The Official Wii U thread V.1.1 - Sun Sets on Wii U, Switch Over In March

What will it cost the “consumer”, the “developer”, and the gaming industry as a whole.

There is a firmware update guys

It can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours apparently…and I believe I’m in the latter for that since I’ve been downloading it for some time now and it’s halfway through. I haven’t really had too many problems with the Wii U but it did do a hard lock up once. This update should supposedly restabalize what the day 1 update destabalized as well as make loading things overall faster. Get to updating when you’re not using it and go do something else would be my suggestion but I’d do this ASAP.

Edit:…interesting…looks like there’s a 3DS firmware update as well…

Edit 2: I just finished the update…It’d definitely noticably faster in areas. Usually it takes the Wii U like what…20 seconds start up on average? That’s been pretty much cut in half now. Especially noticable is the time it takes between selecting your profile and the small thinking process it use to go through as it was loading up miiverse. I also poked around to test some other areas like pulling up miiverse, and pulling up a game, pulling up netflix and they definitely seem to load a bit faster in varying degrees (I remember NSMBWU would load after the little song ditty played and there was a pause of a few seconds of silence…now the game comes up near the tail end of the music). Again…dl this update ASAP.

Also looks like Wii U demos are starting to finally show up in the eshop…Fifa Demo is up for NA. It also apparently has that play limit that demos on the 3DS have…if they’re like the ones on the 3DS it really isn’t an issue to just delete it and re download the demo if you haven’t had your fill yet.

Ubisoft…Where’s my Rayman Legends demo? I wanna ‘whoa black betty’ in my own house ya know?

Also reading stuff in the Gaf forum about the update

Apparently when you turn the system on it already should be dling it in the background…you can check in in download management to make sure.

Edit: some on gaf notice an upgrade in speed for some of their applications and what not where others don’t see much of an effect.

I think this patch was to fix the freezing issue on consoles (which probably was Nintendo’s #1 Priority). I’m sure improving the responsiveness of the OS is up there too and we’ll likely see an update for that soon.

In your opinion how powerful do you think the WIIU is and do you think it can produce uncharted 3/gears of war 3 level visuals?

Times loading things or going back and forth on the menus seem about the same and honestly that takes way too long. I got the Wii U & 3DS update as well. The 3DS one only took like a split second I was really shocked. Must have been something really minor.

Also if you use the Wii U to get Wii VC/Wii Ware stuff I’ve noticed a few downsides to it. One you can’t link your club nintendo account to it for the coins but you can of course still buy stuff. NES games are forced stretched to widescreen and shit it must be hard coded or something too. Because even using my vizio hdtv remote to try and fix it back to 4:3 and it doesn’t work at all. Yet stuff like Castlevania The Adventure Rebirth is in proper 4:3??? Funny how it says SDHC cards DON’T work with Smash Bros Brawl too and a few others. That makes no sense at all. But it’s not too big of a deal. Also the system memory they let you use for the wii side of stuff won’t last long at all and you’ll probably have to get another SD card for it. Again not a big deal there as most people have tons of SD cards by now anyway. Really wish there was a way to fix that forced streched thing on the nes games. Probably the same way for other vc too. I wonder if using a/v cables or component cables would fix it too?

This needs to be in america NOW.

I think it can do a lower end unreal engine 4 visuals. Unreal already said they’ll be bringing it to wii u

Some Wii U’s seem to be have been affected by the update more than others. I posted the thread on Gaf about it 3 posts up. This patch for the most part seems to be for stability now…which is what Bunkei said.

Looks like Binding of Isacc is going to have a Rebirth on consoles

Nicalis is the one that’s going to be doing the porting and so far the confirmed platforms are Vita and PS3. Nicalis is in talks with MS and Nintendo right now. This is your second chance on this Nintendo. Oooo…Danny B is doing more music and remixes for this…haven’t actually heard any of the original stuff. Might have to look into that.

NoA’s Direct can be watched here when it comes on
http://www.nintendo.com/nintendo-direct/archive/12-05-2012/

and NoE’s Direct will also be here

NoJ’s has already been put up with some Dragon Quest X, Pikmin 3, Lego City Undercover and Game and Wario footage

What the hell is up with Iwata and staring at random stuff at random points in these vids? lol

Translations provided by Cheesemeister on Gaf

Is mario actually good or is it another shitty “look we made a lazily designed 2d game but it has mario so give us your moniez!” game?

Pikmin 3 looks amazing!

That google maps app is kinda cool…kinda curious how footage for the Panorama view is captured.

NoA’s Direct should be up in 2 min

They just announced Kasumi as a free downloadable for NG3: RE.

Mostly the same stuff that was in the japanese direct save for some 3DS stuff. I’m guessing they still aren’t sure if Wonderful 101 will be out Q1 or not I’m betting Bayonetta 2 won’t make it by Q1 either. They didn’t mention anything about Monster Hunter either which was disappointing.

…Enough reason for me to buy. brb. counting pennies…

And yeah, sad nothing new about MH or Bayonetta 2.

Titles like these make Nintendo shine, raw fairytale like imagination.

A game for assholes who get to be assholes. IT’S BLOODSPORT!

Compared to the current generation consoles, the Wii U has way way more potential. We won’t see this for another 6-12 months when we’ll see games built from the ground up on the Wii U. Nintendo make a shrewd move by emphasizing efficiency and ease of use rather than focusing on power alone. The fact that the Wii U has the ability to offload responsibilities to its powerful GPU from the CPU (as well as having DSP to handle audio, gamepad not impacting resources, etc) and having IBM’s proprietary EDRAM (meaning information can be transferred the GPU/CPU at breakneck speeds). Yes, I think it can with ease reproduce graphics even beyond Uncharted 3/Gears of War 3 since neither runs in native 1080p/60 fps on the current consoles.

Make no mistake, the PS4 and Xbox Durango will be more powerful, but they most likely won’t be able to sell it as cheaply as the Wii U. It also remains to be seen if the difference is big enough to justify the extra cost. I also think that the gamepad is a game changer, and will become more noticeable as developers find neat ways to incorporate it into their games.

The biggest praise I’ve seen heaped on the Wii U is not the power of the console, but that it’s very easy to develop for and that Nintendo went through great lengths to minimize bottlenecks developers usually have to contend with when optimizing a game for its unique architecture.

Thanks dude.

I now have a better understanding, that thread that was shitting on the WiiU being slower then current consoles was a confusing mess to get a clear awnser from.

Basically the WiiU perfects the current console generations power in a more practical and accessible fashion, slimming down the current technology to optimize it to maxim efficientcy. I guess it would be like goku when he perfected the SS1 form to fight cell.

I also heard the WiiU can operate a lower end unreal engine 4, which sounds nuts considering how powerful it’s suppose to be. I wonder how big the graphical gap will be between the WiiU and 720/PS4.

Will it be a n64 to dreamcast leap or a PS2 to PS3 leap?

dreamcast to ps2 leap
