It’s only like that because China has a high medal count. USA gets all sad/salty when they only win silver too. Did you see the women’s volleyball game? The tears were flowing when they didn’t get the gold. Other countries are happy to just get a medal.
Actually I think it’s like that because they know they’re in for a beating when they get home (basing myself off the various articles about the mistreatment of chinese athletes by trainers I’ve been reading these past few days).
China has 9 medals from table tennis + badminton.
China has them high-as-fuck expectations from training people since childhood to win gold. You don’t win gold, you let everyone down. Based God hates you.
Great Britain don’t give a fuck. They weren’t expecting to medal in anything other than the rowing and such they were already great in. Unexpected medal is cause for joy.
Now if only Canadians could take the time to stop complaining about how “Winter Olympics are the real olympics” to train a bit, maybe in Rio they’ll step away with more than 1 gold. That’s all I’ve been hearing for 2 weeks, people talking about how they don’t care because it’s not the real olympics. Well, that’s the right attitude to get better!

On a different topic, one thing that always gets me during the olympics is powerful shit like this:
Funny, I always view the summer olympics bigger than the winter olympics. I can see Canada do well in the summer olympics but it will be a long time.
Half the countries complain that Winter Olympics > Summer, the other half complains that winter is all rich, white people sports. Then you have China and USA in the middle coming into both and raking in the medals both times.

Winter Olympics sucks for a few reasons:
#1 Only one actual head to head event (Ice Hockey). Part of the allure of the Olympics is seeing people competing against each other whether it’s running, swimming, volleyball etc.
#2 Less Events
#3 Summer Olympics has shit that people have actually done. Everyone’s ran, or jumped at some time in their life. Many (most?) have at least been in water, Hit a ball with a racket, wrestled, lifted a weight. etc. Who the fuck has ever luged, or curled? Ice skating is a little more common I’d guess, but still not common.
#4 Sometimes I question how much of an even field these people are competing on. It’s statistically impossible for two people to race the exact same course downhill. This can be a big deal when you’re talking about hundredths of a second.
I can think of a few more, but these are the biggest ones that come to mind.
Pretty sure they have multiple skiing/snowboarding races that are head to head. Skiing moguls comes to mind immediately. I think cross country skiing, and that shit where they stop to shoot at targets is also head to head.
Oh really? I thought the moguls was against the clock. Still it just doesn’t sit right with me that two people race against each other in an event like that.
There’s not really much comparison between Winter and Summer olympics. A good 85% of the world don’t even know nor care enough to know when the Winter Olympics are going on. Kinda hard to get people to watch people skiing when said people don’t even know what snow actually looks like
They should make writing your name in the snow an Olympic event.
Snowman contests would be a pretty cool olympic event. For the winter olympics at least
