The Official Sonic the Hedgehog thread

Sonic XG isn’t finished as far as I’m concerned. I like the concept of a fan continuation of S3&K, though it’s a little overkill since this is a resurrection of the Death Egg for the…third time in a row?

I mean,
Sonic 3: It’s launched, Sonic blasts it out of the sky. It crash lands in Mushroom Hill.
Sonic & Knuckles: Sonic destroys it utterly.
Sonic XG: ???

I shouldn’t really nitpick though, the game looks top notch.

I just looked up that Sonic XG. Looks pretty fun.

From IGN article you posted Sonichuman

SSX was an original IP when Shenmu was released so what the fuck? We should step over a really fun arcade style snowboarding game (The type of games that article points out as being the fantastic types of games we should be playing) for a an extremely polarizing, slow, story driven game?

I mean I understand where they are coming from and they where on the right track with comments about Mirrors Edge. The last scentence just kind of killed any point they where trying to make because SSX is a very SEGA kind of game.

They probably should have used a different game instead of SSX but still I understood the point they were trying to get at and it made sense to me. It’s going to harder than ever for original IP’s to get accepted now because of the recession unless the games has a lot of hype and advertising going for it and even then it’s iffy. And take note that even though you may have found Shenmue to be a polarizing slow driven game doesn’t mean that everyone felt the same way. Shenmue had a lot of fans and I watched someone play through the second game the whole way through…I liked a lot of the concepts it had despite the hilarious voice acting.

Main guy: Do you know who killed my father?
random passerby: O.o? uh…no?
Main guy: Do you know the 4 wude?
random passerby:…listen…I gotta take a massive dump. I can’t sit here and listen to your babble all day. ya feel me?

By Polarizing i meant the overall world view of the game. A lot of people do indeed like Shenmu but a lot of people really didn’t like it. It failed for a lot more reasons then “It was on the Dreamcast” because it was ported to Xbox as well where it also failed. The whole article stinks because Sega has been producing a lot of new content for a while (Maybe not inhouse but it’s still their money) as well as recently with Mad World and Bayonetta later in the year.

Frankly the article shouldn’t be “Sega failed” It should be “Gamers failed for not giving good games a try because there isn’t a II behind the title name”

Where Sega fucked up has a lot less to do with the kinds of games they make (Cause fucking up just Sonic is not enough to bring them down they have more titles then that, that ARE fantastic) and mroe to do with a lot of business decisions tracking back long before the DC.

I dunno the article feels as relevant as the “How to fix Sonic” article as well as a bit of a “Fuck you PS2 for putting out just as good original IPs.” I mean shortly after SSX came out we got to play Devil May Cry. Fuck there was nothing on the DC like DMC. I mean the closest is Berserk?

Then they don’t even bother touch on how easy it is to pirate games onto GD-Roms and how god damn fast DCs fuckin die. It’s as bad as the red ring of death in some cases.

P.S. cause I don’t want to be a total whiny bitch that Sonic GX thing is pretty sweet.

Death Egg was the biggest one thing that he’s ever created…makes me wonder if he’ll ever do something like that ever again instead of just another carrier or fleet.

I suppose it would be a bit overkill but I’m pretty much ok with the idea considering the fact that since it’s a fan game it’s already went into ‘What If?’ territory in my head.

You’re not being whiney…don’t sweat it. Discussing stuff without completely refuting the person and immediately calling said person a blithering idiot is good convo for me…unless said person is indeed a bafoon.

In any case I took away that part from your post because I think that’s where you’re missing a bit of communication. That basically IS what that article is about. They’re not talking about the failures of Sega in particular with the Dreamcast. They’re talking about Gamers failing them. Sega had probably had no clue that GD roms could be ripped so easily and that probably cost them big time in the end. And people wonder why Nintendo is so set in their ways to make sure that they give pirates hell lol.

Here’s a new trailer for S & BK

S & BK Trailer:

wouldn’t it be funny of the Black Knight happened to be Silver?

I like the pig blocking and they ricochet off the sword

I forgot…in this month’s issue of Game Informer I found reader’s letter and the magazine’s response to be slightly entertaining…

I knew Sonic fans were giving reviewers hell but lol…

Actually the IGN article on the Dreamcast is predated by this-

So basically it’s both parties faults…though you can’t really blame gamers after the last 2 generations. Interesting…thanks for that Tizoc.

HOLY FUCKIN SHIT…O.O

SEGA…WHAT HAPPENED!? lmao

IGN Sonic & the Black Knight review:

A 3.9 from MATT!? jesus fuckin christ! Sega sega sega…ahhh man…lemme read this full review lol.

Edit:

ok basically the gist of the review is the game looks great and stuff but again the gameplay ends up killing it. They had already complained before about using waggle for the sword swings all day but apparently that concern went completely ignored. Matt negged this game pretty hard on that and apparently the game is even slower. IIRC the score makes this game technically inferior to 2006 X.X. God damn Sega lol. Well…at least you still have Madworld…:(. Good thing I kept my hopes relatively down this time…I’m contemplating moving my reserve to something else or picking up and playing it and giving my impressions but in all honesty…I’m afraid lol.

Edit 2:
I didn’t even think they were going to have the full character powers as well but Shadow even does chaos control and stuff…Sega…this is a fuckin shame…

Yeah, I saw that too. WTF SEGA? I’m done with getting hype for Sonic games. SEGA PR is just too good.

Hope the same thing doesn’t happen to Madworld. I got it fully paid off and everything.

I decided I’m gonna go ahead and nab it…I think I’m the only person at my store who’s reserved this game so them getting my money for it isn’t going to be a big deal…I’ll post up impressions of the game when I can so if it’s completely as horrible as Matt says then you’ll hear it directly from at least one Sonic fan as well.

Something that’s pretty funny about that review is that I was fully expecting them to rag on Crush 40 but they only talked about cheesy dialog. I’m guessing the game had bigger flaws to worry about that negging them on the music was a moot point lol.

Edit:

I just realized that since I’m probably the only one that reserved it at my store that manes that Sega’s probably losing a big chunk of fanbase this time for fuckin up…

Edit2:

man…Gamespot I know is gonna rip this game a new one lol

haha wow sonic games are starting to get ridiculous with the gimmicks.

but you can always count on a sonic game to have some good music, that’s for sure.

That makes me sad. Thanks to Unleashed actually being IMO good, I kinda had my hopes up for this one. OH well. I’m still gonna play it. Whenever Wal-mart finally gets around to having it in stock in the first place.

Another bad Sonic game?

WHAT A SHOCK.

Next, you’ll tell me the newest Zelda is a rehash of past 3D Zeldas and has no voice-acting.

I expected as much as soon as I saw they used Secret Rings as their base. :\

Ok I’m starting to play the game now…nicely animated opening scene…and I just got through playing the beginning mission…In an hour from now I’ll phone in a verdict.

Edit:

one thing I will say is you don’t just straight up grab sonic by his arm in mid run…Merlina should of had her face dragging in the ground for doing that lol

Edit 2:

I don’t see how the people we saw playing this game earlier were having such a hard time with the first king arthur fight…that shit was easy as hell…and so was that dragon.

Edit 3:

When you visit Tail’s workshop they play his theme from SA 1 and 2 with a slow violin…and it isn’t till you really have to start fighting knights that around the second map that I can somewhat see what Matt was getting at…but NP was right that as of right now alot of time you can just hop over them for right now.

Edit 4:

I was getting used to the game a bit and then I hit the Sir Gawain fight…ah jeez…if it was at any time you’d definitely realize the controls aren’t as tight as they should be it’s in this fight I believe…

Ok so basically my verdict on this game is…it’s definitely not worth 49.99. The sword idea isn’t actually a bad one after playing through a good portion of this game but the mechanics of the normal mechanics of the game are fucked up. I’ve noticed a few times when I’ve wanted to do a quick sword swipe and it didn’t recognize my gesture so I had to compensate for it.

Camera…Secret Rings camera didn’t bother me as much but it wasn’t needed and It shouldn’t have been included. I will say however that Sonic back flip from Secret Rings actually covers a lot more ground in this game and WILL save your ass. I’ve gotten surrounded by knights and quickly did a back flip to re assess everything and homing attacked my way back in but the problem still remains that Sonic won’t turn around and neither will the camera.

Story…nothing much really there in terms of story besides Sonic getting summoned and then having to fend off the evil knights and save the villagers…pretty standard stuff. The banter between Sonic and Caliburn (the sword) can be slight entertaining at times and there’s also a sub plot of when Sonic defeats Arthur he may end up getting sucked into the power of the scabbard (…uh huh…). NP did say that there was some kind of twist in the story however…maybe that’s what it is? I haven’t gotten that far yet.

Also I say the sword idea wasn’t really a bad one because of the Soul Surge which is actually pretty fun to do IMO and getting the perfect slashes in that mode and laying waste to everybody in slo mo. This game is also pretty easy so far besides getting tripped up by the game not recognizing your sword swipes (which coincidentally hasn’t happened to me yet when I entered Soul Surge mode).

I remember someone’s gripe about Sonic starting off too fast in Unleashed? lol…you won’t have to worry about that so much in this game if you bump into something because Sonic accelerates pretty slow starting off unless he’s going down a hill. This can easily be remedied though by doing a quick sword swipe or doing a quick hop like in secret rings.

Music…I’m enjoying but nothing has really come out and snagged my attention quite yet besides the theme of the game and and the first stages music which is basically the violin version of the theme that you’ve heard in the trailers. They reused each character’s themes from SA and SA 2 when you fight them. Shadow has his from SA2 and Knuckles from SA ( I haven’t gotten to Blaze yet…). None of the stages so far have any vocals going on in the back ground but Jun’s guitar is usually somewhere in everything and nothing has really gotten on my nerves yet.

To sum up…don’t buy this game…not like you really needed me to hear that but I’m more than upset with sega right now since I can see that this game has some charm to it especially if you’re a sonic fan but it seems that there were things going on that easily could have been fixed…like the normal sword gameplay. If you’re really curious though…A rental isn’t a bad idea since it won’t give Sega money for the game this time around. And if you’re a big sonic fan and you wanna buy this…wait on it until the game drops 20-30 bucks or you can find a used copy so you can take it back within the week if you’re not diggin it.

one thing I noticed that they fixed which I’m amazed it took this far to do was fixing the grind rail switching. You just tap left or right to switch rails in this game…what took them so long to figure out that this was the best way?
