They’re adding Slopestyle and Ski Half-pipe to the 2014 Olympics
There’s more excitement watching the Winter Olympics now that they’re incorporating more events you’d normally only find at the X Games. Get ready for those backside double rodeo 1080s.
Now it’s the waiting game until 2016 rolls around for Brazil’s turn to host the games. It’s so much fun watching these games. I wish there was a channel showcasing the runners and some of the athletes who participate in pro circuits, leagues and organizations so that they don’t just fall off the face of the earth for the next 4 years. If poker and log-chopping can be shown on ESPN and other channels, the Olympic sports deserve something too. Follow the stars, know their stories better and help grow their sports due to coverage, more exposure and being something more consistent in our lives.
Watching the Olympics never gets old. Great stuff.
If you use online streams or can access Euro sports channels you can continue watching these sports after the Olympics. You could probably also visit their respective governing federation homepages for broadcast information. Every sport has its own Regional and World Championships and I’m sure those are all televised somewhere overseas.
Actually pretty much all the sport governing bodies are headquartered in Europe so I’m pretty sure if you live outside of NA you can watch every Olympic sport outside of the Olympics. The sporting landscape is very different from how it works here where all we tend to focus on are the 4 major pro leagues.
How can people really take men’s water polo seriously? It’s such a “girl” sport to me… maybe that’s because the first time I saw it was when the women were playing… then again they wear those silly looking bonnets just like the women do…just the bonnets and speedos. Wouldn’t you be disappointed if your future son told you that the sport he was interested in playing… was WATER POLO…? Of all the things he could get into— football, basketball, baseball, soccer, boxing, curling etc…water polo? It would be tough to put on a fake smile for that and tell your boy “that’s great!” and start encouraging him and all that jazz. That discussion is some households might even be something like this:
“Dad… I’ve decided o a sport I want to play!” “Ohhh that’s great… what is it?” “Water polo!” "…" "…Dad?"
*"… I… I have no son." – *he abruptly turns and walks out of the room, with a single tear rolling down his face…scene fades to black.
Even if you were to win gold in that… surely you don’t get the good endorsement deals later… I doubt a gold medalist water polo player will be on the Wheaties and Corn Flakes boxes, or even on the latest Subway commercials.
Don’t a majority of Olympians have normal job and lifestyle? I know Home Depot used to advertise that it supported Olympians. A professional water polo player at the olympics probably travels around when the chance for a match occurs and trains whenever with a team but other than that they probably just have a normal life.
Personally, I’m horrible at Water Polo. I played some pick up games of Water Polo and it’s just tiring as hell if it goes on a while and I’m not the best swimmer, even though the game is fun. Playing Water Polo in the shallow end at least there’s a less of a chance of myself drowning, though it’s just team handball with water resistance at that point.
I just wish it was organized and all under one roof. It makes me think of the Tennis Channel. They show classic matches, current matches ESPN/ABC/USA does not cover/will not cover and sometimes has historical documentaries, specials and interviews you won’t get anywhere else. I catch some of the Olympians outside of the World Championships and Olympics. I think a one-stop type of media channel could really boost some of these sports’ popularity and accessibility.
Most athletes don’t have a normal lifestyle, and a lot of them don’t have jobs. It’s their job to just train for the next 4 years. The ones that have jobs pretty much go from job to training and from training to job.
I’m just saying because I have seen more than one article like this. Coincidentally there is a water polo athlete in there. If you’re Tyson Gay or someone of that caliber you probably are set for life in sponsorships already but for the lower key athletes that don’t make big waves, it seems that they often have to just support themselves.
I think the closest thing you’ll find that matches that description is… YouTube You won’t get to see anything live but at least it’s all under one roof. Seriously though we won’t get a channel like that because money rules all and there’d be too much bureaucracy and general human bullshit involved to organize something on that scale.
