Tales of the Abyss was a mess in other respects.
Enjoy your 10fps world map, and ridiculous script from Scamo’s most rushed game.
Characters are legit though.

Is there a Tales game that doesn’t suck, then?
Vesperia, Symphonia. I really, really, really want to play the PS3 Vesperia, but that shit is never coming out in english.
It isn’t so much that they suck, they just have major flaws that could have been fixed with more TLC or maybe just more time.
Abyss was rushed to hit an anniversary deadline. Xillia apparently feels incomplete/unbalanced too-- but it is getting a “director’s cut” later on which may or may not fix things. I expect Scamco to port that version a year late too.
Lloyd is a douche.
None of the would be great aspects of Symphonia are free from the taint issued from the nozzle of Lloyd.
Haha, $4 a costume? Scamco, what are you doing?
I like this.
It is like Namco is providing weeaboo intervention, for those in need.
Holy shit they are $4.00. Pascal formal wear is all I need. Fuck’em.
now that i’ve come to the end. i’ve gotten a pretty good grasp of my feelings for this game.
I’d also like to add that the music in this game is disgustingly irrelevant. The port songs are the only melodies that i can remember cause they repeat it in every town you go in a different style.
I mean don’t get me wrong, I still like this game a lot. But it’s Namco being Namco.
Worst story
plot obviously
[details=Spoiler]The theme of the game AT WHAT POINT DO YOU REALIZE THAT YOUR FRIEND IS EVIL?
If some dude you hung out with for one day seven years ago shows up later and has red eyes now and goes batshit crazy and has evil black waves pouring out of his body and is flying around on monsters that breathe darkness, at what point are you going to try to stop that fool instead of acting confused? Even if you don’t kill him, at some point, SOME POINT, they should have at least decided to restrain him.[/details]
Worst dungeons - Worst. Worst, worst, worst, worst, worst. The dungeon mechanics were all terrible-- they did nothing but force you to walk somewhere and hit a button. What was the purpose of the shitty wall where the dungeon was mostly vertical? The shitty beach where you had to use the “jump into the water” mechanic? The shitty floating platform dungeons where you had to walk somewhere to have it automatically transport you? There were two dungeons that were just below average, all the others you’d have to have a serious think-tank session to make them worse.
Horrible AI - If I put the AI on “Attack the guy I’m attacking”, I’m not expecting much from it. It can do some fancy dodging shit, but I’m tired of getting party wiped because of a 2x AI KO and no opportunity to revive because the other AI is trying to make it a 3x. Also, enemy AI is bullshit when you get too many spellcasters enemies that spam up the field with AOE attacks.
Earning new Titles is a grind - The arte usage titles are stupid. Most skills unlock after 200 uses then after 400 uses-- which is fine for the character you are controlling, but for anyone else? Forget about it. The AI uses things with a relatively even spread, so even getting to that first 200 is tough, which means that they’ll be stuck sometimes where the SP is just going into mastery instead of training more skills.
Sub-systems - Clusterfuck.
Why would I want to keep +1ing a weapon when I get a later weapon that is a straight upgrade to it?
Dualizing items blows since you don’t know what things are safe to sell and what things aren’t.
Titles are fucking retarded since you get so many of them to grind for skills that you never really get the chance to sit on one and use its equip bonus.
The eleth maker thing’s percentages are too fucking low to be useful for making even uncommon items.
Using B-strings to A-strings isn’t efficient until really late in the game.
The enemy weakness system is abso-fucking-lutely stupid. Waaaaaaaaaaaay too many different subtypes to keep track of on enemies and moves.
i didnt read your plot analysis cause i’m at the end but i havent finished the game, nor have i played the expansion. but if you have a problem with cliches and lack of character thought and progression, yea i feel you there.
the dungeons are just really fucking terrible. half of the shit didnt need to be done, walk here push button here walk back 1000x. and i never got lost in a dungeon out of how badly it was designed before, which is an interesting accomplishment. the fact that there wre NO FUCKING MAPS didnt help whatsoever.
we’re together on the AI
the titles like i said were fine, if you really cared about what skills you wanted to develop and what titles you wanted to work towards, you just had to adjust their usages. if you don’t care you can just let them sit and you or your teammates will just buff out so long as you make sure it rotates after level 5. but yea the bonus towards mastering a title or using it for its bonus is fucking useless.
the weaknesses and affinities made no sense i agree. i just looked at elements whenever they popped up, and it worked out.
ok well. off to beat the game.
PS like i said this is only my second tales game. is it really that bad compared to others, or is this a recurring issue? i cant believe an incomplete vesperia is so much better than the upgraded version of this game.
PPS: i’d like to add that even though i loved the .hack series, i’ve always consideered it a guilty pleasure for my jrpg tastes. it’s sad to see that franchise continues to look better as more games come out.
Man FUCK I actually want some of these costumes. If scamco wasn’t fucking insane and charged like, $4 for all of them I’d probably bite.

So far I have not heard a single piece of music in graces that I could remember as being memorable and I’m going through the future arc now. What the fuck happened Motoi Sakuraba?
Watching this makes me want to go back and replay symphonia:

Dat music.
the sidequests of this game really piss me off. what’s the point of the item book if it doesn’t tell you where you got them?
Graces is begging for a strategy guide to be made, which surprises me their wasn’t one made brady games or anyone else out there.
4x Sophies in Pirate costumes > *
Not great but more useful than gamefaqs to me.
yea you just have to interpret between translated and actual names and titles but that’s the best guide i’ve seen.
God I love so many things about this game.
…why does it have to have a few really fucking maddening things in it too?
Opinions on Tales of the World RM3?
Soooo, Xillia anyone?
Very entertaining game no doubt.
Story is the worst. I’ve been yelling at the characters to do the same thing for like the past 30 hours. And now they are finally realizing that maybe it might be what they need to do.
OR EVERYONE WILL DIE.
It needs to be Xillia directors cut. Oh wait, I forgot that all the costumes in that one are dlc.
