for people getting/that have a degree/diploma it gives an edge over not having anything at all. (team canadas probably gonna come here and try to gangbang me for arguing that degree>trade school again).

lantis, i was an international relations major, emphasis in peace and security. you could try getting your resume tweaked by your school’s career center…i did it and i went from 0 interviews to a few interviews a month.

maybe old for some but just in case:

FUCK!

I just found out that the dream job I applied for froze all new hirings. it was a Marketing Assistant position with McFarlane Toys. Their headquarters is like two exits down the freeway from me too.

I’m  now.

That must hurt. :shake: I know how frustrating it is not getting the dream job you want…

Yeah cause I REALLY said that McD’s adds to your resume. Please read carefully. I was saying “I’d rather hire the dude who WORKED recently than the dude who DIDN’T work for a period of MONTHS.” I was using McDs and Wal Mart as an example of work, not as an enriching life experience. One of the first questions you’re asked is this “Why were you out of work for (x) months?”, the only answer you can give that will be a good one is “I was/am in school.” (or if you had a legitimate injury) Being out of work makes you look like a lazy fuck.

When not in school I have been out of work for exactly 1 week in my entire fucking life. Different strokes I guess… I’ve heard it’s an EC thing.

Like I said, I wasn’t trying to slam anybody in particular… but I gotta ask, how can you guys be out of work for MONTHS and keep your head above water? Cutting into my savings would hurt me way too much. (in the way that losing money hurts, not that I havent saved much)

Fuck that noise. Employers REALLY don’t think highly of people who resort to working at McDonald’s or Wal-Mart, ESPECIALLY with a degree. They will be like “Uh, you have a degree, WTF WERE YOU DOING AT MICKEY D?”. That displays lack of ambition in their eyes, like the kind that would probably resort to sucking dick if you had to.

Hell, I worked at a fuckin’ COFFEE SHOP waiting tables, but I’m sure as fuck not putting that on my resume. What good is it for me to go to a big company and say “Hey, hire me! I had a nice stint in Starbucks!”?

Like many people said, it’s all about pride and paying dues. Techincally, we are people who are prepared and are supposed to know more than those guys flipping burgers. Why should we resort to begging for scraps? It’s kinda like having Tom Brady playing in the Taiwanese football league. Believe me, I tried “swallowing my pride” once, did one of those small jobs, and every day it was all about questioning myself (like, WTF am I doing here?). Not good for the self-esteem issues.

As for the blank spaces in my laboral periods, I just tend to “extend” my stays a few months for space-covering purposes. Sure, it sorta would be like “lying”, but very few companies actually make background checks anyway. And sometimes when they do, your old employers can’t even tell how long you were there anyway (unless you did something really major), so yeah…

I’d rather work at McDonalds and have gas in my car than to be unemployed and walk everywhere, or even worse than walking in 100 degree weather while wearing black, catch the fucking streetcar.

I’m gonna hang back and agree with Grits’N’Gravy on this one and say some of you are too proud, because experienced hard workers are becoming expendable nowadays and everything is becoming expensive for no reason.

If yon don’t have a job then you better get your ass one and If you already have one then thats not enough get two. Like I said experienced hard workers are VERY expendable now.

I’d rather be tough enough to work through a rough patch and not lie on my resume tyvm. Ah well, I have a good job regardless. I just hope that a portion of my check isn’t helping any of you via welfare or any of that garbage.

Thanks bob, somebody who seems to understand integrity. 5 percent unemployment rate isn’t insurmountable.

I agree with this. When I was able to work a few months ago, I got a cart pushing job at a home improvement place. Seeing my mom’s facial expression when I told her what I would be doing for 7 bucks an hour, she looked like she was going to start bursting into tears. And my dad was no better having this blank stare like “what the fuck man…” But it didn’t hit me at all, not until I realized the second day out in the middle of the parking lot with a row of carts to manually push what it seems like half a football field, that I can not do this. Just looking at myself at the moment, 24yr old military veteran with college option pushing shopping carts along with 15yr old highschool kids. Unless you are starting from nowhere then it’s understandable, but if you already have a “road” chosen and have had a history on the road, why make a u turn and go farther back then where you last stopped? It is more then just pride.

Does even one of those small fry jobs net you enough money to pay bills, anyway? I highly doubt it. If you live by yourself and resort to working at Mickey D’s or whatever, good luck covering up all the bills gathering on your ass. Or more like…it COULD be enough to pay your bills and groceries…but not much in the way of anything else. So you basically would only be working to make ends meet, and nothing more. What’s the whole point in that?

Fortunately, I know how save and prioritize what my money goes on. I can tell you from experience that Mickey D’s pays more than the unemployment check you get every week.

Like I said: If you don’t have a job then you better get off your ass and get one and if you got one already then thats not enough get two.

I’m not saying to aim low or anything but sometimes you HAVE to do shit you don’t want to do at all in order to get the job done.

Ok so I had a job interview last Friday at this restaurant(shithole?),everything went great(or so I thought)

The manager tells me to call him Monday and he would pencil me in the schedule for a “test run” to see if he wants to hire me full time. So I call Monday and he said sorry the other restaurant what was supposed to open this week was delayed and he won’t be able to put in on the schedule until it’s open since he overstaffed.

and my mom is trying to kick me out and I have no money for an apartment!

So Lantis how you making bills meet w/out a job? I am just curious.

My mother covers it up. Not the way I wanted for it, obviously, but it helps. Besides, my bills don’t amount to much, so it’s not like I’m TOO much of a burden.

I quit my job/career of 12 years last month. It’s still bliss. Time will tell if that is ignorance talking or not. Good luck everyone.

International Business and Trade? Try this company:

http://www.ges.com/

I know a couple peeps working at GES… starting pay 19 / hour + overtime

Or

www.experient-inc.com

LV, Deerfield, Fredrick MD, and Boston locations.

^ working for these guys, about same wage as GES, different roles.

Especially good time since there is a crap load of shows in the next couple months… example:CES, SEMA, Magic,

Be prepared to go over the 40+ hour work week and a mess load of frequent flyer miles…

Its better than working at McD’s unless you are a manager.

Actual that is incorrect and completely wrong. It is all based on how much one makes the prior 18 months after taxes. So if you made at least 14K after taxes they would get the full benefits amount and at times it is about 780-850 every 2 weeks. Unless McD pays about 10 bux an hour (they dont) you are incorrect.

I can understand where you are coming from and I did. It was the biggest mistake in my life. It was a waste of time and skills doesnt improve. My year was wasted doing crap odd jobs like that. That is the mentality of a slave and my family arent slaves any more. So I deciced to get licensed in RE (best decision in my life) and quit retail forever after 2 months of gas money and living with my folks (i couldnt take it any longer). After getting licensed, I purposely didnt add the retail nor the call center gigs on my resume. I explained all of my interviewers my situation and what I was doing. They have seen my work from my prior employers (excluding retail & call center) and also i demostrated my skills in excel, access, html and typing skills of 60 WPM. Once each company seen this I received 4 offers inspite of no work for 8 months after quit the shitty gigs. Im enjoying life everyday as a RE agent. I made sales and im good. I dont think pushing carts at walmart is going to improve your skills in excel or access nor improve your typing speed. Stupid!

Yep and so far i will be getting 3 interviews with the state of MD and 1 with HUD

I had my final interview with a irrigation company last week and everything went really well. They said that they would give me a call by the end of last week to let me know one way or another (it came down to me and 2 other people). I didn’t get a call on Friday so I was worried and I kind of had the suspicion that I didn’t get the job. On Monday, I received a generic letter telling me that I didn’t get the job.

I was really disappointed because it was an analyst job that I wanted and I thought I would really excel at. It started with a panel interview followed by a research project of “on-the-job” questions and analysis that I would be required to do. On top of all that, I had to go back in for another interview.

They put me through all that and I still didn’t get the job.

I’m going on 7 months of unemployment now!

I believe everyone is a bit right on both sides of the argument.

If you’ve been unemployed for so long and your money is running dry then you should get A job ASAP. The thing though is to look for another, better job to hightail in the mean time.

Myself I’ve been working at BK for 1 1/2 year so far trying to get a job that doesn’t involve fast food or manual labor at a ridiculously low wage. I fucked up in that I’ve stayed so long at my current job and now I don’t know what to tell employers when it comes to this. I’m looking to get into a job with the city but I don’t know where to start since I’ve yet to finish my degree or have any actual “experience”.

I’m not trying to hate on you or anything. I’m just saying maybe if the situation were different you might reconsider a shitty job for a while. Some of us aren’t that lucky. Whatever you’re doing in life you’re still a wrestling thread brother. =)

Reply to the Real Estate Agent guy Akuma whatever: I’m pretty sure that w/o college the only job that a person can be really successful at is sales, those of us who are very good at sales are rather rare. (manual labor pays well but isn’t a permanent solution imo) It’s what I do and what you do. I never said you’d get an epiphany microwaving some chicken fingers, but you can learn patience, humility and other things like that which you don’t learn in school. (look at how fucking disrespectful these little shits are these days.) I’m glad you’re successful, but remember that not everybody has sales skill… and you need some SERIOUS selling to get you through an interview when you haven’t worked for 1/4 or more of a year. The vast majority who can’t speak effectively enough or are too nervous are fucked. You yourself said you had to explain your situation… takes finesse doesn’t it?

Ah I been off of work for like 7 months on disability. So I just stay home with my son and take on the roll of house wife for teh time being. I also do that university of phoenix for schooling. I gotta get some kinda degree. I mean I made good money where I worked but when I do go back to work its going to be doing something I want. I dont want a job just to have a job anymore. I want to do what I want to do.
