I was sorta making a reference to it when I said ‘doing a good job of it would be a better question…’
Tails’ Adventure was a fairly entertaining Metroid-style game, and compared to most anything else available on Game Gear it was pretty darned good. However, yeah it still wasn’t really great either, and meanwhile Knuckles got a starring role in a 32-bit game.
Even though story-wise they have matured Tails some and allowed him to sorta do his own things, AFAIK him and Sonic are still best friends. He’s still the primary sidekick character. He deserves second billing over Knuckles or Shadow or whoever else they tend to give that spot to instead. I don’t really understand why either as last I heard, their popularity polls showed it as going:
Sonic > Shadow > Tails > Espio > Knuckles
So I finished Unleashed a few days ago and I have to say I thoroughly have enjoyed the game from start to finish. There were a few times when I really wanted to keep playing day stages instead of night, so I would spend my time having fun in the day stages. The next time I picked up the game I would be more ready for a night stage and I would continue progressing through the story.
The replay value of this game (to me) is pretty high since I have tons of fun trying to S rank stages in this game. Funny enough the first (and only so far) stage I have S ranked is Empire City which happens to be my favorite stage in the whole game. I don’t really see why reviewers are slamming this game with such low scores when it has a lot to offer. Sure it can be abit frustrating to collect sun/moon medals to progress the games but it’s not that time consuming.
Another thing I liked is how the game progressed difficulty wise. It started off pretty simple and straghtforward. Eventually it became hard to the point where it reminded me of oldschool sonic/mario games. The last few levels in particular were quite unforgiving at times.
Holoska night is the 1st level that gave me hell. I kind of like holoska night. It’s a pretty fun werehog stage that keeps you moving due to the falling ice ledges and icicles. One wrong move and you are screwed. Timing is very crucial and you have to learn how to press the button which makes the werehog’s arm stretch a lot which will save you ass at times. I really enjoyed the challenge.
Shamar day is also a challenging stage with lots of evil traps which forces you to master the timing of sonic’s wall jumps.
Adabat day is a BEAUTIFUL stage that is also very unforgiving. I like the design of that stage a lot. Cool looking sea and water effects, and sega’s trademark clear blue sky with awesome looking clouds are in there in full effect, same with apotos.
Overall, a very cool game. I enjoyed it despite some frame rate issues here and there. The PS3 version is way more harder the the ps2 version which I also own.
Edit:
I just replayed sonic 2006 just for kicks and that game resembles the sonic adventure series a lot except the horrendous load times. It would have been a nice game had they eliminated the long load times and glitches.
On the PS3 version, did anyone else think that Adabat’s levels are kinda easy compared to Shamar and Empire City’s levels? I didn’t even have to revisit Night Act 1, I got S and all the medals on my first playthrough.
Looking at Eggmanland now, which I’ve heard is hellaciously difficult.
Dumehra: I agree with you on 2006. It’s really the awful, awful load times and massive number of glitches/slowdown that kill 2006. The basic level design and gameplay mechanics really aren’t so bad. Well, the story is pretty terrible too, but so is Unleashed’s story; that wouldn’t have stopped me from playing it. To this day though, 2006 is the only Sonic game I haven’t 100% completed. I even have all the gold medals and achievements in Secret Rings, all S ranks in both Rushes, hell I even finished Super-Hard in Shadow. But I can’t stand playing 2006 because of the load times and glitchiness.
Nah Adabat Day is easy too. The only thing that really seems that hard to me is the second water-running part. Shamar Day kicked my ass at points though.
I haven’t been keeping up with gaming news: how exactly does SU play? I remember in the teasers that Sonic stages were side-scrolling w/ 3D graphics. That’s tight, but is that still true?
How are those Werehog stages?
and of course, is it worth playing? not going to bother reading “professional” reviews, what a fucking sham of journalism
The daytime stages are divided into three different types of gameplay:
- the so-called 2.5D side-scrolling, with 3D rendered graphics but 2D gameplay
- free-roaming 3D sections similar to Sonic Adventure
- behind-the-back camera semi-on-rails sections
The levels transitions between each of those types periodically throughout a single level. There are also occasionally large yellow jump-ramps or special blue springs which send you into a QTE that will earn you a shortcut or item if you do it right.
The nightime stages are something like a cartoon-y version of God of War’s combat mixed with Ristar-style platforming.
I wanna play empire city’s level so bad…it just looks like a lot of fun.
Thx man
so aparently these Sonic Adventure sections with NPCs and such aren’t in the Wii and PS2 versions right? (just reading the last couple pages) I might have to get the PS2 version
Yeah, the WiiS2 version removes the explorable hub worlds in favor of menus. There are still free-roaming sections in the levels, but they are very, very rare in the WiiS2 version (though more common in the PS360 version).
Well they are there, but they are easier to get to than next gen. Due to disc size (I guess) when you enter a town, you’re shown to a hub that allows you to talk to people from different areas of the town without having to walk around and find people. Altho this may get tiring at first, its way much better than running around trying to find people.
Edit: Remy said it. Remy said it. Remy said it.
So on WiiS2 its kinda like what you have to do in the first Sonic Rush? Gotcha.
Gay.
Just got the Wii version. Should have read up more.
So Eggmanland was a pretty long and difficult level. Looking forward to trying to S rank it. Where is the hot dog stand with its Missions though? There is no hub world for the area.
EDIT: Read an article about Sonic & the Black Knight. I was right, Arthur is the Black Knight. Exactly as I was complaining about earlier, Tails gets shafted too. The other main characters are members of the Knights of the Round Table. Tails is just a random town blacksmith. Merlin’s apparently a woman in their version of the story, named Merlina :wtf:. The sword will also have it’s own persona within the game, and its name is Calibur.
Oh it could use some good fine tuning on how Sonic controls (He’s very stiff) and just an over all level of simple polish. Those snow levels are a mess and the speed stages are a pain in the ass for all the wrong reasons.
Yeah the Wii version has a boost limiter.
Is it like this because of hardware limitations on the Wii or something?
Either way, the boost limiter looks super annoying
Not really sure. I had fun playing the Wii version, but the PS3 version is definitely a lot better even with how annoying the hub worlds and fetch quests are.
you have to beat the game first and then go back to eggman land for the missions
Ah I see. Thank you Shadow.
EDIT: Wow. S ranking Eggmanland was a trial and a half. I’m kinda scared to see what the actual Hot Dog Stand Missions are for that level now.
