The Official Sonic the Hedgehog thread

I don’t know about Sonic Rush but in SU it would work better if getting Tension/Boost wasn’t so damn easy. It’s not too hard to stay at full boost all the time…least with what little time I’ve had with it. I could be wrong as fuck about later levels.

Everyone should pay close attention to that. We as gamers want the best from the franchise. Let’s not keep settling.

Spin-dashing is for boss battles and getting going when you are out of tension or during those closed off battles where boosting can get you shot real quick.

Tricks build the tension meter which can be followed with the R button tricks that send you flying in a direction so you can quickly and safely get to the next area. It also serves as an attack.

Boosting is for reaching your top speed and rushing through enemies.

The fun of Rush is unlocked once you realize you have to link all of this together to safely and quickly move through stages.

Yeah in rush you get boost by actually ya know, doing something. You have to pull off mid-air tricks after hitting springs and ramps and destroying enemies. Rings are only there for protection (as they should be). There is also an item to boost your tension gauge but you’ll burn through that in no time.

PS. Ok why does the platforming in Unleashed (Day stages) feels so different from every previous 2D game? Like why is Sonic so heavy when it comes to jumping?

(oh and that ice stage is bullshit. fuck that bobsledding shit)

With opinions and ratings being so subjective, the ‘best’ of the franchise changes too. I’m settling for my personal best and favorites.

Sonic does seem to jump really heavy in this game huh? It’s really hard to guage and he always seems to fall short. It’s weird.

Flux, you never boosted through that one stage in Rush where there are spikes and enemies everywhere on the starting rails and it looks like everything is exploding as you rush forward destroying everything have you?

I mean that’s when I knew for sure the game was the shit.

This is another speed run on apotos act 3 by the guy who also did the empire city shortcut posted earlier by me. Don’t even blink, it will be over soon. This is actually one of the trickier stages that gave me some problems, yet this guy makes it look like nothing.

Hahaha Oh Jesus. It took me a minute to figure out just what the hell was going on lol.

This guy makes me doubt my abilities as a gamer. His videos are amazing.

Damn videos make me want to push through Unleashed to do shit like that. DAMN HIM. puts the game in

I think that in Rush Adventure, that big Sky Babylon stage, and yes its probably the best any of these handheld Sonics have ever been(although the boss fights suck ass and I can do without the water bits).

I think Rush Adventure had pretty good boss fights overall. The giant pendulum thing in the mechanical area was great.

Full Unleashed soundtrack, this one is fully tagged and actually has Empire City. Enjoy!

Yo, I was at work the other day listening to the SA2 soundtrack(one of the best vid game OSTs ever imo) and it got me to reminiscing about when Sega was on it and they didn’t have to pimp the blue guy because he stood on his own two and got his own cake. Anyway, listening to various tracks(Rouge’s, Knuckles’, Eggmans’ ftw) had me thinking about the characters that I think aren’t in Unleashed, but are in Sonic '06.

Now, I haven’t played Sonic '06 and been avoiding it like I do DMC2. But I wanted to play it eventually, like before I play Unleashed. I know it might not have any relevance to Unleashed storyline wise or whatever, but I like to play the previous games of a series before the latest ones. And Sonic '06 is pretty cheap nowadays so I was wondering who all actually thinks it is an extremely bad game rather than just a mediocre Sonic game? I’m not a nitpickity person and I can oftentimes see and enjoy shit for what it truly is. So if Sonic '06 has a nice story, great music, and good boss battles, then I’d be interested in playing it, if it is actually playable. Now if all this is shitty is fuck as well, then let me know, straight up, before I get it and turn it on.

Sonic Adventure AND Ps360 version of unleashed have a Tornado stage…not in the same vein as Sonic 2 but it’s still there…

Also your comment on spin dashing I’m going to address because I don’t know if it’s been really noticable or not but Spin dashing and spinning along the ground seems to have started losing it’s usefulness right around SA. To explain exactly what I mean…3k and the games before it actually used sonic’s spin to both keep his momentum AND also solved the problem of going to fast and running into enemies, especially in Sonic 1 where Sonic wasn’t really running quite that fast yet on his feet and in order to really get him moving you needed to roll down some type of hill or at the end of a loop. In the more recent 2d offerings though the spin doesn’t keep sonic’s momentum the way it used too…ESPECIALLY in rush. Spin Dash doesn’t keep sonic’s momentum either…including loops. Best Example I can provide is Pyramid Cave from SA2 right close to the end before the big leap to reach the goal. You try spin dashing through the loops and sonic MIGHT make it…as opposed to him running through it and always making it. I did use spin dash when I needed a quick boost to get sonic to his max speed (spin dash cancel the roll into a run, repeat) but I’ve barely if ever had to use the spin dash to get up an incline because of the way the levels were designed. Not saying that boosting has completely replaced the spin dash but this is something that has to be kept in mind.

WTF!? lmao! wooow…when I did that stage…it took me some tries to get through…but this guy…

Hot shit! Now I can play the ‘You fail’ music whenever I feel like it! I should put that on my phone to play during stupid moments.

Edit:

opinions on 06’s story are going to vary…I enjoyed it myself, what I played and what I just watched on youtube. I liked how all the weavings of all 3’s story came together and fit including all the time travel plus it’s the first time that 4 major characters within a game got killed at some point…one of them being Sonic ( I’m including Eggman and Elise…cause they did technically die until Sonic went back and fixed that, then Blaze…). For all intents and purposes though Sonic 2006 doesn’t exist storyline wise…period. It never happened because of what Sonic and Elise did at the end…so thankfully…You don’t have to play or even acknoledge the game at all since nothing that happened in that game will show up later…well it shouldn’t anyway.

06’s music is AWESOME. In fact IMO that’s the best thing that came out of the damn game. Especially like the song the sounds like someone’s saying ‘PATTY MELT PATTY MELT’ in the background and the Crisis City tracks.

Gameplay…god…if you could just watch someone else get frustrated with the game. You know what? Matter of fact why don’t you just watch the game being played? The whole story is posted on youtube and there are vids of the stages lol. Just do yourself a favor…Play at your own risk.

Sonic '06 actually does have some interesting gameplay concepts in it. In particular the idea behind Silver’s moveset had a lot of potential. The problem is that it’s super glitchy. Way glitchier than any of the other 3D Sonic games. Couple that with the fact that it has massive amounts of slowdown at times, and the load times are terrible and frequent (like you usually have 4 separate loading screens per level; even worse it takes 2 different loading screens just to start a sub-quest) and the game gets rather frustrating to play very quickly. It’s really a shame too because if they had just cleaned up all those damned glitches it actually would’ve been pretty fun.

IMO the story was atrocious. For starters most of the game runs on the idea of predeterminate history, but then the ending suddenly pulls a switcheroo and does a history re-write. They also give Blaze a completely different origin story and background from her original DS appearances, which irritated the crap out of me as well. But the biggest thing that bugged me with the story is there are tons of just super cheesy moments where characters act out-of-character or just random things happen with no good explanation just because it’s what they needed to have happen at that moment.

Honestly, SEGA would do best to keep the story at basics. Establish character motivations and send them off through a series of levels and bosses, like in Heroes. There is no need to even try and tell serious stories with these characters, but it should especially be avoided when your writers are obviously mentally deficient and keep churning out the same story with a fresh coat of paint every time, but it’s always fucking stupid. The planet splits into pieces? Seriously, what the hell is that?

Now the music is fairly good. It’s not my favorite soundtrack of the series, but I have found myself humming some of the tunes from time to time.

I don’t remember any stage like that O_o. It has been a long time since I picked up Rush. And remember, I only played the first one.

The spin dash cancel infinite was one of the most useful things in Adventure IMO. You could cut a stage in half with that broken thing.

/agree

It’s one of the Altitude Limit levels, but I don’t remember whether it is Act 1 or 2. But yeah, if you don’t Boost you are left trying to jump between sections of spikes on rails and it’s very difficult. Or you can just Boost, and it’s awesome.

Sonichuman: That sounds painfully honest in the kindest way possible. Thanks lol. Actually I don’t have online at home anymore(on from phone), but I watched quite a few cutscenes a year or so back. Wish I would’ve watched more gameplay segments because I don’t remember how it looks lol. Well, at least you gave the music props.

Remy Saotome: Lol thanks for brutally honest. I actually expected quite a bit of cheese and stupidity. Hell, DMC series has moments when I cringe at too much absurdity or a sudden unfitting change in a characters personality. I agree with you about Sega going back to the basics. I mean, you can give the characters more depth than in Sonic1-S&K, etc, but don’t take it too far. Some of the games have alotta shit that noone cares about or isn’t even neccessary. Like, they went through the effort and time to explain this or that and put it in when it actually turned out not to be relevant in the least. Why the hell won’t they just take a page out of Adventure series’ notebook and run with it??? I actually thought they were pushing it with the whole Shadow lifeform destroyer/protector of earth thing but I didn’t complain because the game was fun and good. But yea, I get where you’re coming from.

Well, so far I’ve heard the music is good. But I still don’t know. I’d like to see what they’ve done with the characters(I read up on it but I wanna see it), gameplay, etc. firsthand. Umm, I might just hold on this for a few. I wasn’t gonna get another ps3 game until SFIV but if I get bored of T5DR and GGXXAC then I might just pick up Sonic '06 if I find it extremely cheap. Shit should be $9 at a side store or something lol.

AHHH FUCK…how the hell did I forget about that bullshit. I played the game at least that far in and I was like…wait…WHAT!? That shit fucked with my head for at least a good few moments as I tried to piece where exactly this game took place lol. I can’t even remember if Blaze and Sonic even got a chance to get a glimpse at each other but I remember Silver mentioning something about him and she was just going ‘…? who dat?’ Could also say that thanks to Solaris and his broken ass time bending shit he probably revived Blaze and put her in her current position or something…GAH! ‘Time Travel is stupid’

Speaking of Silver…the last few comics from the Sonic series have actually been quite interesting…Everyone is brawling then Silver just shows up out of nowhere. Scourge actually makes a comment about how stupid looking Silver’s hair is and now everyone’s facing Super Scourge. Everybody is going to catch a beat down…including Shadow lol.

figured I’d drop off this remix in this thread on my way to the video game music thread…

Sonic & Knuckles 'Sand in my Shoe’

done by none other thank Jose the Bronx Rican…I have it on loop right now it’s pretty tight IMO
