The Official SRK Unemployment (aka "Extended Vacation") Thread. Too much free time!

How old are most of you guys? I’m 25 and make 60k at Federal Law Enforcement Agency. Its boring as shit and I want to quit, but with the economy sucking ass I figure I should stay put for awhile.

I think most of us are in the mid to older 20s. That’s just my guess from reading a few threads that had people’s ages in it.

i’m pretty lucky i have a job as a fucking cashier at a major electronics store. cashiering sucks as hell but i’m getting my paychecks every week. ain’t complaining for now.

havent been working since jan. sucks ass to bc its so boring at home doing nothing. i been applyin toplaces but no luck. had 1 interview in applebees but they never called back. i live in queens ny right now and seriously need a job i wana move out by the end of this yr. idc if its in a apartment with roomates i just wana get out of my aunts house. i wana have responsiblitys. and the sad part is im talkin tolike 3 girls and i cant even take them out bc im broke. shit sucks sometimes. im tryin to get my g.e.d tho but its harder to get in then i thought, not gona give up tho but damn a nice job would b nice right now. wish someone here in srk nos any1 in ny that can hook me up. bc these days its not about wat u no, its who u no. real talk… i did get a job in a tennis place cleaning shit, but its only for 2 weeks. but hey il have some money. but it does sucks sometime when ur seein everyone around u succeed and working but u. not even gona lie shit gets me sad sometimes… and i think to my self wtf am i doing…

Hmmm. This was very helpful. The most responses I’ve been receiving are sales jobs. I haven’t done any sales in a long, long time (almost 10 years now) but I wasn’t too bad at it, I just wasn’t aggressive enough. At this point though, it wouldn’t hurt to try.

When I worked there they gave me an address and I just walked in. I didn’t have to find my own place. Target sucks anyway. So I approve of the last line

Like I said, working a year at McD’s doesn’t make you look better than someone who wasn’t working for a year when looking for a job. That is… assuming the place you are applying to doesn’t require you to flip burgers. or outside of a high turnover job like retail.

There’s more stuff you can do than lounging around your house while out of work, so I don’t see how being out of work makes you look lazy, unless you were actually being lazy and not doing anything at all. So no, "I was in school "isn’t the only acceptable answer.

Turned 22 in may.

EveryFlowerFlow: Who would pay your bills if you were out of work? It don’t sound like YOU would, too caught up in pride and all of that. Seriously dude you’re my age and have no idea the value of a dollar. What’s your credit score there Mr SoCal?

If you’re not working or in school then what are you doing? Reading Wikipedia doesn’t count. Pulling off shoryukens or throwing fireballs (or whatever they do in World of Warcraft) doesn’t count for college credits. Taking an adult ed class? Good, so is every other high school failure. Nothing matters without credentials.

Do you have a job bro?

yeah I’m in my early to mid 20’s,still lives in moms basement, and a college drop out! :arazz: :shake:

What are you a cop or something?

If it’s not a cop like job I got 1 question…

are you guys hiring?:woot:

I work for Gamestop, which is technically being unemployed.

Second that one.

To nothingxs: LOL.

VSLASH, is that you? :wonder:

Sorry, I LOL’d @ that response.

Good news: I just got called for two interviews for tomorrow. One in Marketing and the other in Insurance. Gotta’ get job soon or the missus is gonna take the Wii back.

If you have experience, you’re not a complete recluse, and you have a product you feel comfortable with, you should be able to do it. Just don’t put yourself in a spot where you don’t have any security.

I need to find a way to get a baseline income of about $400 a week so I can do some of the stuff I really want to do without having to put my entire well-being on it. God knows how I’m going to manage that, though. This stuff is hard. I thought I had close to the perfect opportunity, but that’s looking false right now. Oh, well.

I might be on my way to the unemployment office soon as well. =(.

Hey not to piggy back on your shiz, but wheres the marketing position at? I’m new to AZ (in phoenix area) but applying all over at this point, but things are different here than cali, I find that you have either go directly to the employers website or most times even call them regularly to find openings, makes sense, monster and cb are damn expensive. Just trying to figure out where I should be lookin.

Heh.

Not to be a dick or anything but I’ll be happy to tell you tomorrow after my interview. I recommend going on Jobing.com and check out what they have available. I just moved out here from Cali too last September. If you’re not familiar with the AZ weather, you’re gonna love it.

Oh i know, I just got here a week ago, the 40 degree jump is hell. HELL I say. I dont even bother trying to go out before… 8.

And thats totally fine, I wish you and everyone else here the best of luck in finding that job man.

I’ve been all over the net looking for gigs, theres just not a plethora of them out this way, btw what part of AZ you in?

what the hell you guys moved out to AZ??? the feeze…where in AZ???

im outi

Roberth

You could have at least replied to me directly.

Actually you are partially correct. A large number of positions one doesnt need a college education and the such. Real Estate Appraiser dont need one, your average contractor dont need one, your average mechanic just need certification which wont take long. Matter of fact if one decides to become a certified Microsoft Office Specialist by taking these classes it is very difficult not to get an entry level job with the state nor the federal government.

Any moron can get a degree but what one is going to do with it makes the difference. You know this so why even bother with the college argument? I have one myself but it isnt enough it is all about what skills one has and what experiences one has that is it.

One has to sell himself everyday of his life period. Instead of accepting things the way they are go after what you want and do it. Instead of wasting time pushing carts/flipping burger for your “humble pie” maybe just maybe start placing followup calls/emails to the postions of interests and try to avoid the HR rep and get your ass at the door.
