. The problem is twofold:
-
Back when consoles were first released, PCs were not yet mainstream thereby posing little competition to the makers. Now, not only are PCs mainstream, but they can be had with better hardware cheaper than what a typical console costs. I can build a PC that for $500 that would blow away the PS4/X720. The purpose of owning a console back then was to reproduce the arcade experience at home. Well … arcades are dead for the most part in North America.
-
Due to the economical and physical limitations, it will be near impossible to build a reasonably priced console that can come anywhere close to what a PC with a decent gfx card can accomplish. Why? Higher performance means more power/heat generated (and we’ve seen what happens when that’s not properly accounted for; i.e. Microsoft’s X360 1st and 2nd generation consoles). In a PC, this isn’t so bad because you a have a huge case for additional fans, and the capacity to add liquid cooling etc to deal with such issues. For a console, there’s way less space and therefore heat cannot dissipate as quickly as it can in a PC case.
So the console makers have a choice, they can make a console the size of a PC case (no way this would happen) to deal with the heat issues **or **use cutting edge (expensive) chips that can perform more efficiently generating less heat and consuming less power.
In simpler terms: “Powerful, Cheap, Efficient … Choose two” Those are the decisions confronting console makers. Because of the above limitations, I don’t think any one console is going to completely dominate in terms of graphical abilities without costing a boat load of money.
In a way, Nintendo has shoehorned Microsoft and Sony into a corner. Nintendo not only released a console that is considerably more powerful than the current generation, but did it at a price point $200-300 cheaper than what the current consoles retailed for at release. So now, Microsoft/Sony must make a console that blows away the Wii U and their current consoles, but do it as a much cheaper price point than even the current generation. Not only that, but Nintendo has once again done something that neither of its competitors have done … being 100% backwards compatible. I mean, not just games … but all the peripherals for the Wii works on the Wii U. There’s no way the PS4/Xbox 720 will be BC because the architecture is totally different (and I mean night and day). One of the few little known facts about the Wii. It was a powerful console technically speaking. Had Nintendo not have made some foolish decisions such as opting against HD (even though Wii’s hardware could handle it even better than the X360 and PS3), the Wii could have been dominant like the PS2 was instead of merely being dominant in hardware sales.
I’d like to disagree with this unless you can provide me with an answer to a question I asked during Wii’s time in the sun…How come there wasn’t anything as graphically intensive as Doom 3 on Xbox when Wii was at least a tad bit more powerful than it?
It’s just nobody tried. Why bother? When an decent art style can work better in a developers favor than pushing the system. or why bother when the other two systems have better hardware.
The Doom 3 source code is available to everyone fell free to port it to what ever system.
I wish it wasn’t, main reason I got wii u was for the innovation and nintendos recent history of RPGs hopefully being applied to the gamepad in future releases. I want either 720/4 to be powerful and include virtual reality or I might not be touching them at all. Augmented reality is very unlikely till next next gen and will probably thrive on mobile
been watching game grumps play nintendoland and i have to say it looks pretty effing fun
especially if you’re playing multiplayer
I feel that in Nintendo Land the player with the Gamepad has too big an advantage. That’s how it feels to me at least with one player on Gamepad and 2 on remotes might be different with more players.
Am I the only one that thinks that the Pikmin series was brutally unforgiving back then? Especially because of the dungeons where you’re not likely to restock pikmins too often and then there’s like 20 or so floors to endure through with a boss in the end?
I never got to finish either one as a kid. Though I did get through Master Class in F-Zero GX. God I hope they make a sequel to that game.
30+ players online play would be a laggy ass blast.
In ghost mansion? I would say nah because unless you’re wasting your torch it’s pretty easy to fish out the ghost due to the rumbling. mario chase is understandable because it would be a pretty lame mode otherwise but taking corners sharply and the fact gamepad player runs slightly slower it shouldn’t be a problem. Haven’t played animal crossing yet
Looking back. I love how the original Mario Party prepared me for what was in store, playing Resident Evil 6.
Every QTE took me back! Thanks Nintendo.

AVGN Talks about his fond memories of playing Mario Kart. He says Mario Kart, like Mario Party, is a game for assholes who get to be assholes to each other. “An asshole game.”
What other games like these two where the whole point of the game is pretty much to be the biggest dick possible? I mean games where it’s encouraged, unlike things like griefing in other games. Marvel, maybe? Infinites! Unblockables! Unsee-able mixups and cross-ups!
I was afraid you would say that. I think expecting any modern mario game to be as half as good as SMW let alone SMB3 is being unrealistic because that level of GDLK is rare to find, but no true self respecting mario fan really liked NSMB1 or 2 let alone paid full price for them. They were functional and maybe even mildly enjoyable in parts but they were clearly made with no effort or thought beyond “let’s insert generic stages that trick casual gamers into thinking it’s classic mario”. By mario standards and indie platformer standards the new games are poorly designed imitations of the real thing for the wii audience but not core gamers:sad:
I guess nintendo don’t care they are punishing mario fans who believe in standards of quality as long as they are makig dat paypuh.
I will be getting the Wii U mainly for Rayman, Bayo 2, the other P+ game, and Monster Hunter.
I enjoyed NSMB1 but that’s mostly because I enjoyed it for what it was. I’m not really expecting OMG GREATNESS from the 2D titles…I just want solid 2D platformer and it does that. The higher standards I reserve for the 3D titles since Miyamoto seems to have more of a hand in those.
There aren’t many 2D platformers around that everyone can play and still enjoy (I’m talking about mid dificulty overall while still retaining challenge in areas without making the average schmo rage quit within the first 2 levels). Level Design is going to be hit and miss with some people for this series but I think with U the new guys are starting to get their grip on things. The new guard still has much to learn from the old guard though…
If there’s anything about NSMBU that I find the most disappointing…it’s the soundtrack to be honest. I’m looking at thecredits for this game now and I’m kinda finding it hard for me to believe that Mahito had a hand in it. There are a few that stand out (Baby Yoshi singing to the music is cute) but most of it has been reused since the first New with slight arrangement adjustments here and there or better quality synth instruments. Most of it just isn’t as catchy as Kondo’s earlier work though…then again though like you said that’s probably an instance where I’m probably expecting too much…Kondo’s shoes are quite large.
In either case these games are to give a game to the crowd that only enjoyed 2D Mario games back in the day AND everyone else. There are people who just can’t wrap their minds around controlling a character in 3D space…trust me they exist. I’ve told a few people how awesome Galaxy is and they bring it back in a couple days saying it’s too hard. They don’t want to learn shrugs.
Your entitled to your opinion it’s no better or worse than any other and I do respect it. That being said, a part of me thinks it’s disgusting and laughable you allow yourself to have lowered expectations for a mario title. The franchise is gaming’s most iconic and has the longest track record when it comes to quality and innovation so the template for a modern 2d mario that doesn’t suck is as clear to nintendo as can be. Because of this pattern of success there is no valid excuse for nintendo to trot out titles like NSMB1 and 2 which indisputably exemplify an emphasis on profits rather than a yearning to please the consumer. Your tacit approval of nintendo turning “e-sports” is offensive to me as a fan of quality games and as a video game nerd.
The balancing act between pleasing both casual and core gamers is a very tight rope to walk and sometimes depending on the property and genre no middle ground exists. However, as with any art form not just video games the tunnel vision emphasis to please everyone inevitably results in a watered down product. Trust me there are plenty of accessible platformers thanks to the indie scene uprising but even if there wasn’t such a reality should not constitute an acceptance of an inferior product. Gaming quality is always super subjective and I’m no expert on game design, but I do know that level design especially in platformers can be definitively analyzed as effective or not objectively. If I was inclined to do so I could point out countless fundamental flaws in the layout of NSMB1’s levels that have no justification existing as they currently do.
If by “these” you’re referring to the “new” line of mario games than I have to disagree. I don’t have any hard numbers to prove this point but I’m willing to bet any amount of money and my right testicle that the overwhelming majority of og mario fans did not buy and/or did not think NSMB1 or 2 were enjoyable. The vast majority of NSMB sales probably came from parents buying it for their kids who are too young to discern quality, or uninformed casual gamers who automatically associate mario with quality. Hell, we have thousands of og mario fans on SRK and I doubt you would be able to find more than a small handful that liked NSMB. I do plan on buying a wiiu after a heavy price drop and I hope mariou is at least better than the other 2.
Maybe I’m giving Nintendo too much credit but I don’t think they are so stupid they actually believe that the “new” games are what og fans actually want.
shut up and take my pokos
