What I’m saying is you don’t just want to shoot anyone who comes into your house because it might be a mistake. You just want to stop them and defend yourself, you don’t necessarily want to kill every motherfucker who steps on your property. A pistol is fine, but you are looking for the intimidation factor from the sound of the pump so that you never have to fire it in the first place. It’s for home and self defense, not for taking the offensive if someone comes into your home.
If the guy is going to rush you or something, aim center mass and drop him. If you pump that shotgun and he gets the fuck out without any of your shit, even better.

That’s why I don’t buy into the 9mm myth. For military applications, there are definitely better pistol / round combinations than a Beretta / 9MM. But everyday purposes, a 9mm will do just fine.
You’re in Florida, I believe that the Castle Doctrine is in effect there. In that state, if someone forces themselves into your home (i.e. burglary or home invasion), you can shoot them without liability and without having to retreat.

Do yourself a favor and educate yourself on city, county, state and national gun laws as well as past case laws. They will be very beneficial to you if you end up in a situation where you are forced to use your gun.

My pops went on a TDY to Elmendorf for about a year in 1994 and I accompanied him. About three weeks in there was a tragedy in which a Good Ol’ Boy from Florida got Fatal K.O’ed by a bear, a situation that could have been prevented if he had thought to study/research the wild life. The guy went moose hunting with a few friends, killed one, went to get his skinning accessories from the truck, returned and there’s the bear. He attempted to shout and scream at it to spook it. However, this was a Kodiak, and it responded to the threats by rushing him down. The hunter replied with six shots from his .45 Magnum (four of which hit) and the bear STILL wounded him enough to kill him.
The tale passed around by word-of-mouth and people thought it was a bullshit story, but then the report came back. The two missing bullets lodged in a tree, a guy that later defended against the same bear (found with the four rounds in it). This spooked almost every hunter in the area (professionals and novices alike, my father included) into replacing whatever side arm they had at the time with a .50 AE Desert Eagle.
I want to argue that “Well, if you’re hunting in an area where there’s supposed bear activity, a D.E. might just be appropriate!”…but really? It’s ONE to maybe THREE extra shots more than a .45 Colt Magnum depending on which one you get, and it’s not likely for you to even get the chance to rattle all shots off considering the kick back and the fact that you SHOULD BE RUNNING 
I AM curious as to if one has the power to put a Kodiak (or any bear) down though.
I just looked up some numbers… looks like .50AE is putting out about 1200 ft/lbs. at the muzzle on average. Max load would be ~ 1600 ft/lbs - which would be about like an SKS. The average .44 Mag load energy is about half of the .50AE (a little less actually)
Black bears are not that hard to put down, from what I hear. Brown bears are tougher. Grizzlies (and polars) tougher still.
A Kodiak is a class of animal that would be considered “dangerous game”, up there with a rhino, hippo or large lion. Quite a distinction between Kodiak and just “brown”.
Most feel that .44 Mag will give you decent odds against black/brown bears.
I would not take on a Kodiak with an SKS… which is actually a long gun you can easily control at that power level. I figure your odds with a .50AE handgun are even less.

I don’t know, but I ain’t fucking with bears and when purchasing a handgun, I can definitely say it never crosses my mind “would this gun be great for home defense AND taking down a fucking kodiak?”
A well aimed shot from a high powered hunting rifle should take down a bear… but what the fuck are you doing trying to take out a bear?

Dude… you can’t outrun bears. They’re not as slow as it seems. If a bear is coming at you and all you have is a handgun… hopefully your friends are great shots, or save one bullet.
Your best bet if you have a pistol is wait to the bear gets close and get about 5 or 6 direct headshots in and inflict some brain and vision damage…ive only heard of people like king david in the TORAH fighting bears and lions in hand to hand combat and coming out victorious…rocking a desert eagle sems smart as a back up weapon while hunting…dont know what folks would do if they ran up on a uber agile KODIAK MARMISET though:rofl:
quick question for you guys though…whats your opinion on “BEAR MACE”? …is it that effective?..will it really drop any living creature in agony until the chemical wears off?..my daughter walks home from the school bus everyday and i want to get her some “BEAR MACE”…shes 10 years old…any suggestions?..
i don’t think you should give your daughter mace, if only bcuz she’s more likely to accidently mace herself than an attacker. not to mention i’m not even sure minors are allowed to carry that sorta thing to school anyway.

Avoid bears as much as possible. If you kill a bear (and you’re caught) you’re going to be in deep shit.
The clowns at the New York Legislature have introduced bills that would Ban the .50 caliber rifle, make gun shows illegal in public property and make it mandatory for each bullet sold to have a unique serial number.
Because this is really going to deter criminals.
