Ratchet and Clank are the best animal-esque mascots out right now.
Little kids don’t even respect Sonic. And most older fans have turned their back on him. He’s a joke nowadays. If I could talk to him I’d say, “How’s life? Is this how you thought it’d turn out? To star in garbage and be packaged on mediocre merchandise and food items we’ve never heard of? You’re living from crap game to crap game man. You gotta get it together before it’s too late. Remember what we were. REMEMBER WHAT WE WERE…”
The old level designer from the 16-bit era of Sonic’s history, Hirokazu Yasuhara, as well as a number of people from “Sega Technical Institute” (they gave us Sonic 2) ARE at Naughty Dog, or at least, I believe Yasuhara still is.
In another time, and place, I could imagine them still being with the series for at least a lil while longer. It was just that Naka, with his diva-like ways, systematically forced out good people, who were largely responsible for Sonic being as good as he was back in the day. Yasuhara and Naoto Oshima (director of Sonic CD, my fave game, he now heads Artoon) are both examples of prime talent that was lost in this way, over the years…
Who knows if current-day Sonic Team will ever produce a “traditional” Sonic game that meets my fancy, but I COULD definitely go for another “Sonic the Fighters” by AM2, that does more to continue where the classic game left off.
How about it, Sega-AM2? Wii will never get a Virtua Fighter, and it doesn’t have to. But such a game could stand to sell quite well on that platform. I mean, most Sonic fans will probably anything it looks like, they might as well get a game that stands to be solid, and adds to Wii’s growing FG line-up… :wgrin:
I would love to see a VF 1-4/megamix/kids/sonic the fighters compilation on the wii. a new Sonic the fighters with the VF5 engine running on the same hardware would look…really weird.
no I don’t think S & K is the hardest Sonic game. I neever really though about which game in the series was hardest for me since I treat them somewhat in the same vein as Mario games. If I was to give a nomination for hardest sonic game (console wise) I’d probably say Sonic 1…and I’m talking about OG Sonic 1 from the first printed copies. Reason I say that is because of the bullshit of getting comboed on spikes. You’d land on one spike and heaven forbid if you land on it a second time regardless of whether you’re flashing. Act 3 boss of Labyrinth Zone was hardcore pressure. You didn’t have to defeat Robotnik but timing for dodging the spikes and staying above the water was crucial. I don’t know if anyone would agree with me though.
I dunno about that. Sonic 2 Gamegear has some pretty solid hitboxes/detection and it was still ridiculously hard. It was mainly that they make you do boss fights with no rings, so there is ZERO room for error.
And Sonic 2 GG shows that Eggman just likes to see Sonic suffer. I mean, he saves Sonic from falling into a lava pit only to dump him into that hellish boss fight with the robo-antlion.
I rmemeber playin that shit on x-mas morning way back when and swore up and down that Labrynth Zone act 3 was impossible. It’s still hard as fuck and that shit was almost 20 years ago.
I just got a used ps3 and played the sonic that it came with…holy hell I’m glad I haven’t paid attention to the lil hedghog in years, i had NO idea wtf was on my tv… But that sure as hell couldn’t have been sonic.
Thing is, the REAL thing that made the GG Sonic’s “hard”, was the viewing space. Most of these games (sans Triple Trouble and G Sonic/Sonic Blast) were actually constructed on the Master System (Sega’s 8 bit console), and then were ported over, with smaller resolution, onto the GG.
Play 8-bit Sonic 2 the way it was “meant to be played” (on the Master System), and it’s quite easier. Antlion Boss? The entirety of the third Green Hills Zone Act 3? Final fight with Eggman? MUCH more manageable on MS. And it has mostly to do with the notion that you can actually FUGGIN’ SEE WHERE YOU’RE GOING!
For the sake of example:
This is the Antlion fight on the MS version of the game.
The same fight on the GG version.
See how much of a difference there is?
So yeah, I’ll definitely second the notion that GG Sonic 2 is probably the hardest game in the Sonic series. But it’s really due more to technical limitations than anything else…
…Was it 2006 or Unleashed? I almost wanna say you probably were playing 2006 since with Unleashed you at least get to go through 2 day time stages before dealing with the werehog.
The GG Sonics aren’t very good games. But if you want a challenging Sonic game without regard for its design, you could do worse (i.e., you could pick any of the 3D ones and be worse off).
