The Official Wii U thread V.1.1 - Sun Sets on Wii U, Switch Over In March

It’s no Mario 3, but there are shades of it (and Mario World) in the game design. The world is interconnected like in SMW, and you can skip entire levels to reach the boss of the world. Some levels have alternate paths leading to shortcuts. I wouldn’t go so far to say that it’s the best game since Mario 3 or anything like that, but the game is fun. Definitely better than the previous NSMB games.

ZombiU

I haven’t had this much fun with a zombie game in a long time. Very glad I bought this. Super fun.

Let’s go, gaming industry crash! I want this to happen so every one calms the fuck down and goes back to developing less powerful, but cheaper (for consumers AND producers) consoles.

If only shit was that easy

And quits fucking around with DLC on disk and shit like that.

How is multiplayer on wii u within the os. Can you see what your friends are always playing so you can join in like with xbox and ps. Is it still as dumb as wii was? I hated how online multiplayer worked on the wii

Ok so after doing the setup and long updates/installs I finally got started.

First impressions: The interface seems really cool on the dashboard. We popped in New Super Mario Bros. and the first thing that catches your eye is the picture, its ridiculous. So clear, fresh, smooth, etc. and the colors are just amazing. Literally this game could completely suck donkey balls and I don’t think I would care because the picture is so pleasing to the eye.

The sound that comes out of the gamepad is surprisingly really clean. I also like that you can turn it off and just have the tv sound on.

So far the systems just seems fun.

As for the game itself, it seems like classic old school mario and I love that.

I have some noob questions for you guys who’ve spent some time with the system if you don’t mind helping a guy out.

  1. Can you play with the Wii U gamepad screen turned off? Like if it gets distracting or something.

  2. Let’s say I had a pro controller, can you just use that like you would the xbox360? Or does the Wii U gamepad have to be used initially?

  3. For those that have tried, how does the Netflix compare to it being used on the 360? I normally watch all my movies/shows on Netflix through the 360, is the picture any better or the interface any better on the Wii U?

  4. How do you access the Nintendo store where you can buy classic games?

Thanks for any help. Pretty happy with the purchase so far.

It’s called the Nintendo eShop. There is an icon of an orange shopping bag. Click on that to get to the shop.

I recommend Nano Assault Neo.

Thanks Koatl. I’ve had a few whiskey and diet cokes so I’ll prolly check it out tomorrow so I don’t buy too many games based on nostalgia hehe. I still need to fool around with the dashboard for a while and figure out how to add friends and stuff.

I think if that happens gaming would lose a lot of talented people to other industries and once they’re gone they aren’t coming back. Artists would move to other media formats like film, programmers to different fields in IT like enterprise software or to other tech companies unrelated to games. Designers, producers and writers may start new careers. A lot of devs will probably switch to mobile and social gaming but that market is so saturated as it is now there won’t be any money in it. We may see the end of consoles altogether because no matter how cheap it is to develop for a console it won’t be cheaper than programming on PC. One good thing however is games journalism will disappear alongside an industry crash which means no more shitty sites like kotaku.

I picked up on a whim. Surprised they weren’t hard to find. I only got the white version since I don’t like the smudge magnet black and didn’t care for the extras. Not sure how the lower internal memory difference will work, though

So me and some friends are trying to play Nintendo Land but the game keeps freezing. Anyone else experience this issue? We’re trying to play a 5-player game.

EDIT: Apparently lots of users have the same problem, and a fix is expected in a few days.

I fooled with the dashboard for a while and its a little confusing.

Koatl: I went to the marketplace thing and its all new games. I asked a question in the miiverse about how to access the marketplace for old games and they said to go to the wii channel thing in the middle. So I went there and it asked me to pair my wii remote, but I don’t have one. Do you have to have one in order to buy the classics like Super Metriod, Mario RPG, etc.?

Wii U virtual console is in development still, so you’re stuck with the Wii Versions which requires a Wii mote and a controller.

Thanks jedpossum, so if I get a wii mote and controller I can get the classic games?

Yes, you can play them after you buy them.

Sweet! thanks.

That online community thing is brilliant. Those mods must work overtime deleting dick pics haha

And dayum, you can buy all games as digital. Love that. Can you install your games to an SD card?

Check out Toys r Us, they have Flingsmash on clearance for $24, includes the Wii motion plus controller. Before you do, go to Groupon, they have a $10 for $20 coupon for Toys r Us, in store only. I got Flingsmash for $15.

ZombiU is going to end up as one of those games where a majority of the reviewers have missed the mark on it. I seriously don’t know what they expected from this game. This game IS survival horror. There so many things and thoughts that go through your head that you have to think about. Each encounter that you come across with a Zombie has a chance of ending your life and ammo is scarce. On the flipside of this…if you don’t use your ammo then you don’t get better with weapons so each time you encounter a Zombie or Zombies you have to make a decision. Recently I’ve been seeing stories on Miiverse about people coming across random hoards…shit…I will fucking piss my pants and run like a scared ninny if and when that happens to me because I know all the stuff that I have on me I won’t want to lose. This includes any upgrades in efficiency to your guns or the stuff in your bag. The longer you go without getting killed in this game the more tense and careful you are around your surroundings. Even if your character dies…the progress that you’ve made in the campaign isn’t lost so it’s demoralizing but you always have a chance of getting your stuff back by killing the zombie of your previous character…and getting revenge on the asshole who killed you in the first place because you know he/she is going to be around the area. Also if you have friends playing the game then you can come across their zombified characters and loot them for stuff as well.

I could go on and on about this game…but safe to say is I easily reccomend it if you’re into Survival Horror. My plan is to try to dig in another few hours into it tomorrow…can’t do it tonight since Toonami will be on.

  1. As far as I’m aware…there isn’t a way to play Wii U games with the screen turned off. That would actually be a pretty nice feature to have and I’m sure it could be patched in later. Another reason why I think Nintendo should take Miiverse a step further and include a sort of General Discussion somewhere on it or something like that. They’d easily be able to see suggestions like that without having to scour the internet for it and they’d get it specifically from people who they know own the console.

  2. It’s going to depend upon the game. NintendoLand? Someone is going to have to use the pad. NSMBWU? Pad or Wiimote. Call of Duty or Darksiders? Probably can use just the Wii U Pro controller after starting it up initially. Ironically though I have yet to touch my Wii U pro controller because I can’t put the damn Gamepad down.

  3. I’ve watched Netflix through pretty much every system I own save for my Vita (not even sure if it has it sadly…it’s been sitting at my computer desk kind of lonely… :frowning: ). Netflix on Wii U for me is pretty much on par with the PS3 version which I think is the best version of the app. I decided I wanted to watch a movie on my Wii U in this room so I chose Dororo. It’s crisp, clean and in High Def as it should be. The way how my computer is set up though I have to sort of lean over a bit to look at the TV…but then I realized I had a Wii U now soooo I moved the movie over to the pad. No muss…no fuss. The movie just kept going and it still looked pretty solid on the pad. I even played with it and swapped it back and forth to mess around with it to be sure it could handle it and it did like a champ. I reeeally like this functionality lol. The only thing I can say that the PS3 one has over it so far is the ability to just continue on if you’re watching something like a series. I haven’t tested it out to see if the Wii U version had that or not…was going to test it on Fullmetal Alchemist but got annoyed that Netflix Took down everything but the 3rd season. The ther thing I’m somewhat concerned about is the subtitles and their placement of them. I’m watching Dororo and the subtitles are showing up halfway through the screen and slightly to the left and small font. I hope that’s just Dororo…cause otherwise whoever thought that was a good idea should immediately have the back of their head slapped.

  4. If you’re talking about like the NES, SNES, etc games that you had access too through Wii…you’re going to have to make sure you have a Wii Remote Plus (don’t get a regular wii mote…you won’t be able to use it for your Wii U) first like the others said and then you’re gonna have to go into Wii Mode and access the Shop Channel through there. Wii Mode is a whole separate thing in the Wii U and for right now that’s the only place you’re going to able to have access to those games. Also your Wii U pad and as far as I know right know…the Wii U Pro Controller don’t work in Wii Mode. I haven’t moved my Wii stuff over to my Wii U quite yet ( but I need too soon…need to play more Xenoblade) so I haven’t been able to test everything out involving that quite yet.

Also put up your ID so I can add you and put you in the OP. You can add other people by going into Miiverse, clicking on user menu, and then searching for Users. You can send someone a friend request invite through that method so long as they accept random friend invites.

So it has begun.

Drawing dick pics in Miiverse… the de-facto counterargument to use against anyone who tries to say video games are an art form (David Cage @ Quantic Dream). They aren’t. The last games that come close to being art are games like Grim Fandango or Okami. Everything else just serves as a time waster.
